Berserkers can use these now, thus greatly increasing the usefulness of this staff.
something to note
# Oct 02 2002 at 4:33 AM Rating: Decent
Its recommended lvl is actually its required lvl. You wont get the stats on red because u wont get any stats below 51 cause u cant equipt it (I know ive tried). Maybe its a bug I dunno. I know I wish verant would make it so you can tell whats truely recommended and whats truely required. Sux to pay money forsomething and not be able to use it even though everything on the weapon said you could. AS far as meleeing goes, I play a chanter and since I'm stunning and such, why not. When I don't have C3,granted, I do sit on my *** and regain my mana but then im a crack ***** and I'm never in that situation so its irrelevant. Chanters got werewolf, aug, DS, and rune so I'm gonna say they might be able to take a necro ;P. Of course, I'm also biased but what can you expect. On another note, both necros and chanters are gonna waste those lil mages and wizzies in melee Muwahahaha >:p

Edit: stats are wrong, it weighs 5.0 or atleast mine does tehehe

Another Edit: When stats get un red (at high 30's low 40's) it says required lvl 51. (dam) =D

A buddy of mine saw one of these in the bazaar going cheap (1.5k) and bought it for me thinking I could use it since it had a "recommended level" tag. I hit the same problem, it wouldn't equip even though everything on it said I could.

It was a bug and I reported it a couple times because I was very pissed that it wouldn't equip on my mage.

As of one of the most recent patches they have fixed this to say "required level" of 51.

The weight is indeed 5.0
Casters Meleeing?
# Aug 25 2002 at 1:25 PM Rating: Decent
No caster who could actually equip this item (level 51 or better) would be stupid or naive enough about EQ that they would think they could melee worth a damn. All of the posts in this thread claiming ENC and such are somehow anything but pathetic at melee combat are nonsense.

Meleeing for casters is a LAST RESORT. Sure, 32/32 is a phenomenal ratio. But it still won't make a casters melee output worthwhile enough that they should stand around swinging this instead of sitting their butt down and medding up between casts.

Casters weapon skills cap very low and they have low STR - therefore they have low ATK. Casters can't dual wield. Casters can't double attack.

Any caster, particularly one who is level 51 or better, who thinks they can do MORE damage meleeing than using their spells needs to pull their head (and their spell book) out of their rear end and think about making a melee class character if they want to fight that way.

hmm.... after i sos myself, and selfbuff my strength to 185.. and get tired of sitting around at fm constantly, i occasionally have been known to hit something a couple times.

course i'm just a weak chanter...

Yes in a group, casters shouldn't melee much if at all in most situations.

But not all casters require a group. Necros and mages don't need groups to get good experience. That being said, when we solo we let the pets and spells do most of the damage. But there is always that point with most mobs when it turns to run. That my friend is when we melee a lot.

Matter of fact, if a necro is fear kiting solo, I can see him/her meleeing quite a bit all the time, especially since they can heal themselves quite easily with lifetap spells.

Mages get this nifty little line of self regen spells. This allows me to time it so that I will run up and take about 2 bubbles of damage before they start to run, which after the fight by the time my mana is up to a good level to go again, my hp are full well before then.

Now, combine this staff with the Tolapumj's Robe's fat level of Haste I'm wearing and I'm quite the meleeing mage.

That's right, Tarquelian Tank Mage at your service...

Its not that I think i can do more melee dmg with this staff than with my spells (wizard), but at high lvls I find it quite amusing to beg a sos from the chanter in my group (or any other haste spell, but sos is manafree so...) and get off my but an melee a bit. I want to max out all my melee skills and for that, this staff is wonderfull. And its fun! Of course, I only do it in times when I have enough mana and the group is going well. And the more dmg the bette! I mean..ever point count..doesnt it? To use for stats? No way.

I couldn't agree more. Any caster worth his or her salt won't bother with melee when spells and mana can be used. Nor will they bother with a 2HB weapon like this when they can use 2 items with great stats instead (great as in roughly twice the benefit of using this plus resists in my case). Casters in melee = novelty and a bit of fun (which is good) but lets not delude ourselves into thinking we can handle mobs that con blue to us with melee when over level 51.

