# Apr 11 2006 at 10:13 AM Rating: Default
this shield sucks for the time and effort you put in. if you spend 30 mins on a icewell mm, you can get alot better shield. and its used by alot more clases including casters and people who don't deserve a shield.

No one gets this item as a shield. Folks get it as a BACK slot AC item. Please consider reading the item description before you make an ignorant post like this.

This was a fantastic shield when Luclin was first released.

Of course it is not as good as an item from Prophecy of Ro monster missions. Comparing three year + old items with the newest expansion is kind of silly, don't you think?

i'm not really comparing, i'm just saying that a pally considering to do this quest, could save alot of time, and just wait till 65 to get full stats on the por shield.

It's still the best AC for a back slot until potime shield.
For a tank, that's all that matters. Don't get it for the shield slot.

Valdanov's ashes
# Oct 19 2005 at 12:24 PM Rating: Excellent
For all those that are buying ashes in the bazaar.

The ashes' codes have been changed.

I have personally verified (through buying a fake set) that the FAKE code starts with 007C07.

To check which one you are looking at, type in ;t<ashes link> without the < >. This will return a string of numbers. If they start with 007C07 they are the fake ashes.

I can see this being usefull for a cleric or pally but as a shadowknight i will not attempt this quest. nice ac and 75 hp is nice but the wisdom os a waste for sk =/
RE: Cleric/Pally
# Oct 10 2005 at 2:16 PM Rating: Decent
As a shadowknight, you won't need maxed out int to do well at high levels. I have maxed out int at level 70 (305) just from concentrating on ac/hp, and I hardly go below 80m (and I keep aggro better than most anybody else... wizards can go full dps before the mob even gets to camp and it'll never bounce off of me.) Anyways, what you need is not mana, but ac/hp. That will determine your value as a tank, and how well you can tank certain things. The 50ac on this shield is incredible for the back slot, even for today (and this is 7 expansions old now). Sure, it only has 75hp, so it's a bit lacking there, but most back items don't have much more than 15ac... that 35 raw ac translates into roughly 59-60ac (35 * 1.7) on your final ac count. That's nothing to sneeze at...

Quick Faction
# Dec 28 2004 at 5:20 PM Rating: Decent
I had to raise my Vah Shir's factions in Katta quite a bit to do the Mask of Espionage quest. I found that the fastest way to do it is to go to Marus Seru and kill the guards at the zonelines to Sanctus Seru and Netherbrian Lair. This does ruin your faction with Seru but is an easy way to up you faction in Katta.
Completing the Quest While KOS
# Sep 09 2004 at 12:05 PM Rating: Excellent
i just completed this quest for my DE Shadow Knight who is about as KoS as you can be in all of Katta. The time it takes to raise this faction is quite significant and as it turns out not necessary. There are posts about an illusion helping out. This seems to help out Rallos Zek SK's but much of the hatred a DE SK is going to get here is tied to Innoruuk and illusions don't change that.

you need to have a character with good alignment MQ the bulk of the quest for you. By this I mean , said good character , does the initial turn in's to spawn kerzar. does the turn in to release the shade, does the turn in of the figurine to spawn the shade fight and turns in the robes for the medallion. this character should now have the badge of service which will identify as "3rd badge of service" , the token gotten after turning in the robes and the scroll gotten when you first turned in the summoning figurine to ajeaa.

the last step with the good aligned character is to turn the scroll from ajeaa into phenic who then asks for your badge or service , the token and the ashes of valdanov zevfeer.

here's how to do the turn in, first i'd suggest you have 4 people here are their roles:

1. Pacifier - must be able to than pacify on lvl 60 mobs and can't be KoS in Katta

2. MQ'er - the toon you've used to run the quest to this point

3. Invisser - toon that will cast invis on the SK. You could used your pacifier to do this too but since you'll need to be doing several things in a short time i recommend a separate person for this.

4. SK - who will receive the end reward of the loyalist shield.

1. Get your 4 folks into the room with Phenic using invis on your SK. position your SK a good distance behind Phenic, he has a reasonable Aggro Range.

2. Have your pacifier set up a hotkey for "all 3 pacified" or something similar. it's important to use hotkeys here because you need to do a set of things in fairly rapid sucession. Have them then pacify all 3 mobs in the room.

