tried to use this and said it needs to be attuned. I can't figure out how to do that.
I assume your asking about the speckled green egg from the Stomples day quest called: Here Comes Spring"?
According to other sources:
NOTE: The Speckled Green Eggs seem to have five (5) uses for a Treant illusion attached to them. However, the click effect will not trigger because they are attunable and there is no way to attune (equip) them. Might there be a secret use?
