One thing of note that I believe has been left out of these posts. The fresh fish purchased at many merchants is usable for the 225 range Fishbone darts,
the tool..
# Jun 25 2003 at 9:28 AM Rating: Excellent
Do you lose the fishbone dart tool upon combine, or does it recycle?

Dart tool is always returned, succeed or fail (only exception is if you're trying to make the fletching trophy, then it's always CONSUMED, succeed or fail).

Why would a monk master fletching?

And this is the answer why, hehe. Closest a monk can get to archery. These are awesome in PoN (assumnigh you're pulling non-summoners) because unlike shurikens, you can actually hit things outside of their agro range.
Of Course

ratio for throwing weapons is irrelevant, it's the huge range these have that makes them desireable, so in answer to your question, yes. they are for pulling.
RE: Of Course
# Dec 06 2002 at 2:29 PM Rating: Excellent
Not just huge range that makes them desirable... Although that is the primary factor. You get your skill high enough you want a very low dmg weapon. If you do too much dmg pulling in the higher game you are the one that will be pulled (summoned). Learned that the hard way when someone swiped agro off a giant in Kael when they "didn't notice him chasing me". They let me regain agro, but I did too much dmg doing so and I was summoned twice on the way back to camp. It died I lived, but that was definitey painful....

the dmg ratio suxx on this so i presume this is for pulling? am i right?

I'm planning on making these with my monk, the only hard part is finding the roots (human), but i have a druid that constantly complains about having too many root-men voodoo dolls in her inventory, so i'll just have to relieve her of them :) These are the best throwing item i've ever seen with such huge range, Monks for years have been buying those javelins that weight 2wt and have 200 range, no longer... these are wonderful for anyone with the skill to make them, and these 225 range ones can be made with regular fresh fish, they just weild 25 less range than the ones made from named fish. each combine of a bones and the whittling tool yeilds 5 of these darts, so imagine you only need 4 fish bones and a whittling tool to make a stack of these when they are trivial.

I don't understand what you need the roots for... the recipe calls for fishbones and a fishbone dart tool. Is there a part that calls for foraged roots that I missed?

The Fishbones are made in a tacklebox (fishing skill) by combining a fish, roots, a fileting knife and celandine (alchemy supply). Trivial is around 170 fishing skill, depending on the type of fish. At a bit over 5p/attempt for the bones (ie, 1p/dart with 0 failures), these are not praticularly cheap to make, so I limit making them to on-request for my guild monk.

Pulling
# Oct 08 2002 at 7:20 AM Rating: Excellent
I agree! These are great for use in pulling. The range of 225 make it excellent for that. The damage is kinda sucky, but then again, unless you are bow kiting (an exercise in patience LOTS of SOWS and futility) it is worthwile. When you pull using missile weapons you usually only get a couple of hits in before the mob hits back. So doing massive damage while pulling with a missile weapon is rare. It is amazing range for a thrown weapon. My ranger gets the occasional good hit in with a bow. So if you are looking for doing massive damage when pulling with a range attack play a wizzie.
Even Better...

whittled fishbone darts - high quality fish bones, fishbone dart tool - throwing: 3/20, wt 0.1, range 250, size small, rec level 1; WAR, PAL, RNG, SHD, MNK, BRD, ROG, BST; ALL, trivial 182, yield 5

Only problem is in order to get the fishbones or HQ fishbones you have to catch zone specific fish then prepare them with a fillet knife, foraged roots, and celandine (Alchemy bought).

Nice thing is not only do you get the bones, but you also get some prepared fish which you can eat. I assume you need a tackle box for this too. Since my cleric is fishing, might as well make these for my rogue...

Regular fishbones can be made with ordinary, fresh fish, that you can catch in almost any zone that has water. You can also get fishbones from: cave guppy(Mines of Nurga)
clockwork koi(Akanon)
crystallized cave fish(Crystal Caverns)
danak grouper(Overthere)
despair chub(Swamp of No Hope)
dragon bay snapper(Cobalt Scar)
frosty cave trout(Kael Drakkal)
gunthak mackeral(Ocean of Tears)
highland pike(Highhold Pass)
hound pike(Blackburrow)
kerran catfish(Kerra Isle)
krup guppy(Swamp of No Hope)
koada cichlid(Felwithe)
pine cichlid(Surefall Glade)
rygorrian toothfish(Eastern Wastes)
rujarkian chub(Innothule Swamp)
thulian mudskipper(Innothule Swamp)
timorous tuna(Timorous Deep)

Regular fishbones can be made with regular fish. I've been fishing for HQ fish in Karnors (hooray for FD fishing), but I've been making the regular fish into regular bones.

Indeed, even better toys but I've not made any yet since the only currently known fish to give HQ fish bones come from Western Wastes, Sleepers's Tomb and KC. Seeing as how I'm normally fishing in CS (Cobalt Cod for tailoring of course), I'll stick to the regular darts for now.

KC is by far easiest place to get fish for hq fishbones, hehe. Safest of the three zones by far (even if you don't FD, can easily find a corner to fish in that's realtively safe). Also is most accesible: Can't even get into Sleepers without a key, Western Wastes is nowhere near a port (closest is CS, then have to go thru Sirens Grotto), but KC is very close to the FV book if you have PoP. And if you don't have PoP still only a little walk from the DL spires/druid circle.

Edit: Actually checked on this, there is fact 6 zones you can get fish for hq fish bones:

Karnor's Castle (wulf fish), Cobalt Scar(cobalt cod), Sirens' Grotto(grotto bluegill), Tower of Frozen Shadow(grotto bluegill), Western Wastes(red rougy), and Sleeper's Tomb(weary wrass). But still KC is by far the most convenient place to get hq fishbones.

Actually, you can get HQ fish bones from 10lb+ fetid bass in Firiona Vie, and that's pretty darn safe. course... most monks seem to be iksar, so take care about where in FV you fish, if you're a monk looking for these.
#REDACTED, Posted: Jun 09 2005 at 6:19 PM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) you can get 10lb+ fetid bass from Cabilis too if u are iksar and dont have to leave the comfort of ur home city hehe... Dont have to worry bout agro either...
