how do you summon pet?
# Mar 25 2003 at 4:13 AM Rating: Decent
I just quested the gnoll slayer last saturday with my 37 ranger (and some help from a 37 rogue). My ranger is my first spell caster in everquest and I forgot (or felt ashamed) to ask my rogue buddy how you activate the pet - can someone help?

love the sword - hits in the 80's - never experienced this before.

Be kind to the "Newbies"!

See next to the effect " (Must Equip. Casting Time: Instant) " That mean you MUST EQUIP IT, it will NOT work from inventory.
#REDACTED, Posted: Jun 12 2003 at 8:57 PM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) sometimes you cant even use it if it doesnt say must equip, then again, your prolly not that experienced are you Mr Enfiniti?
Charges
# Mar 13 2003 at 12:36 PM Rating: Decent
Can u recharge this in PoK now? or maybe somewhere else? havin the extra damage from a pet is always a bonus, but go thru 2 charges quickly. right now i am always refinishing the quest and startin it over to get the final and lesser sword and just cycling thru the 2 weaps. though duel gnoll slayers is fun, it can be a little time consuming this way. any insight, lemme know :)

99.9% of effect items in the game cannot be rechared, this is one of them. Why do people always assume that anything with charges can be recharged?
RE: Charges
# Jun 06 2003 at 9:31 AM Rating: Decent
Because a lot of people treat this game like the Diablo series.
RE: Charges
# Mar 27 2003 at 6:59 AM Rating: Decent
I have posted on the EQ main boards about this, and talked to a lot of people in game, So far i dont see any hope for recharging this item. I personally treied combining it with mana batteries 1-6 each would not combine. Hope we find an answer =)

I was PL'ing my level 10 Paladin Froglok in BB when Lord Elgnub spawned. I killed him and looted the baby. Five minutes later he spawned again.

Anyhow I got the final Gnoll Slayer w/ about another hour's worth of work in Paw. So my low level newbie Paladin is now wielding this nice item. I plan on using it for a little longer in BB and then eventually in Paw and in Jaggedpine. It'd be better for a dual-wield class, but it's a fun thing to have at least.
#animekenji, Posted: Mar 14 2003 at 10:18 AM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) Excuse me?? Level 10 kills Lord Elgnub?? I think not. Elgnub is 21-23 and HT for 210-230 as his first attack. He also poisons, diseases, etc like any other sk. Even if your LoH is up, you are NOT taking him out at level 10.

umm can't be done? I have had lvl 1 solo harder things.. yes it can be done with twink gear.

Sorry, have to differ here - it *can* be done if u r PL'd

My then lvl 14 ranger took on Elgnub and succeeded. I was being PL'd by a 31 druid who did nothing but heal and invigor me. It was hard work but I did kill him without the druid doing any direct damge to him. I was equipped with a centi short sword anda shield. /simply kept bashing him with the shield and he didn't cast anything on me at all - maybe I just interrupted each time when i bashed him.

I didn't set out to get the doll, in fact i didn't know anything about the quest.

He was LB con to the 31 druid

I (30 war) just finished this quest with a little help from an uber...now i'm hitting gnolls for about 60-70 on a regular basis and had a crit f0r 110...not bad for a lvl 30...even if it is usless after you out level SP...it's good enough to make the time go by faster and easier.

P.S. for ksicks and giggles, i went and started the quest again...you can have both the intermediary and the final at the same time...nice against gnolls...about 200 each rnd...not bad eh?
too nice...
# Jan 25 2003 at 3:41 PM Rating: Decent
Just quested this last night . Myself, a 45 ranger and another 46 ranger made the little foray into paw and picked up the eye and journal in no time. Made the turn in and then went gnoll hunting using both the intermediary sword and the Final gnoll slayer. Little ol' ranger quad hits on gnolls for close to 220 each round. I definately cant complain for a quest that took a total of about an hour and ten minutes......

Finally

FINALLY! 61 ranger here. I have waited so long to get this thing. I laid Blackburrow to waste at least once a week for 2 years until about 6 months ago trying to get that Lord ******* to spawn. At 61 it's true that there's no real value to me except that I have finally achieved a dream... a dream that started about a month after I started playing. I, personally, am happy with the weapon itself and would have gladly used it for many levels as it's a really nice midlevel weapon.

