This should be flagged in the original classic expansion so that it shows up in searches for those on a TLP in classic.

I think I'll be heading to Guk, faction be damned, to get one of these for my ranger. Tanking solo is getting harder so I need to group more and replace my off-hand wep with a shield so I don't pull too much aggro away from the more heavily armored party members.

Recently I decided hey, it's 4am and there's no one in UpperGuk - so I decided to do some farming. This Spider spawned for me almost ever 10 minutes or so and in a 2 hour period I had 5 shields and 1 set of armor. The other times the other spider spawed and I got nada. - Just my 2 cents.

What is the spawn rate of Giant Spider?

I usually hang around the heart spider room in UGuk for a few minutes hoping to catch a Giant heart spider and upgrade my Velium Shield. I don't hang around there too long cuz Guk is a looter's paradise, and I can't stand being in the same room too long especially when I can afford to buy 100 of these shields. But, my question is, what the hell is the spawn rate of the GIANT spiders? I've been here for three spawn rates at a time (killed every freaking spider in the joint), and only caught a glimpse of three or four "large" spiders. Will I see a giant spider, say once per hour? Anyone know?

Oh, and just a few tips for all you paladins out there: Only fight undead. Go to Luclin and buy the first three spells for Pallies (lvl 9, 15 and 30 spells). Spook the Dead costs 5 mana... and is our most underused spell. Imagine this: cast the lvl 30 Luclin spell (which makes ANY weapon proc a 225dd vs undead), use a shield and ghoulbane. Fight up to 5 undead blues/whites at a time. How? Fear the one you are fighting. Switch to a new mob then fear it after 10 seconds. Repeat until all but one mob is on you. Repeat when the first feared mob returns. Undead ping-pong. Wheee!

Oh, and when GB and your Luclin spell procs, undead don't last very long.

Want to make your fights less harmful? Cast the lvl 15 luclin spell (Desist - 2.5 second stun, 15 mana), run behind the mob a'la a rogue and imediately Bash it. Another 2.5 second stun.

If you are a paladin and you do not use and perfect these techniques, then you are not getting the best of your character.

I camped the Heart Spiders about a week ago for about a total of 4 hours over two days. During that time, I saw 3 giant spiders. Of the 3 I got two of these shields and one Chitin Shell Armor drop. Not too bad really.... The point I want to make is that I used my 25th level ogre SK to camp this. And he died twice during the camp. If you aren't careful to conn the other spiders, they may join in and give you a fight with 3-4 spiders. A GROUP of level 20s can probably take this camp, but as far as soloing is concerned, unless you are twinked up pretty good, I don't see how you can take it before 24. 25 was a pretty good struggle, I promise you that. I did make some good money selling the spider silks though...and along with getting some good armor, for the time that I spent, I thought it was the best camp I had ever done by myself. I came away with about 9 stacks of spider silk, a nice shield and BP that I am very proud of.

I lvl 20 now, and what sucks (or maybe not) is that I cannot dual wield being a Paladin. So instead of hitting for 20 or so every 3 seconds i hit for 20, bash for 10, hit for 20 3 seconds after the first hit, and bash again 5 seconds after the first bash. Bashing delay is so horrible! Can you imagine if the delay was the same as sword! The monster would be lucky to NOT be stunned. So, while not hitting for 20 or so, it bashes the enemy... this is good for not one, or two, but 3 ways. It acts as a spell interrupter, it also takes away one round of attack for the monster, and it also makes the monster stop running from you (I dont know about the higher level monsters, but if I bash a mob when they're walking a way from a long battle, they stop in place for a couple of seconds). So, that spell it interrupted could have in some cases saved you 75hp damage from a Orc Priest or some other caster, that stun it gave to the monster will not allow him to attack for a couple of seconds meaning free hits for yourself or free heal during battle, and those bashes that you give to the mob while they walking away from you keeps them still preventing others from joining him in battle. So, while its not as strong as another sword, it saves you from casting mobs (by interrupting their spells), from malee mobs (by stunning them), and does something like a "mini root" when they start to walk away. My 2cp. See you in the Lake of Omen

Not magic
# Jun 30 2001 at 3:01 PM Rating: Decent
For you paladins who think this shield is nice, it has good ac for lower levels, but you are definately going to want a magic shield instead. I have experienced countless times where i am up against a caster and i try to bash them to interrupt their spell, but they are INVULNERABLE. I got rid of this shield and went back to the shiney brass, its ac isn't as good, but it is magic and it has a nice +10 sv magic.

The next higher step up on shields after this all of the sudden get expensive. I was in EC when I caught someone sellin this. Got it and the Shiny Brass Shield both for 60pp. I really like the AC it adds to you, I care less for the 10VSPOI stat as I already have Cure Poison spell being a Paladin. And whats the next higher AC shield to this, that isn't too expensive?

This is a nice shield for about 30pp, its got great AC for a shield of that price and the 10 poison resistance isn't to shabby either but the fact that poison resistance is one of those MORE useless resistances and that there are plenty of these being sold makes it so cheap, over all this is a GREAT shield for the adventurer(up to level 25 or so) at such a cheap price, if you find one and you got the money (or even if you don't have the money you can work out a deal) buy it right away becuase there is less of a market for them now. Thanks fer yer time fellow adventurers.

The poison resistance can actually be very useful in specific situations.
One that comes to mind is the level 25 fungus mutant in upper guk, which is camped to get components for the paw of opolla. He casts a nasty "Clockwork Poison" that makes you spin in place for a few seconds, unable to do anything. Between the chitin shell shield and a couple other items, plus my endure poison spell, I had boosted my poison resist to over 60. In the 10 hours or so I spent hunting the fungus mutant, I don't think he ever managed to make Clockwork Poison stick more than once in a fight. Instead he wasted all his time trying to cast a spell that I kept resisting, so he was a rather easy kill. (I was a low 30's druid at the time.)

Even now I keep this shield in the bank in case I get a chance to join a raid on the poison dragon Trakanon.

I underestimated the importance of resists for a long time. Now I wear a lot of my resist gear fulltime (though it does focus on magic/fire/cold).
Good Sheild

I think this the best shammy sheild for early levels for 2 reasons - lite enough to carry as a spare AND sv poison IS REALLY IMPORTANT when we use our poison AoE's (when in close qtrs) so as not hit ourselves too hard.

Got it at lvl 21 - a little late but its ez to get by yourself. Frogloks in route to were green to me. I pulled ti zone after clearing out the 1st room so it wouldnt have too many friends: peice of cake - wish i had seen it earlier :(

# Feb 27 2001 at 10:55 AM Rating: Good
not too many shields in the game are as easy to get as this one and it has killer graphics. if you hunt in FoB, the +10 Sv Poison really kicks in, as Heart sting scorpions as well as bonebinders can and will sting you / poison you, it is like a DoT and will affect you, this shield helps a lot.

Additionally, not too many shields of this level offer an AC of as high as 15, i think this is one of the more under-rated shields in the game. at only 4, it is light too, for the stats it has on it.

just my opinion
