So now I have Giant Militia Longsword in primary, and Gnoll Slayer (Final) in secondary. Kicking it old school.

Some items can indeed be charged. But the research I have found indicates only Gnome tinkered items. This is not such.

Let me help folks with this quest. I now have my 3rd one.

The gnoll that drops the baby, spawns in the same place as the snake. No special things need to be done to get him to spawn except kill the snake, didnt time the spawn but it seems about 7 minutes or so. It seems to take about 4-5 snakes to get the gnoll. So he is an uncommon spawn. Its random, so it may be longer or shorter.

The gnolls that drop the other quest items now are in South Karana, not in the gnoll dungeon, that dungeon has been taken over.

They run on the north end of South Karana, and go east to west, or west to east. I believe they share the same spawn cycle as lions, lioness, a named gnoll, another escaped gnoll, perhaps a cyclops, undead cyclops, 1 centaur, and 1 or 2 aviaks. If such mobs are traveling North and South, and not east and west, they do not share the same mob spawn cycle. Note some of these mobs travel north and south, as well as east to west. You are concerned only with east to west (or west to east)mobs. While elephants may also travel east to west (&west to east) they don't seem to be on the same cycle.

I also believe there is more than 1 cycle for these mobs. I have seen 2 right after each other.

1 thing to note after you get the sword, don't try and pop the pet out if you have a familiar. You will waste a charge and not get the pet. You can't have both up.

Please note the pet is not a proc, you have to hold the sword and click on it to pop it.

Also I have tried turning in the sword with empty charges and see if it comes back charged, it does not. Nor can you trick the NPC and get the sword by giving him the intermediate one. The only way thats gonna work is if someone turned in the other items 1st.

An uncharged sword does not sell for anything, nor can it be donated to Tribute. And destroy it before you turn in new quest items before you get a new one. They are lore.
Anyone find out How to charge this yet ??

Because SOE decided to take the splitpaws out of Splitpaw Lair, this quest is very easy to do now, and it's one of my favorites to play with.
The 2 Placeholders spawn close to the Northern riverbank in South Karana now. The generic PH is "an escaped splitpaw gnoll", which can re-spawn as any of a list of named splitpaws, including the "a one eyed gnoll" and the "a Lteth Val Scribe". Other spawns I have seen include High Shaman Phido, High Shaman Grisok, Zrithsadioun and Pet. Others may include the Cyclops. I usually have to camp for about an hour, but have gotten lucky to find them on track as soon as I zone in. These 2 Placeholders are not to be confused with the ones further south that spawn the Ishiva Mal and other nameds near the mid-east part of the zone. This quest is practically impossible without a tracker. My Ranger gets alot of tells asking where his pet came from.

Because the sword only holds 2 charges, I log in my Magician, and summon a "Pet Kit" and drop it on the ground, then log in my Ranger. I clicky the pet up, and equip him. With 1 charge left on the sword, I take my new pup out to South Karana, and farm the 2 named for the Eye, and Journal, effectivly giving me "3" charges, and keep those in the bank. The next time I log in, and use the last charge on the sword, I quickly go kill Lord Elgnub, and do the turn-in for a new sword, then go farm another 2 named for the Eye and Journal again, giving me a Gnoll Slayer with 2 charges, and the items I need for another turn in (2 more charges) and I have the pet up at the time, giving me the equvalent of 4 charges + got the pet already. (Please Remember: Destroy the Zero Charge Gnoll Slayer before doing a 2nd turn-in!!! Duplicate Lore Not Allowed (Learned this lesson turning in the Grimling Runner Pouch to Rallic Aristos))