So to you people saying this is crap, just keep playing with your Sack full of Rocks and leave this quest to the people who will enjoy owning it =)

p.s. When I turned in the first slayer and the items to get the finished one, Morton gave me back the first one too saying that he didn't need it. Dunno if it's bugged or if it's a change. Anyway, enjoy

#REDACTED, Posted: Dec 20 2002 at 1:04 PM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) 2 charges is a kinda a waste of time to do an hour long quest. since the blade is worth crap, the summonings (obvious) disappear after you zone, die, port, Or log or go ld, this thing isnt worth the quest unless you are a lvl 30-35 who wants to hunt gnolls in splitpaw. which is a horrible idea within itself

Oh will someone get that bug out of his *******

Even though it's not going to make any difference since you're clearly one of those people that thinks everything below your level is now worthless, even for other people - the blade isn't worth crap. In fact, even though it's a little slow, 15 dmg is pretty damn good for a 30-35 sword, it's a LS which is always nice, and the +25 poision is big and hefty. In fact, I'm not even sure why you bothered to post here since all you do is ***** and moan. Perhaps people in the real world stopped listening to you.

PS God knows how you got to 65 thinking that a 2 charge weapon from an hour long quest is a waste of time...
#REDACTED, Posted: Mar 16 2004 at 10:32 PM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) The reason he got to 65 is because he didnt waste a few hours here or there on quests like this that dont help in the long run. Argue it all you want. I'm right.

Technically against a gnoll with bonus, its 31/40 because 15+10 bane + 6 bonus.... thats comperable to some 2HS. Thats a LOT of damage on a 1HS, especially for a ranger. Normally being lighter weight, lower delay but lower damage.

Technically like most weapons if your patient with it, it WILL grow with you. and as ANY melee class knows, use the tool for the job. Just like a caster will use a certain spell on a mob, this just happens to be the bane of all gnolls. I always carry and Arsinal, if for nothing else, for fun. :)~

actually it is only a 25/40 against gnolls. It is that because dmg bonus only applies to final dmg not base dmg so say u hit for 100, with the dmg bonus u hit for 106, see? :D hehe

I've wanted to do this quest. I've finally gotten the intermediary and I am working my way up towards being strong enough to fight in paw.
I was wondering who took that picture, because the charges are strangly missing from it. What's up with that, or did they just snap the pic after the charges were drained and why does he have a damage bonus.

Damage bonus is based on some math based on a character's level and the delay of the weapon. The higher the delay and the higher the character's level, the more damage bonus you'll get. No point comparing weapons based on damage bonuses, just ignore them when looking at stuff ;)
RE: ever since I was a little ranger..
# Dec 30 2002 at 6:10 PM Rating: Decent
since its one hand slashing not two hand the delay makes no nevermind. the formula is lvl 28 gets one bonus, 31 gets two, 34 gets 3, so every 3 lvls after 25 yeild one more damage bonus. i hope this helps.