3. Drop invis run forward to phenic and try and get a trade window open using something OTHER than your ashes - bone chip , bat wing , whatever. When you have this trade window up, cancel it and hit feign. You are now in position to do the actual trade in. Make a hotkey that says "rdy for invis". Now take the ashes and get them on your cursor. Also make sure you have a hotkey to stand up when the time is right.

4. Have you invisser target the sk and have his invis spell rdy. Open up a trade window with your MQ'r and place the badge of service and the token in it. DO NOT turn in the items yet.

5. Have your pacifier repacify all 3 mobs and hit their hotkey. Here is where you want to be quick. Once the paci message is seen , the MQ'r should turn in their two items. while they are doing this you need to stand with your sk and get the ashes in the trade window. then call for your invis. once invis lands you are indifferent, hit the trade button and congrats, you've got your shield.

now honestly i'm not sure how important it is to do this quickly i imagine phenic would accept the 3rd item for quite a while after receiving the first two. that said the more quickly you do this the less chance you have of getting attacked while trying to do the turn in which would definately mess things up.

i did this turn in while running 3 of the characters myself - the MQ'r , the SK and the invisser. this was good because i only needed to coordinate with the pacifier. if you have the ability to have one person run a few of the folks involved it's a good idea to do so. just make sure you explain everything to everyone involved very carefully and tell them to ask questions until they understand the correct order of things. you may even want to do a dry run turning in junk to make sure you're ready.

camping valdanov is a serious PITA so you don't want to have to do that again. doing things this way will save you days of faction work so it's worth it to take 10 minutes to make sure everyone knows how the MQ goes.

a few other notes on other parts of the quest:

the only thing i had to harmony to get the shade from the chest by himself was the two guards immediately next to it. i got no adds.

when doing this do not zone the character who did the turn in. i did this the first time thinking i had a train and he despawned.

you can use a kos tank during the shade lord fight. however the summoners see invis. if you're doing this for an sk , just feign, otherwise you'll need to keep your tank invis outside the magus building until the shades spawn and the casters despawn, then you can run him in. even then you'll want to keep him in the middle of the podium as there are guards near by.

the shade lord will always initially attack whoever turned in the summoning idol regardless of positioning, be rdy for that.

valdanov is magic slowable easily after a malo / malos. he is also easy to cripple. your best friend in this fight is a bard. they can boost your magic resist up to near 500 at which point valdanov is a punching bag.

any class that has good fire and or cold nukes - druid / wizzie / mage will speed things up immensely.

fight valdanov on the balcony so he doesn't gate. if you have high MR and slow and cripple on him. his dps is no more than your average trash mob in a tier 2 pop zone, maybe even not that high.

good luck.

Clarification On Difference Between the Ashes
# Sep 09 2004 at 11:26 AM Rating: Decent
just to clear up what one poster said below. only the valdanov ashes show a stackable "1" in the lower right hand corner when in your inventory.

what's confusing is how to tell this in the bazaar. you cannot tell by right clicking the item from a bazaar search. you cannot tell by looking at the list of a vendor's items that comes up when you right click on them. in this mode both sets of ashes will appear with a "1" in the lower right hand corner.

however if you select the ashes on the vendor so that they respond with "it will be 40000 platinum for vampyre volatis ashes, etc." the item will pop up in the single window below the inventory list. at this point in this window only the correct valdanov ashes will have the number one. the heratius ashes will show it above in the inventory but not below.

As far as I know, this is still BACK SECONDARY in-game. Perhaps you added an augmentation to the item that didn't list SECONDARY as an available slot , which would alter the displayed equippable slots for the duration of the augmentation.

The Ashes
# Apr 27 2004 at 9:42 AM Rating: Decent
I was lucky enough to be online when my guild was camping Valdanov. We stayed and eventually got 2 ashes, one for the other Paladin starting the camp, and one for me.

I did an identify on the ashes just to check using that mask that casts it (silvery war mask?).

When its been identified, the Valdanov ashes will then become stackable with a (1) on them. The Heratius ashes will not.

They will still both say "Vampire Volatilis Ashes" however after the identify.

