last confirmed drop of this was back in 2004 (I've personally seen it passed around multiple progression servers, so we know it still drops...).

Considering much of the thread about the item concerns it's "awesome necro appearance" it would be good to get a pic of someone wielding this item.

We could also use a modern item window pic of this item.

cha

My necro got very low cha some one gave me this wepon woot it not to bad.The 1.00 sec stun is great. And i contrll my pet he does do what i tell him so the -cha does not matter. And it is for a quest as well.and with wepon or not my necro can fear reds to green and not many reds resist.
really worth 600pp?

No, not worth 600. Pretty much junk. People buy it for the looks.

Smoldering brand, or several other cheap weapons with better ratios available for newbies. By the time this procs, you probably won't be meleeing much, and will want an item with stats/effect in primary.
Mistake?
# Jun 27 2003 at 11:21 AM Rating: Decent
I bought this at bazaar for 1 SILVER -- SILVER !!! I then sold it to a vendor for 75 plat! I made 74p 9g 9s for doing absolutely nothing! Was this a mistake to sell it this low? Or is it an easy item to get?
Looks cool

I just replaced my +5 INT dagger (forgot name) with this staff on my necro on advice of a few guildies. Haven't done anything since (logged directly) but it sure looks a whole lot better on a necro - and that's already worth the 100pp 1 spent on it in Bazaar (not sure about the loss of +5 INT though)
Enchanters and melee
# Apr 18 2003 at 4:24 PM Rating: Decent
I just bought one of these in bazaar for 5pp yesterday! I would never have bought or camped one otherwise. It seems to be mainly a necro weapon, but for the price I paid it makes a great skull-topped whoop-a$$ stick.
I know, for an enchanter the -CHA is terrible, but with a +25 CHA Opal Encrusted Stein in the secondary slot it doesn't hurt. Now that I have it, and am of a level for the proc to trigger, I love it! I will use it whenever I need to raise 1H Blunt.
And for my 2cp on caster melees: One technique for enchanters in melee after level 20 is to chain-stun using our Color series of spells. They are AE stuns centered on the caster, and the range is short so you have to be within melee range. Since you are in melee range anyway and there's really no time to med between casting stuns, you may as well have auto-attack on and get a few whacks in and hopefully a proc or two. Chain-stunning saves a LOT of health by keeping the mob stunned almost every second. Due to the mana drain from chain-casting I don't recommend this unless you have KEI, or if your healer is OOM and you want to give your tank a breather.
I should say, I will only equip this when I'm raising 1H Blunt or using the above technique, or kiting. I usually have my Stein of Moggok and either my Opal Encrusted Stein or a +INT weapon in hand.

Whoever sold it to you is an idiot!!! With my Charisma gear on vendor offered me 95pp for it. Wish I knew who sold it to you hehe
i'D GIVE TO..
# Oct 28 2002 at 3:30 AM Rating: Default
looks like a necro weapon to me I'm told the -charisma makes fears last longer but I'm just a ranger what do i know
RE: i'D GIVE TO..
# Mar 13 2003 at 5:44 PM Rating: Decent
That's an urban legend. Charisma has absolutely nothing to do with fear landing or sticking.

You know what. Charisma should have an effect on fearing.

Maybe not fear, but for enchanter's cha is a MUST for charming.
I still use mine at 47
# Apr 21 2002 at 1:52 AM Rating: Decent
I got one of these from an enchanter in my guild when I was level 4. She had never used it, I have used this and still do at level 47. Why do people assume that something is "worthless" or "stupid for an Enchanter to use" just because it has -9 Cha. When I'm going to be bashing something, it's usually because I'm not charming or mezzing. Besides I have so much Charisma jewelry that I can swap out if I'm using this and my Crude stein in my off hand more than makes up for the -9Cha. Even with this staff I have a 180 Cha, more than enough to charm anything I need to. I mean after all, if I'm going to be in the thick of it, and mana is not an issue, why should I be wearing int gear instead of charisma gear.

After getting jeweler's trophee, i've decided to play my chanter a bit. (lvl 5 means she canr even enchant clay or silver :-) came across this weap for just a hundred plat, only drawback is the -9 cha but that's with a +50 cha item that's not of a big problem. Now lvl 12 and enjoying the effects of charm. (total cha 180) even higher mobs can be charmed for quite a decent time. So it's an excellent weap me, and the figures i hit with it now make the damgeoutput compared to my my animation a bit less embarassing.
Not to Bad
# Nov 19 2001 at 10:55 PM Rating: Default
Unlike most Caster Weapons this thing really isnt that bad. THink about it... It only has 4 more delay than Icetooth Claws, and the Same Damage. The CHA- doesnt help, but when you fighting that doesnt really matter... Unless yo are playing crowd control. In wich case -9 CHA is not worth using. But really, its atk/del ratio is pretty nice... just my opinion.