You must have had more help than that, or there was a guild force clearing out paw for you since a bunch of guildies and I went in with 6 ppl 32-41 and couldn't even get near the PH's let alone wait around for the actual "one-eyed gnoll" and "lteth val scribe" to spawn. I would really like to get one of the drops for my ranger so that she can multiquest it but it looks like it might be more trouble than its worth.
RE: Gnoll Slayer
# Nov 23 2002 at 4:51 AM Rating: Excellent
The key to this quest is the ability to enter paw with stealth... Trying to fight your way into the paw is a bad idea, and is the reason there are so many trains there. I have done this quest 3 times now because I keep wanting more charges of companion spirit and it really is a very easy quest if done right. the most recent time, I finished the quest in 45 minutes from start to finish. I was a 47 ranger with a tolans helmet with the superior camo effect. I threw on a fresh sow and entered paw. I then walked in as far as I could without gaining any aggro. Then threw on camo from my helmet, and walked through the double doors straight through the single door onto the bridge. From the bridge I turned right and dropped off the bridge without taking very much fall damage at all. I then took the first door on the left. Through this door I could see a gnoll standing over a camp fire. This is the spawn point for the one eyed gnoll. Your /loc will be 600, -10. This spot only has one mob. You can drop the camo here and kill the ph or one eyed gnoll without worrying about adds... If the one eyed gnoll was up you should have the gnoll eye which is a no drop item. I haven't ever killed the one eyed gnoll where he didn't have the drop. If the ph wasn't up no worries, heal up, buff up if needed and then throw the camo on again. Go back through the door you came in and hang a left, and follow that hallway until you see a staircase that leads up and to the left. walk past those stair and into the hallway that is partially hidden behind the stairs. The hallway makes a right turn which then opens into a small square room with 2 gnolls in it a barrel a campfire and some other junk 370, -30. If you are level 47 like I was both gnolls should be green and fighting the 2 gnolls at once should be no problem. If you are of a level at which 2 gnolls would be trouble you can successfully fight the gnoll deepest inside the room without the other aggroing if you stand on top of the barrel in the corner when you drop camo. Once you kill the 2 gnolls only one will spawn at the next pop. The gnoll nearest the hallway is the PH for a lteth val scribe. If he was up great he should have had the Journal of Enchantments as I have never killed him where he didn't have it. If not camo up and go back to the one eyed gnoll spot if he wasnt there before. If you alternate between the 2 camps in this manner there should be very little downtime. If you want you can actually pull to the lteth val scribes room. In my experience the one eyed gnoll and the lteth val scribe tend to spawn after only a few cycles. In my three times doing this quest I have never had to wait more than 3 cycles for either mob. On one occasion the lteth val scribe was up when I entered the zone which leads me to reason that they do not despawn. I would not recomend taking a full group to do this quest since the hallways and camps are very cramped. Also one or two characters are better able to keep stealth. The most dangerous part of this quest is the many many possible adds if stealth is lost. I would say if you are in your low 30s attempting this quest you should try and get the help of a level 40 or higher guildy or friend. A druid or wizard would be ideal because of their ability to port out of the zone when the fighting is done. I found that finding the way out is much harder than getting in. With camo on I bumbled around for about 5 minutes trying to find my way out. IF you get lost and camo fades be sure to get to a spot where you wont get aggro when visible. IF other people are fighting near the entrance it may be appropriate to let them know that you are acoming out and might cause a train if things go badly. I know I wished in my upper 20s and low 30s that the people trying to leave paw would have announced their trains. Anyway, I have had a lot of fun with this quest and feel that the sword is well worth the risk, especially if you intend on fighting gnolls at any point. the 10 bane damage is awesome against the gnolls in jaggedpine in the later levels. Plus a Ranger with a pet is always a cool thing.

You can duel wield these. Do the quest for the full version, then do the first part of the quest again, and you can duel wield Gnoll Slayers, put some good haste behind these, and JP Gnolls do not stand a chance. =)

Just got done finishing this quest. Wow, what fun. It's as good as advertised. Against gnolls, it's a wurmslayer style weapon.

And it is a lightsource.

Lots of fun doing the quest. Lots of fun using the sword. Definitely would reccommend it for anyone looking to kill some time deep in Paw. Hardest part was waiting for Elgnub to spawn.

Lord Elgnub spawn
# Jul 29 2002 at 11:08 AM Rating: Decent

The Lord will spawn without killing anything like Elites or High Shamans or triggering any quest. I was in BB, early morning east coast, only a bunch of low levels like 5-8, and only about 10 people in zone. I waited at the pit for an hour and a half and POP, the Lord spawned without me going around clearing anything.

However, I did kill anything that came into or spawned in the pit of spikes except the snakes. Just in case the Lord was on a spawn table, i would kill anything that spawned in his spot but wandered around thinking that it would path back to its original spot.

So leave all those Elites alone for the little guys and just sit your butt down in the spike pit and wait. The Lord will pop (and probably depop pretty quickly) so keep awake!

I obtained this weapon last night in a not so hard fashion. I had already gone and laid siege on BB by myself and had Baby Joseph Sayer and had already tuned it in for the Interim Gnoll Slayer.

A druid guild member (Draxxe!!!) and I went to PAW. A few buffs on me and camo on both, we go into the middle and jump down. Hit the first door and a /loc tells me the one eyed gnoll is probably behind door #1 Monty. Open it up and yes sir, he is there. So we make sure the area is safe and pull him up to the top of the ramp beside where he stands. Slash, slash, root, nuke, dead. Dark Blue to me at lvl 37 but dead none the less. So part 1 done, got the eye. We lesser succor out so we can zone for a SOW rebuff and a full mana charge for Draxxe.