The Pet hits for about 10 max, LOL. With a Summoned: Hand of Ixiblat will proc with frequency dependent on the DEX. Use Summoned: Crystal Belt to increase DEX and durability along with Full Summoned: Phantom Platemail, and the lower level Magician Jewelry. I say low level Mage Jewelry because the pet's actual level is something like level 32. All equipment level recomendations apply to the pet at level 32, so high level stuff will only see 1s on the stats for it. The same goes for the level for weapon proc. I like to use a Gnoll Hide Lariat in the off hand to stun casting type mobs, and once I have the hand slots occupied, I add an Elemental Defender that defaults to the Back (Cloak) slot if hands are full. Can also buy cheap rings or earrings with better AC. Pet shares your level for buffs, so in my case, I get him buffed with Conviction and Wunshi + Haste buff. (Sadly Rangers don't get Pet Affinity... <sniffle>)

Blade of Walnan and Blade of Kedge will not proc, and the HP bonus isn't enough to justify the loss of DPS with good procs, and Dex buff (+ Crystal Belt). Putting Fireblade or higher level Mage Pet Toys will make the damage output of this pet USELESS. It is nearly impossible to keep this pet alive in 60+ zones (if it winds up stealing agro or tanking), taking this pet to a 60+ zone is like taking a glass figurine to a hokey game. If you are careful, you can pull it off (I have) but if you are careless, the pet will drop like a rock. It will hold up reasonably well with heals in a 50+ zone, as long as you can keep most the agro off it, and it rocks for skill farming in green zones. Great for Ranger Kiting, cause the pet can't steal agro from your arrow shots, can snare, DoT, and shoot, and this pet adds a little DPS and companionship.

I took one of these to a RAID and sic'd it on Terris Thule. We both survived, and I got a screenshot.

Basically a nice post.

However, as you have a mage, I am surprised that you are so far off on pet and their toys. Extensive testing, see forums on mage's compedium or EQ Summoners, shows that pets IGNORE rec and req levels for stat gear as well as lore tags. A level 1 pet can use and will get full benefit from the highest level mage summoned gear and can use, for example, 2 burning shanks. However, pets appear to have only 1 ring, bracer, and earring slot.

You are correct on the proc'ing. In this case, the pet level determines when it can proc an item. The Hand of Ixiblat only requires level 10 to proc so it will, while prime armaments require a pet level of 70 to proc - the pet will get 400hp from duel weilding the two prime weapons though and may see improved white damage. So, damage from hand proc or lots more HP, take your pick.

In summary, to maximize this pet as of SOF expansion, give it a full set of prime armor(minus the bracer), Nastel's heirlooms (give the Jade bracelet with +atk not the Linked bracelet), a muzzle of mowcha, 2 weapons of choice. If you want to keep the pet, shroud before camping.

hello ppl!
when lucin came out i saw on the cover, a beastlord-type with a wolf that looked solid. so i make a bst and get to level 9 to find i didnt get a pet wolf.. i got a soddy tigre. i would of made a barbarian bst...but i decided to make a shammy..then i find out shammy dont get wolf till 34...

then i went away and came bk with mr.Uber SK and found out he had a pet. i had kept the bst and now know how important a pet is. so i am always seen with my little skelly nowdays.

then, on general chat i saw gnoll lsayer linked. im like Whao! i want it. what i didnt c is that it has two charges. is it really worth it if i get faction up with my ikky, then start the quest..only to have my pet stripped away... OR can i coem bk when i have the pet dicipline that keeps him active over log-out, and make the wolf stay (of course, ill beg the cleric in my grp to heal my pet, not me...*laff*)then kmake him live forever like a good boy? has NO one thought of this yet?

Can't honestly say whether or not your Pet AA's on your SK would apply to this. Would be cool if it did. But by the time you get your pet AA's, this guy wouldn't be nearly as good as your normal pet. But it'd be a good alternative choice for SK's between levels 34 and 46.

Both can be found close to the bridge at zone into S Karana. Not sure of spawn times but have killed both several times with my Ranger. they seem to stay close to the water and path mostly E to W and W to E. I have not seen both up at same time. hope this helps!