Personally I think a high level necro would whip all other pure casters in melee due to the ATK, STA, STR, AC buffs necros have together with proc'ing drains (vampiric embrace), damage shields (banshee aura) and added little extras like grim aura designed to make low level necros melee better. But then i'm biased and ever conscious of my right to express what is only an opinion ;P

Nothing changes the fact that this is a nice item - personally i'd hardly ever use it but it would sometimes be a laugh.

I am an enchanter and I melee. Now that that is over with, I will tell you why. Or more importantly when. Enchanters have an amazing spell line that fast casts stuns, just like a cleric does but(sadly)without damage or the horrendous re-cast time. But enchanters have to be in point blank area to make that work; read melee range. Why shouldn't I be swinging since I am already close enough to hit and be hit? This weapon would swing decent damage while I am stun locking that Necromancer/Wizard/Druid from eating the cleric's mana like candy? Or the Coterie Vampire that procs like a fiend on the warrior I can't talk out of tanking it. I debuff and DoT the victim to open and inbetween stuns, but running C2 or C3 means I am getting most of my mana back while fighting. Why shouldn't I take advantage of a little more damage? When the stuns aren't necessary, I sit on my backside like a good little caster and wait for when they are. I sometimes carry procing weapons to make the damage values go up to be more useful, but swinging occasional 60's with this would be just as much fun as a proc or two in combat. I have done 1100 damage in a long fight against a Goranga caster in ME with Procs and all, and he was quite red to me. The Cleric even jumped up to have some fun because it couldn't do anything and she was at FM. So, as the only pure caster class that cannot Nuke/DoT for incredible damage, but CAN cheaply stun lock a victim forever to save mana on heals, why NOT?

I too am an enchanter, and I too melee sometimes. People forget that enc nukes have a rediculous recast time, and quite often I don't really want to clog up my spell slots with 2 nukes. I hardly ever struggle for mana in xp groups, as is probably be the same with any enchanter, and meleeing can sometimes be an easy 400+ extra damage on a mob during the fight, that would otherwise be time spent doing nothing.

It all helps !

I am an iksar necro level 41 and am unable to equip this weapon. Does anyone know why I get the 'This item is not equipable by your race, class, deity'. There is no mention of it being deity specific. I would be grateful for any input on this point.

I thought that rec level ment that you don't get the full effect(or dmg) from the item, when i been looking at this staff in the bazaar as a level 26 it says 16(32)/32, to me that means the weapon would be a 16/32 dmg but then again i'm probably way off :)

you said

"First of all Kiddies, Enchanters are excellent melee duelers. We can stack two types of Wereform on ourselves, boosting our AR and Dex through the roof, on top of Haste, Berserker Strength Type spells, an AC buff and major Debuffs to weaken opponent AC our Chain Stun and MR Lowering ability only complement the ability to Fear, root, blind or make someone spin. So dont be fooled when the Enchanter challenges you to a melee only duel and then proceeds to school you in the art of *** kicking"

now, how is debuffing, chain stunning, lowering MR, rooting, fearing, blinding and making someone spin a melee duel?

i have to admit, i dont play a melee char, but i didnt know they could do all this stuff, theones i group with just mash that taunt key, if I'm lucky, lol

RE: Monks
# Sep 06 2002 at 6:08 AM Rating: Default
God shut up about monks, its not a shame they can't use this and they shouldn't be able to, its killer ratio and stats are meant to enable casters to melee a bit. See its caster only? Thats why its not that great.

Have you ever stopped to wonder why they make weapons with incredible ratios and make them caster only? Or robes with 50 AC? Its because verant apparently thinks they need to lend casters a hand at tanking...my rogue can't take hits, so why don't they lend him a hand with that? Give him a 60 AC breastplate!