So we rebuff and go back in. Camo near the double doors and jump down again. Following the map and directions we find the little room and the Lteth Val Scribe is standing there with his other buddy. Scribe is dk blue to me and the other gnoll is lt blue. To Draxxe (lvl 42) the scribe is lt blue and the other one is green. So a quick check on the mana and away we go. Well the scribe (with the help of the new NPC caster code) gets me dispelled and mezz'ed. He then pop's Draxxe a few times. When my mezz drops Draxxe is at about 30% health. No prob, I'll just grab taunt and let him heal. Draxxe does just that and a timely root on the scribe prevents him from running for friends. Down he goes, and very soon after his little buddy is the same. Loot the Journal, and lessor succor out of there! Port to Surefall and run and hand in the parts and get the sword!!! Woot!! I am one happy warrior.

(Note: The journal was called "Journal of Greater Enchantments".....I should have turned on log. I will next time. Why again? Read below.)

So eager to go lay waste to every gnoll I can find in BB I run on over. Now not sure where I have put the sword because the inventory graphic is the same as my Centi LS, just before I zone into BB I decide to check. Right click on the secondary slot. But I fat-fingered the click and made a quick right click. Poof!! I have a puppy....Oh crap, there goes a charge. From elation to despair in a flash. I am bummed until it's pointed out to me by my buddy Draxxe "Hey, we will just go get another one!!" Good point I say. But now I have a pet.

So off to run around Qeynos Hills to amaze all the lower lvls that a warrior has a pet. Killed the Miller's and that fishing dude. Even took out the wandering Monk (punk). I will deal with the faction later. I sent the puppy in to kill all the gnolls near the entrance to BB to at least raise the Qeynos Guards back up. Since it's a normal pet it follow the /pet commands and would many times bite for 30pts. He con'd lt blue to me (again I am at lvl 37). As well since he is a normal style pet he will take on buffs. I think I might use the last charge in an upcoming ToFS raid. BTW, you don't need to keep the weapon equipped after summoning the pet.

So after a while of this I am again eager to see how the sword works on gnolls. So pet the puppy goodbye and into BB I go. Well what can I say other than WOW!! Gnolls here were now like butter. This and my CLS made it unfair even beyond the fact that they were all green. In fact a new personal 1 hand slash crit of 138 was obtained (actually best crit I've had period)!! Next test is to see how it performs in paw where the mobs are more my lvl.

So why bother with this sword? Well the fun of completing a quest, the fact that I am at a good lvl for paw right now, and the gnolls on Iceclad are waiting for me as well.

And the moral of the story? Beware of the right click on this when equipped and carry a good druid when in PAW.

Wurmslayer vs Gnollslayer
# Jul 22 2002 at 6:57 PM Rating: Decent
Unlike the wurmslayer, this weapon will go in offhand also, so with a good/fast dmg/dly weapon in main hand, this thing kicks a$$ against gnolls, in and around splitpaw, say what you want but i think its worth doing the quest. And, oh, If this procs at 30, and Companion Spirit is a 34 shaman pet spell then it is WELL worth it.
Gnoll Slayer is just that.
# Jul 17 2002 at 12:19 PM Rating: Decent
This is obviously one of those really situational weapons. Against Gnolls this is a badass weapon; but otherwise it just really isn't worth having. And since there aren't really many places to hunt Gnolls after Splitpaw has greened out it won't see much use. Unless, of course, one of the new Planes in Planes of Power is inhabited by Gnolls (*shrug* Terris-Thule's plane is a forest). It could happen. Although I would imagine at that level the Bane Damage won't matter all that much. Just my 2CP. This isn't worth questing for.
RE: Gnoll Slayer is just that.
# Oct 06 2002 at 1:46 AM Rating: Default
With this in secondary, and a green jade broadsword in main, I hit gnolls in jagged for triple digits constantly. No use for the weapon after jagged greens out...so?

Maybe if everyone was supposed to have a pet they'd have them. If every Warrior or Pally could have unlimited pets, what would be the point of being a Beastlord or a Shadowknight?