SO, the point of all this, is to have someone who is selling the ashes in the bazaar to have them identified BEFORE an exchange.

In this way, if he is offering you an ashes without the (1) and being stackable, you know he is trying to cheat you.

Good Luck, hope that helps on those who are lucky enough to find them in the bazaar.

Duoed all but Valdanov Zevfeer with a 55 Pal and 53 Cleric doing it twice so each has the quest items. Haven't been able to get Vald to spawn yet. Kerzer was somewhat difficult but with the cleric casting Epitaph of Life and nuking as well as healing it was doable. The single shade was very easy the first time, my Cleric was able to practically solo him. But the second time he was fear kited by the shade and died, need some decent MR gear to duo this at low 50's. The secret with the Autark and the 3 other shades is to be in one of the side rooms during the summoning. You can then take out each of the shades one at a time.

Old post but this info should help other people looking =)

Killing vampyres will NOT raise the required faction. Yes, it does raise some factions in Katta, but not the Concilium Universus faction which is the main one, if you screwed this faction up the only way to raise it is by killing in Seru ex: kill Lord Seru or other high guards in the town which summon.

If you are non-kos to this faction there are many ways available to raise it, such as the grimling pick quest

Shade Fight
# Jun 19 2003 at 1:05 PM Rating: Decent
Did the Shade fight twice on the 17th of June. Had 19 people there. Only one person died, because he was an DE necro and was killed by the Wizard NPC's of all people. Both fights, 2 Shade Lords Spawned. He cannot be mezzed, but the other shades can. With a 62 Warrior as Main Tank, and a 62 Paladin as MA, killing the Shade lords took about 2 minutes each, and the shades, around 15 seconds. So now, me a 43 Paladin, and the 62 Paladin need to kill Valdanov Zevfeer. I'll post how the fight goes.
RE: Shade Fight
# Jun 29 2003 at 5:22 PM Rating: Excellent
Jeeeeze!!! 19 People!!!!

Ok heres what happened to me. Had met a very friendly Druid and Shaman that helped me with the kitty. After that I said I might see em later and they offered to help me futher down in the quest.

The first shade was just stupid. At 59, all the gaurds until the house were Green, in the house Light Blue, and the Private Gaurds in the room were Dark. I was facing the hidden wall to make a quick escape so I could get a head start... Daaaa da dadada da da!!! BOOM I'm off... open the door, round the corner.... look back... wait.... wait..... start back tracking. I had gone fast enough to spawn the shade and get outa there. The shade was sitting on top of the Chest... just sitting there, and the Gaurds were indiff. WHACK! Shade comes running, none assist, single pulled, Yeah I rock!

The second Set of Shades was a different story. The 48 Druid logged on her 65 Mage (woooot!!) to help me out because I said it might be kinda hard.

I don't know what I did wrong, but something bad happened. 2 Sets of Conjurers Spawned, and 2 Sets of shades! we Had 8, count em 8 Shades out at one time, and for a while we had 6 with 2 of them being Lords! The Shammy Died after slowing the lords (thank god) but as the battle went on more and more spawned. Used my LoH, and my health just dropped more and more. My Heals couldn't keep up. Somehow that mage managed to kill both of the lords really quick, I think her pet was on one of them, and then there were 6 shades out, thats 3 more then there is ever supposed to be at once, and It was me at 20M and 20HP.

By some stroke of Luclin, my agro had been firmly pressed into the shades, maybe because they were undead, maybe because I was the Quester, either the case, I kited them around the room while she picked them off one by one!

6 Robes droped, and 2 Lord Robes, too bad they can't be MQed without having to do everything anyways. Needless to say, I ended the battle at 19HP, 2M. The mage's pet saved the day and that was WAY to close to being an unhappy ending, nevertheless, that was the most fun I have had in a long time!!

Anyways the point of the story, 49 Shammy, 59 Pally, and 65 Mage took out this section of the quest at twice as many MOBS at one time, this part doesn't need 19 people, but better safe the sorry.