Personally, I love this thing! My 59 ranger having a wolf just rocks. And by himself, no, the beast is not real impressive. But with buffs and mage pet gear, he's capable of some fairly nice extra DPS. I've always thought that a ranger without a trusty dog/wolf at his side was just wrong, but since discovering this quest, the world just seems a little more "right." Don't discount his low level. No, he ain't gonna be tanking mobs in Natimbi, but he'll be right there beside you adding hurt to whatever mob you're workin on. And the true beauty of the whole thing is that the quest is a quick and easy one to do.

For a ranger, it's all about the DPS. And this is an easy way to give yourself just a little more "Umph!"

Now if we could just get some pet AA's......

Agreed, I just got ambushed in The Hole, I had my entire Buff spell set, and it was obvious my melee wasn't gonna cut the mustard. Pet was on him like.. well you know, anyways, I ran up the ramp, sat down, and memmed half my attack spell set, enough to dot and nuke, and ran back - pet was at 40%, I finished off the mob, and I'll say, without that pet, I'd be dead.

The gnolls needed to complete the quest now roam in South Karana. I found both of them near the skellie camp by the zone in point from NK.

Was very disappointed with the pet that is called with this weapon. Not much use other than as a conversation piece on why a ranger has a pet.

# Mar 06 2005 at 2:57 PM Rating: Decent
Glad to here they moved the mobs for this quest from paw to south karana. Whenever I used to find myself near paw, I'd pop in and get the items for the quest. Pet isn't much use to a 54 ranger, but it's fun to have people ask me how a ranger has a pet. Just a fun quest, nothing more.

Is this item rechareable in any way? It's a great quest, but I feel like I should NEVER use the effect cause it only has 2 charges! If it had more, it would be a MUCH better weapon.

Just became a quest worth doing. At mid level doing this quest should be reletively easy and now that pets last forever as long as they don't die or you're not logged off for 30 minutes they are a twink's dream and a non twink's powerleveler. No matter what you are doing to solo you probably are gonna have the aggro on you so you should never even need to heal them just let them do the extra damage. I've gotta try this now :p...

I helped a friend of mine get her Gnoll's Eye and Journal at the end of the quest. While we were chatting, the two quest mobs respawned so I got myself a copy. She was a lev 40ish ranger, and I think i was about 50 ranger. I figured it was all just a fun little quest, until i realised the twinking potential.

I'm going to park my lev 5 bard in Splitpaw and get him to loot the baby. If this quest can be multiquested, and there's no minimum level for the spell, then this can be a phenominal PL item!

Imagine a level 5 character with a level 39 shaman's pet!?

I'll write again to say if the MQ and level requirements all works out. In the mean time, anyone think of a good level to use this in? Has to be one without adds, and mobs from 1-30.

Aye... I MQed this sword to a level 5 Pally... and alas it didn't work...

I'm rather upset because the effect doesnt say it has a req level.... Although obviously it SHOULD have a req level, if it doesn't say it has one it shouldn't have one....

Whatever...

Ok, well I JUST got this sword for my lv 7 warrior, and NO you cannot cast the pet spell at that lv.

By the way, the item CAN be mutly-quested. I handed in the eye and book with my 53 druid, logged off, logged on my 7 Warrior, handed in the sword, and that was it.

ok i went down there to splitpaw, found a pally and wizard..both within a few levels of me{lvl. 35 warrior} and that group wasent so hot..didnt get far beyond the double doors. looks like we coulda got to where we needed to go if it wasent for the link dead dwarf. maybe tomorrow ill get down there far enough? place is pretty tough..it wouldnt have been bad with a cleric or shaman.

Ok to get these items you will need a full group of 35+-- because that is the level of the gnolls beyond bridge. or Invisi to get to the rooms where the dude with journal is-- hes a white gnoll, in with a brown and a white gnoll. or at least 3 50+ cause you will get mobbed on the way in ,or out, or both -unless you port out like i did. GL and have fun.