Icetooth Claws are 11/30 that is 2 more attack and 3 less delay. However depending on your level I agree that this staff isn't too bad, except casters never tank (or shouldn't)... but heck for a bard why not?
RE: correction
# Mar 27 2002 at 1:02 PM Rating: Default
Sorry but have to shoot you down. Casters SHOULD tank, and keep up 1hb or piercing skill. this will take some of the damage pressure off of the tanks. think about it, the casters hit for 14 - 18 with this thing and not horribly slow either. that adds up to alot pre 30. This is a nice toy for mages, wizzies, and necros, bards and enchanters need the CHA for charming (the only time cha matters btw) but the other 3 can do some serious damage with it.
RE: correction
# Dec 18 2001 at 2:34 PM Rating: Decent
Because bards need charisma. /bonk The staff is best suited for a necro.

/bonk

Necros supposedly need charisma to better control their pets, or so I was told long ago.

Necros have full control of their pet, like magicians, with or without good charisma...

btw, worse is the necro charisma, better is their fear series spells

enough with the bonking! yeesh!

actually cha, negative or positive, has no effect on necros except in certain limited circumstances. And in those yeah, it helps to be on the positive side. However it's a fairly minor difference as I understand it. Actually, from what I've heard cha doesn't have that large an effect for chanters either, spell wise. Of course, never played either of these classes myself, just going from what my admitedly limited research into the subject has shown. I could be wrong.

Twinks
# Aug 31 2001 at 11:19 PM Rating: Default
I dont believe that there is anything wrong with twinking. I however, am not a twink. I had a Silver tome with Black Runes which i bought with hard earned platinum, and I was lucky enough to find someone with Staff of Writhing who wanted the tome. Snce these go for about 500pp on my server(Tholuxe Paells), and I only paid 250pp for the book, I got a fair deal =).
This is an awesome staff, for the looks and damage at lower lvls, and then the proc at lvl 28, plus it will still be probably the coolest looking weapon for casters. Even walking into a zone though, Everyone whos sees me instantly calls me a twink then proceeds to tell everyone else that im a twink. When i say im not a twink, i get condescending remarks. Combined with Flowing Black, Nobles robe(which I have) or froglok bonecaster robe(which i would kill for), it makes a really great outfit. So when someone calls u a twink because you have this staff before lvl 28, beam a /smile at them, then give 'em a good /finger for me :)
Re: What is so great
# Jul 08 2001 at 12:17 AM Rating: Default
I use one of these with my 33 chanter on Luclin when I hunt mammoths for tusks. Great for fear kiting 8^). My 1hb is 100 btw so it sometimes will proc 4 or 5 times in a fight. Thats an extra 200 or more dmg to a mob if you include the melee dmg. Would'nt you like to have 200 hp dmg to a mob free of any mana cost? I like my staff 8^).

You can't charm while you have a pet.
It's not that bad.

This Staff is simply great for casters who don't twink, or who are unable to twink up to level 30 or even higher.

Yeah it's true you can buy items that are a lot better but if you decide that you would rather earn things the "old fashioned way" and not twink these are great. Because if you are a caster then your money would be better spent on good INT increasing clothing and jewelery than a new higher damage lower delay weapon.

Some of the posts say its a bit sad to have this at the time it procs, well if you are a melee class then yeah you really should have gotten a better one by this time, but if you're a caster don't look down on it.

BTW it's been a while since I've used the item but I remember distinctly that it would proc 2-3 times every battle. I might be mistaken about that however.
Good bard weapon
# Jun 01 2001 at 9:46 AM Rating: Default
This is a great bard weapon. With decent Dex I can get it to proc 3 or 4 times in a fight which more than makes up for its poorer damage:delay ration compared to other weapons I could be wielding at lvl 30. Plus it looks cool.
Obviously I just have to make sure I dont equip it when I'm charming.
Pricing
# May 25 2001 at 11:01 AM Rating: Default
As an update on the pricing. It is going to close to 200pp now in all the zones I'm trying to buy it in.