I did it
# Jun 14 2003 at 12:26 AM Rating: Decent
My experience with it was it was a very easy quest, save the last fight. I duo'd with a 60 cleric all but the shades. During the process of killing the shades I went ld. I had my druid on luckily and looted all but one of the robes. (only have 7 min to do it). So I looted the last one and mq'd it to myself. My chanter does all my tradeskilling and not knowing the statue was ND I made it with her. So now I was stuck with 1 item on one character and the rest on my pally. Well I did the turn in, killed the shades, loged on pally, went ld. and ended up looting 1 out of the 4 robes. Well the letter (transcript to give to phelic was on my chanter) no matter. If you have the badge (needed the second one) the ashes and the coin. Hand in and yas get it.

Carefull with VZ. I had 3 groups averaging lvl 54 going after him. We had him down to 3% and he gated. He was full hp within seconds. So called some reinforcements. Had 4 groups. and only 4 melee. 55 pally 62 war 59 war 54 rogue. And owned him. my ashes droped I was happy and now I have my pretty sheild.
Not too hard a quest
# Jun 07 2003 at 2:17 PM Rating: Decent
Currently I am doing this Quest on the TM server with my 41 Paladin and It hasnt been too bad soo far. First fight had a 62 Paladin, a 61 Monk, and 56 Cleric, a 45 Warrior, a 55 Enchanter, and me. We so owned the Vampire fort, and beat Kerzar Clawtore Senseless in about a minute. Second fight, had a 46 Druid, a 51 Druid, same 55 Enchanter, a 61 Wizzy, who was afk, 56 Cleric, and myself. We Killed the Guards, I was Tank (which was kinda Funny) for 2 spawn cycles. (They respawn Fast) I wnet in, gave the key to the box, and ran out with two guards on me. Enchanter Mezzed the guards, and we splatted the shade inside. Total time of all the fights was about 15 mins (including the two guard cycles). making the Figurine took about 3 minutes, with my massive 36 Pottery skill. (not losing it on a failure was nice, took about 12 tries) So far its been fairly easy. Next fight is 4 mobs, 48-52 range, all undead, slowable, mezzable. So I am not expecting any problems. Im buying as many Blessed Wooden Stakes and Phosphorous Torches for my guild for the Valdanov Zefeer Fight. But I suspect from my monkly friend who has already done this fight, that the clerics, and necros will have a field day with all the Anti-Undead spells that will rip into him. I will be the only person in Dogs Of War with this Shield. 62 paladin friend is doing it too, but he still has bad faction from killing guards and Killing Nathyn Illuminous. Im soo going to put this as my back slot. Though I will take a screenshot of me holding it, just so more people can see exactly what it looks like. (I know I suer as heck want to know.)
locked chest
# May 31 2003 at 8:25 AM Rating: Decent
While camping Nathyn, some friends and I got bored, so we decided to kill the chest. Well, it wont die, but, it will move. It took myself (59 pally) and an epic rog (thx Grape) to move it behind the bank perhaps 25 mins.

2 days later im at the part where the locked chest turn in takes place, and lo and behold, the chest is still behind the bank. Guards didnt aggro anyone, was too easy.

Now, just gotta find Valdanov /sigh

Here is my follow up to this quest.
1. The Val Shir in TM will park himself in front of the vamp castle if you can not find him
2. I was indifferent to Nathyn when I visited him
4. The Shade in the box is Lt Blue to lvl 61 he died in 30 seconds with good group.
3. The Magus building is to the left of Phenics Bldg. To get to Firetree go in the Magus Bldg and click on the tapestry between the two guards, this will port you upstairs. I forget if it was two or three clicks to get to his floor.
4. The idol is ND and I did it with pottery skill of 148. It took almost two stacks of clay but it can be done.
5 Tonight something odd happened. After the Lord was summoned two of them spawned. after the script played out we wound up with two Shade lords and 4 Shades. Well we killed them easily with an epic'd 65 BL/ epic'd Ranger/epic'd 61 druid, myself 61 Warrior and a 54 druid. Looted the lord robe and three shade robes.
6. Clicked on the tapestry to go up two floors two find the named NPC. turned in robes then off to Pheonic we went.
7. Turned in the Valdanov Ashes/ the Medallion and the Katta badge. But at this point the quest seems to be broken. Phenic accepted the ashes and medallion but returned the Katta badge. He says he does not need the badge, but aksed for the same one that he returned. I have petitioned to GM and awaiting results.
Overall this is a very easy quest for the reward if they fix it

The reason he returned your badge is because you skipped a part of the quest. You are suppose to give Clawtore the badge before you beat him down.I found this out the hard way also but got to thinking and reread the walk through and low and behold (A Palm to my Forehead)so be careful and follow the quest word for word.