I did it as a 34 ranger with just a 25 cleric and 25 wiz for succor. probably woulda done better with a druid instead of a wiz cos the gnolls resisted alot cos of level difference. eitherway it was close thought. coming to think of it i had a 25 rogue help me too. lots of lvl 25s on test server for some reason :P

I did a funeral for him with all the honors I could muster.

I started this quest with My 26 Warr who is now 40.I still carry Weapon in my offhand- when hunting Gnolls i switch to primary with haste Item(FBSS),does nice damage-hits up to 90.Worked well on Splitpaw Gnolls, Will try the Darkpaw(Jaggedpine)in a few lvls. The graphic is disapointing -looks like a Newb sword. I have seen it look different eq. by other players.Poss.to do with the lvl of the player who hands in? or maybe it will change at 45?Also -has any one tried on Drovlargs in DL? (and lived? hehe).GL hope this helps is worth getting IMHO.

Got this sword the other day (then immediately went and quested the intermediary for kicks)

-Helpful Hint. or What I learned on My Holidays in Splitpaw- Once you get to the level of the One Eyed Gnoll it can be quite hard to find your way back to the upper level. We eventually found our way back by finding the water and swimming. There's a big underwater tunnel thing that leads you back to top level. Back to your regularly schedule raving:

I wield it in Primary with my lower delay Stone Bladed Axe (13/26) in Secondary.

Now I've mostly been picking off the Tesch Mas Gnolls outside Paw in South Karana and, before getting this sword, I was hitting for in the region of 33 damage per hit, sometimes double attacking for 33,34 and an offhand attack for 22.

After combat I'd be down to about 40% health or less. Time to med up, heal up and go again.

Not anymore, my friends. Now I hit for 66-75pts with primary and 33-35 with my quick offhand strikes. Double attacking with the Gnoll Slayer does in the region of 108-148 damage, plus any offhand attack means, in one round of combat I can dispense up to 180pts of damage.

At Lvl 28 this means I can take a Tesch Mas Gnoll out completely, still at around 70% health. Enough to go again straight away.

I went on a grand tour of BlackBurrow for some fun last night and killed every mob in every room with an L12 in tow to reap loots :) That was revenge on a grand scale.

I love this sword!

Doggies don't.

okay, I have this weapon very cool esp now that Jaggedpine is on the map. woot!

Yes this version is Lore, however, you CAN go and get the lesser version to weild in offhand and have both if you wanted to... Not sure that is a good idea, but IF anyone wanted to, you can complete the first part of the quest again...

Me personally I will wield this final version with my Wurmy and go own some Jaggedpine Gnolls for faction there... Also with the +25 poison it is not bad at all for the occasional raid where that is needed.

The club of gnoll bashing is probably better than the intermediary version of gnoll slayer, so go do the gnoll invasion plan quest starting with rilca leafrunner in qeynos hills at the campfire right outside of surefall. The club is a lore item,primary/secondary 1hb with 28 delay and 7 dmg. Damage bonus of 3, Gnoll bane dmg 5 +2str, +2agi, HP+5, mana+5, weight 2.5 all/all.

It means total. As in, once you use it twice, it's gone. Nice for rangers, as you get a bit of a dmg bonus with this in the form a pet. I know pets are nice to have in melee classes and even rangers... I have a SK main, after all.

But I also have a ranger alt, and if you're looking for a good weapon, look for bows.

Does anyone here with the sword, or with an alt that uses pets, know if telling your pet to 'go away' counts as a charge?

Reason being, I used my charges for first time today - first one I told to go away (doh) while exploring the pet commands and what they do. Second one got killed after a fine night's hunting in Stonebrunt, but not before keeping a panda and two big gorillas of my back long enough for me to run away. Good wolf =)

Strangely enough though, my sword now reads that it has 1 charge left, even though I can't seem to activate it...is this because I told pet to go away (and if so, can I get it back), or does an empty sword look like this to everyone who has one?

The charge is used when the Companion is first summoned, not when it departs - so it really doesn't matter how the spirit is disposed of...
