OK..This is not a shield. You cannot bash with it at all. If you are a large race you have the ablilty to SLAM which is a racial trait that is based off the bash skill.
People seemed confused by this. SLAM uses the bash skill to determine hits and damage, however your ability to hurt magic creatures is based on what your are wearing in your shoulder slot. What you are wielding in your off hand makes no differense if you are using SLAM.
If you are using BASH then you will need to have a shield equiped in your off hand. For magical creatures it must be a magical shield.
This item is a piercing weapon. You will have to be at least level 13 and trained in duel wield to use it since it is offhand only. It is also extremely slow, I would recommend using a dragon dirk or some such to build up piercing before I would wield this weapon.
*Personally* I think this weapon is absolute crap, especially for the level you need to be to obtain it. On the other hand for lower levels this weapon gives some extra ac at an affordable price, and it looks stylin.

I ran some tests using copelands weapon analyzer, for those of you who subscribe to the mechanicalistic way of playing EQ.
For a level 50 warrior, str 110 and no haste, the difference in damage output between this in the offhand and a Short sword of the Ykesha is only 50 points of damage per minute. Yes, only 50 damage per minute. That's because offhand damage is truly trivial compared to primary hand damage.
Same scenario, level 50 warrior, str 110 and no haste, the Jade mace outperforms this shield by a little more than 100 points of damage per minute. Again, not that much, and a jade mace is a pretty nice weapon.
It would seem to me that 9 raw AC is more than worth the 50 or 100 damage per minute you lose, but LOL no one will believe me - at least my guild warriors don't.
True, there is no damage bonus to your off-hand weapon. Therefor ratio (and possibly procs or bonuses) are the only thing that count there.
This piercing weapon (its not a shield, you can't bash with it) has a 1-4 dmg/dly, which puts it on par with other newbie weapons like a dragoon dirk, langseax etc..
A yak has a 1-3 dmg/dly ratio and procs a 75 point DD. They are not in the same league.
A jade mace has a 1-2 dmg/dly ratio it owns this.
How is a lvl 50 warrior supposed to taunt anything using a 41 dly weapon with almost no damage?
Basically your argument is the same as 'Hey! A banded Tunic has 15ac and its a lot cheaper than a EBBP which has only 10ac more! Everyone should just wear banded.'
As for copelands.. This weapon does 107 dmg/minute offhand on a lvl 50 warrior unhasted. Yak does 160, plus creates a lot of taunt from the proc, Jade Mace does over 210. Yes, you are correct a JM does 'only 100 more' , but keep in mind this is half the damage output from your off-hand, not the same as comparing 700 dmg/minute to 800 dmg/minute.
No, it's not like he's saying "just buy a banded tunic" because a banded tunic does not have damage output like a slain unicorn does. If you had a breastplate that you could fight with and it had 4 points less AC than a bp that is just AC, then you might consider using the lower AC breastplate in order to do extra damage. Thus, while the shield does less damage than the yak, it cuts down on the amount of damage you take. That is his argument, and it's still a good one.
I just got one for 40pp, it not only looks cool, but I can dual wield and double attack with it. I also picked up a Berserker's axe, and I finally LOOK like a real dwarven warrior as they appear in classic fantasy fiction. I am most pleased with this weapon, and would reccomend it to all.Now I just have to get my piercing skill up =) Later guys.
Drune warrior of the 18th notch The Seventh Hammer
i can't use this shield at lvl 10...it was given to me by a good friend. Anyone know why, or what lvl i can use it? I am a barbarian warrior. Thanks for help!
Why would a unicorn be carrying a weapon made from a dead unicorn? True there are some odd occurances where a piece of armor made from a creature drops from the creature when it dies (eg. chitin shell shield), but i've always thought that was kinda poor roleplay. Makes more sense to have the item drop off the arch enemy of a unicorn.
Hehe I saw this and thought well, maybe it would make sense if it did drop off a unicorn. Like, the way "a spider venom sac" or whatever it's called drops off of spiders, truly that is only a label we put on such an item. So this "shield" may have been... what, a very very wide horn? :D Or maybe the horn plus part of the top of the skull? It's up to your imagination, but I think it would make sense if it dropped off a unicorn, Just like the shell "shield" of Lodizal drops off Lodizal. I mean, Lodizal didn't have a shell and think "Oh this is my shield", but instead just had a naturally strong shell which is called a shield by those who decide to slay him.
There are a couple problems with your argument. First, a spider venom sac is a piece of the spider, like a wolf skin is a piece of the wolf, removed by careful skinning/cutting by the person who killed it. This is a finely crafted weapon, which the graphic clearly demonstrates. Also, with regard to Lodizal's shell, he DOES NOT drop the lodizal shell shield. He drops a lodizal shell, which can be made into a shield through a quest.
Now thats not to say that a mob can never drop a weapon that is part of it's body. A drachnid leg tip, for example, makes sense as a stiff chitinous stabbing tool, which is useful as is. Garou bone club, similarly, is merely a bone from garou, which is clubsized. Also, giant snake fang; just a nice sized, naturally sharp implement.
But an item called "shield of the slain unicorn" isn't the same as a chunk of unicorn head with the horn still on it. If it was called "a unicorn horn" and was just a piercing weapon, with no ac, I could see it dropping off a unicorn.
Hey, I got one of these for my level 13 Warrior and it keeps saying 'You must equip a shield in order to BASH' or some BS like that. Can you not use it to bash while Dual Wielding or something? Someone please help, send any info to Zionjoshy@hotmail.com. Thanks.
Actually, large races (Trolls and Ogres (Barbs?) can Slam with this "shield" however, which counts as a magic bash attack (normally a slam isn't magic, even with a magic weapon in hand). I just picked one up from my Troll Warrior and it's pretty sweet, I think. He's lvl 14 now and with this I can dual wield and slam-bash ghouls, willowisps, etc.
Small races however, probably won't like it as they can't slam and thus it's just a not-so-great piercing weapon...although the AC might make up for it.
No shield enables magical creatures to be hit by slam. The Slam ability uses the shoulders and so having a magical mantle or pauldron of some sort should enable you to hit magical creatures. (I'm about 80% sure about this statement), I could be wrong
Actually, slam ability uses the off-hand. My Barb shaman can slam magical creatures with my Testament of Vanear (a book) or my Crude Stein in the off hand. Magic shoulders doesn't do squat for slam.

You cannot bash with it because it is a weapon, the larger races however can slam with it and I have found the occasional critical hit (44+) makes the combat short and sweet just when you think it's about to turn nasty.
Tips: Work on your piercing skill so that when you hit you do more damage, this will more than compensate for the lack of speed, Save a few points and when you get the skills pour your points into dual wield and double attack.
Larger races can slam at any time. They can slam when dual wielding anything. This "shield" isn't a shield at all. It's a weapon with AC and the look of a shield.