Wrong Drop Table

Guild was lucky enough to kill 2 HG/VZ's tonight within a time of 50 minutes. However, on the second kill HG didnt drop any ashes, and when VZ was killed, he dropped HG ashes (when identified). The Second VZ killing was easier and also to be noted that my paladin stuns were landing on the second one and not the first that did drop the right ashes. This needs to be fixed because its an obvious bug to have the PHs ashes dropped by the boss mob. Its an easy bug to pick up on, but when you go for your turn in and dont realize it.. your screwed and likely only be able to talk with a next to worthless guide for in 5 hours and 2-3weeks time to get the correct replacement ashes *if* admin gm gets nice. Needless to say, our situation is still pending admin GM review.

Long Spawn on Kerzar

Just a little tip for those of you doing this quest. I'm currently working on this on the Rathe, and got a group together to take down Kerzar Clawtore. I handed the orders in to Legionnaire Fallion, and proceeded to have the 2 druids with me track the zone for Kerzar. We did this for about 15-20 minutes, and he didn't pop. I was convinced the quest was yet another broken one. One of the druids left, and the rest of us went to the vamp castle to do some hunting, and, probably about 30-45 minutes AFTER I handed in the orders to Legionnairre Fallion, who comes strolling up and stops right outside the castle but Kerzar! I can't express how happy I was after thinking the quest was broken. Anyway, a 52 Pally (me), a 53 Druid and 2 low 50's necros had no problems at all with him. Don't try fear kiting as the snare didn't seem to stick and he runs FAST. Since the necros couldn't get into Katta (KoS), I had to wait to do the next battle - I'll try to keep you all updated as it goes. The 4 coterie generals were a pain (Our druid was down to 181 HP after they swarmed him), but we all had SoE on and just got out of their agro range.

Um, a 56 cleric and 60gar had no trouble killing Kerzar. He spawns a little late near TM zone. He does not hit anywhere near hard, is snareable, rootable and does not summon. He can be feared as well. He is soloable. We zoned the 4 coterie generals.

Ok, just finished the next battle - the imprisoned Shade. Had a 59 Druid, a 49 Monk and a 52 Ranger with me for the fight. Also had a 44 Druid (thanks Rostic) be the bait to clear the guards out of the room with the chest. The fight only got tough when the Guards stopped chasing the Druid and returned to the room where we were fighting the Imprisoned Shade. As for the Shade, he casts a lot, but if you have good resists it's no biggie. Seemed to have a lot of HP, but the 4 of us took him out fairly easily. It also helps if you can have someone clear the 2 guards and 2 wolves from the front of the house. Now to work on my pottery!

/sigh. The pottery was easy - I spent a couple of hours getting it up to 50, but I don't think I even needed to do that. If you have a zero, just take the sketch, clay and water and keep trying till you get it. The firing was trivial even at 50 pottery, so I suspect that's a no fail act. The shade lord battle was pretty easy too. It takes place in the very middle of that Mage building. If you keep your group in the middle of that area, you won't get the 3 shades who pop to even add. Unfortunately, it was after this that I screwed up. I had read on Paladins of Norrath that the Vampire Volatilis Ashes were tradeable, and sure enough - they were for sale in the bazaar. So, after getting the medallion from the mages, I took everything back to Phenic to turn in. He ate the 2 symbols I had spent all week working on, but returned the ashes. :( Apparently, Heriatus drops ashes of the same name, and I didn't think to identify. Oh well - back to square one. In any case, hopefully this will help anyone else who might try to take the easy way out - if you see the ashes in the bazaar, ask to identify before you buy them.

Bah too bad you didnt read more.

It has been said to Identify them.

I had someone selling them and I rushed to the bazaar.

I told them that I must have them ID'd. She gave them to me and a guildmate cast on me.

Unfortunately they were Hera's.