Because it is no drop and only has 2 charges, it is keeping every high level player on your server from camping in your xp zone. Don't believe me?

Personally, I like the idea of this sword. I think Paw is a great area for excitting play. My guild & I have spent several weeks now exploring all the inner depths of this place. The real nice thing is on my server is that its not a popular zone, well... at least past the double doors, so plenty of camps to pick from. I look forward to getting this sword & coming back to smack some gnolls around.

Also think about RE for a bit. BA coif & BABS and lots of other high powered items are almost always being farmed by high lvls, taking away from the intended lvls to be hunting the area. Many times I tried to hunt RE for exp & loot, but high lvls where running round gettin all the good drops.

Anywho,

Where to find the MOBs.

Alright I was stuck a little while with this but I went around destroying every MOB in the area until I found, and then I felt stupid because it was so easy.

Lord Elgnub information is correct, he spawns in the spike room in Blackburrow after you have kept all commanders, splitpaw gnolls, and elite guards in the zone killed. Then with the gnoll high shaman pops in the green room, kill that too.

The two spawns in Splitpaw from the entrance are as follows, you will need invis and/or levitate to get out.

One Eye Gnoll: Come from the entrance, go down the hall to the double doors, through the single door and on the bridge where you can jump down, do so (you'll take roughly 60 to 30dmg) then proceed through the door that you can see from there. You are now looking at a campfire and either a Tesch Gnoll or the one eye. This is where to pick up the gnoll eye.

From there go to Scribe spawn...

Gnoll Scribe: Go out the door you just entered, do not go up that ramp next to the fire because this just leads to deeper into zone. Out of the door you just entered, turn left and at the next intersection you can open a left door or go right. Proceed right, and do not go up the stairsin the next room. There is a room on the opposite back left corner of hte room you just entered with the scribe and a lleth val gnoll or two lleth val gnolls. The Scribe will spawn as the left MOB. Try to root or snare it as you do have 4 MOBs back to the one eye gnoll spawn that you might not want to bother with.

As for charges, a level 51 Paladin is able to use them. ;p Good luck with this everyone, it's been two long years of wanting to do this, and I've finally finished it. And damn was it easy. Ha!

Ok I appreciate your input Limecherry, it's been the only insightful information on this weapon thusfar. However, I can say that your directions confused me quite a bit. There isnt a ramp in the pit area tht I'm aware of, so I decided to try around the stairs on that level. there is a ramp next to the campfire with the 1 eye gnoll; however, after that it's onto the Ishva Mal and the widemouth falls, and tons of other gnolls. Please reply and give a loc to his spawn, or at least step by step from the campfire as I am ready to put this thing up (I seem to have a problem leaving quests unfinished lol)

Thanks,

I went into the lair of splitpaw with me a 45 lvl ranger and a 35 lvl ranger we went through where thhe nish vas gnoll is before the bridge then we went directly off of the side of the bridge. we found the nish val scribe took him out then we went for the one eyed gnoll he put up more of a fight the 35 lvl ranger already had the gnoll slayer fiinal and was looking for his second one he had already been using thee pets to help us. we took out both twice his pet got charmed because of the low lvl so we just took it out then we got out of there and headed to black burrow I got my baby sayer the first night lord elgnub hit me for 211points of damage the first hit but after that I just slaughterd him.the next night the 35 lvl ranger went to kill lord elgnub he took down almost everything on track no lord so he went out to marton sayer and talked to him went back to black burrow took out all of the eliets and about 10 mins after that lord elgnub spawned i donnt know if that was exactly how he spawns or weather you just have to kill all of the eleits but this is how i saw this happen.

How could he be looking for a second gnoll slayer? It's Lore you can only have one.

He's getting the second one because of the Summon companion. I've personaly got the baby Joseph and the One-eye drop a second Gnoll slayer. *just need the enchanted piece from the scribe*. Why? mainly for when I need to use a pet for something important like my epic. Once i've used up my pets, Delete the sword, I'll go get the second one and have another 2 charges for those difficult raids where every person counts.

The centi and all those other non-earned 1hs are great, but i have a ranger I have been playing and have been using only the stuff I loot, make, or come across on a non-looted mob. Maybe I am a fool, but getting this weapon myself as opposed to using something I didn't earn would mean more to me. - Hummus The Ranger Lvl 15 -
