I was in FV today visiting my friend Shrub Marwood when scanning through his wares I came upon a Drolvarg Mantle. Shrub's selling price? A hansome 2pp and change. Needless to say I scooped it up for my budding monk and went on about my business.
this is not as good as the bloodstained mantle
# Mar 15 2002 at 4:37 PM Rating: Decent
The bloodstained Mantle has a bit better stats than this. Unless you are a monk.
Almost trash

This must be an always drop of pretty close to it, I camped the room with some friends off and on for 2 days, and everytime the captain popped, he dropped this evertime and nothing else. I guess rare really mean rare. Still waiting on my Lupine Dagger. heh

The TRUE AC of +AGI items
# Sep 05 2001 at 5:48 PM Rating: Decent
I have the Drolvarg Mantle on my level 30 SK at the moment, and I must say that it’s worth more than the 7 AC.

Nearly everyone knows that AGI = AC, and shouldn’t be discounted when considering purchasing an item. It seems to me that items with +AGI, usually something higher than 2, actually has a higher total AC than other pieces of armor. When you consider that this hot little number has + 6 AGI, you must realize that the total AC is MUCH higher than the 7 AC on paper. In fact, this mantle actually provides me with 15AC!! (I have taken the item off time and time again to verify that my eyes were not deceiving me.) I foolishly purchased a Fine Plate Pauldron thinking that it would give me a minor AC boost. Well, to my dismay, this item provided a paltry 13 AC. (The “paper” AC is 10, but there is always an AC increase depending upon certain variables) Well, I sold my Fine Plate Pauldron and continue to wear my little mantle with pride.

Another cool thing is the SvF bonus. If you want to equip a couple pieces of Coterie armor (if you're a druid or rogue, for instance), you can offset the SvF penalties with this mantle while keeping good AC.

I'm a firm believer that what high-levels ditch at vendors as "crap" can be pretty worthwhile for low- to mid-levels if you balance out penalties and use items that dock stats you don't care about.

Ulthork Hide armor, Coterie armor, Validus Custodus plate, and Giant Scalemail are cheap and generally easy to attain. A few choice pieces of stat/resist jewelry and you're in business.

Actually, the way AC is displayed on your character info panel is screwy and a bit deceptive. There's actually two different kinds of AC: damage mitagation AC (which determines how much damage take when you get it... it's possible to mitigate damage down to 0, in which case they show up as misses), and damage avoidance AC (this is what agility affects... it helps determine whether or not you get hit, along with damage avoidance skills like Dodge, Riposte and Parry).

Generally, the AC boost your get from AGI, isn't worth as much as the AC you get from straight AC boosting items/spells. Also...

There is a "threshhold" for how much your AGI affects your displayed AC. If you have AGI under 75, you take an AC penalty. I think that may be why you see a 15 point AC difference from just 6 points of agility.

Personally, I'd rather go with straight AC, HP, or resist buffing items (the +5 SVF on this is decent) than AGI boosting ones. Engraved Bone Pauldrons and Crested Spaulders are two nice shoulder items that one might want to pick over this particular piece.

drolvarg mantles are practiacally free in some places too! kinda sad tho... people spend so much time and effort to work on their trade skills and they recieve little reward... however i do take great pride when i can fix a steak outa any beast in Norrath lol and being able to make bandaids in the wild is a very good survival technique! well enough of my chatting =P

i personally cant wait till the day when i proudly hold up that steelskin cap and /shout "w00t w00t.... w00t w00t....w00t w00t!!!!!!!!! I L337 I R0X0R T/-\Ilor d00d!!!"

so what would be a decent price to ask for one??
horribly common
# Aug 07 2001 at 3:55 AM Rating: Decent
My first day in Karnor's castle this stupid mantle dropped every time off of the captian. apparently the drolvarg captian drops other stuf that is better, but this sucker dropped every time, we had 5 drops in less than 2 hours of fighting. better than nothing anyway.
Better than nothing?
# Dec 07 2001 at 9:39 AM Rating: Default
LOL. On my server (Zeb) these routinely sell for 75-100pp. So take your 5 "horribly common" drops to EC, and make 450-500pp. In 2 hours? Not to mention Im sure you picked up other loot along the way. So I guess you are right, it IS better than nothing.

I ran across one of these at a merchant when I was way new to the game, and bought for under 10 plat. Was this just some sort of fluke? I've still got it, but am using Adamantite epaulets now, as I am a cleric and Wis is more important than Agi and sv fire. I've yet to see another magic item thats any good priced so low!

No, it is not you. There are many items that merchants sell for far more than a player would consider spending (Fine Steel anyone?). This sells from a merchant for 2-3pp. A player will ask 75-100p. A similar thing is an Archeologist pack (weight reducing bag), merchants sell for 2p, players sell for several hundred. Helm of Rile sells player to player for about 100-300p, merchants ask 10,000p.

It seems to be just one of those weird pricing flukes but by Brell's Beard I am a happy Dwarf! Just the other day I happened to find one of these babies being sold by an NPC vendor in South Kaladim (in the leather armor store across from Irontoe's Eats) for less than 2 and a half platinum. WOOT!

I don't know why people keep reducing my rating for the above post, it's perfectly true...if you don't believe it come and inspect me on Ayonae Ro sometime, hehe...I'm level 30 now and still have this item equipped...

Y'all are just jealous! ;)

Why can't some races wear this?!
# Jun 05 2001 at 4:43 PM Rating: Default
It's not all forms of elves that cannot wear it. Dark elves can wear it. So that would rule that out. It seems that for some reason High Elves, Wood Elves, and Half Elves have been left of the list, even though there are races or large, medium, and small on the list and even a member of the elven race. Why would they not allow the other three elven races to wear it??

Doesn't make any sense.

I was just thinking the same thing actually. Moreover, the item doesn't really have a theme or anything, like an item bearing a particular race's name, or god... or anything. It's just a drolvarg mantle, dropped from a drolvarg...

<--- me thinks Verant drew wearable races out of a hat for an item they knew anyone hunting in this zone wouldn't care about anyway.

On Tunare we calls it vendor-bait.
this or exe ?
# Jun 01 2001 at 7:54 AM Rating: Default
Would anyone reccomend this over an executioners hood for a monk? The agi buff is nice, but now with the addition of the wu's fighting armor, is it really needed ?
RE: this or exe ?
# Apr 28 2002 at 4:27 PM Rating: Decent
Why not both? The Exe goes in the head slot and this Mantle goes in the shoulder slot....
#Anonymous, Posted: May 08 2001 at 10:29 AM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) i'm happy with my bloodstained mantle and this drops off a lvl 48 mob? lol give me a break after defeating a lvl 48 mob this item should be +15 to fire or better and agil 15+ or better wtf is agil 6 and fire 5???? and an AC of 7?? what a piece of ****

it's not too bad for monks, anything better requires alot of effort to get, usually people give these away or sell them at a pretty low price
RE: item sucks
# May 12 2001 at 1:06 PM Rating: Decent
If you look at it, it seems very likely it was made for Druids, who can't wear BS mantles
RE: item sucks
# Jun 23 2002 at 11:00 PM Rating: Decent
if the item was made for druids why cant wood elfs and half elfs (the two most common classes) wear it?

It's a nice upgrade to the Lizardscale Mantle. the AGI is always appreciated on a slow heavy warrior.