My point is verant set out to make CLASSES, not characters that can do anything. Casters can't melee and shouldn't generally. Next thing you know they will give SKs a sword with effect: duel wield.
two staffs
# Apr 28 2002 at 1:25 AM Rating: Default
I have a Staff of Primordial Summoning. It was given to me by a friend who got tired of playing eq and quit. The stats I got are Dam 7(32) Del 39 HP +8 Mana +9 Dex +2 Wis +2 Int +2 Agi +2. It is equipable by all the same as the one shown here. It doesn't say anything about any extra damage; however, it does say Recommended Level 51. I'm only level 12, is this why I'm getting different stats? Also, I sold it to a level 24 Wizard (what is the price on these by the way, I can't find it anywhere) and he said he couldn't equip it- he got a message that said "This item is not equipable by your race, class, deity," or something like that. Is this an evil staff? Please post on this. I looked like an idiot selling this guy a staff that I don't know anything about. I of course bought it back from him, because I am a good businessman and always look out for the future.

Chanter Melee
# Apr 26 2002 at 12:18 AM Rating: Decent
Saying Enchanters can melee is like saying they can nuke. Sure they can, but it is a joke when you consider those classes whose main function are those skills. There are very few grouping situations where chanter melee even makes a little since and most of those are when the Enchanter canít do anything else (like mobs that are 100% immune to all their spells). Even then, it is a joke and just something to cure boredom.

That being said, I am a huge supporter of enchanter melee. I have this staff and a lot of other equipment to augment it (fbss, goblin earring, etc.). Even if it is still a joke, many would be amazed what an enchanter can put out. Especially with a weapon like this. It makes perfect since for the following situations.

1. Traveling Ė I wear all my melee gear when traveling. It is nice to be able to kill a pesky green as easily as a true melee. Defiantly nice at those times when you have no spells memed to help you out.
2. Farming Ė I do tradeskills and most creators I need are way green. With a summoned pet, I can go none stop without using any mana.
3. Dueling Ė The only way you will ever beat another enchanter. It is also nice to drain other casters and then humiliate them by finishing them off with a weapon.

Ohh, and when I say ďgreensĒ I donít just mean Skeletons and low stuff like that. Using a pet and slow (and buffs of course), I can take out Sea furies and Giants. Not as productive as just using spells, mind you, but can still be done.
RE: Chanter Melee

Chanters can do many things. Not as well as a specialist, of course. Goin to buy one right now, it's nice swap item from my chetari wardstaff.
"You using a 2hb?!?!" Yes... yes I am.
RE: Chanter Melee
# May 29 2002 at 11:17 PM Rating: Decent
I am a chanter that has this staff, and as far as chanters should only melee when mobs are 100% immune to our spells I say baahhhh! Self buffed I have hit for 124 with this staff and with shammy buffs I got up to 130 so far, and these are not your green mobs this is mobs from OS, HS, chardok, CT, and more. I can add 1k dam and more melee without the aggro that my dementia spell causes. I take down giants solo without a pet with just slow, beserkers spirit, and melee. So to your archaic "sit in the back and hit philosophy" I say live a little. Its a game after all have fun and do what you want.
RE: Chanter Melee
# Jun 23 2002 at 3:30 AM Rating: Decent
Itís good for immune mobs that you cant damage any other way. An example is one of the Golems in Fear. Enchanters canít do anything to it directly. With this staff, I had a max hit of 148. Over the entire fight, I did over 2k damage to it. That is great and all, but I would have done more if I was able to nuke it.

Iím not knocking it. This staff is one of my most valuable possessions. Its just that you wonít get to use it like that 90% of the time because you will be focused on other things.
RE: Chanter Melee
# May 22 2002 at 9:14 AM Rating: Decent
There are those occasions when a Mob is so low that you can't see thier life any more, and suddenly you are out of mana with a dead tank.

RE: Enchanter Melee Duelist
# Aug 25 2002 at 1:45 PM Rating: Good
If you used all of those stuns, fears, roots, blinds and so forth it would hardly be a "melee only duel".

And besides that, I don't care how many werewolf forms you stack on yourself, you will get your *** kicked in a duel with a melee if you don't use any offensive spells. You don't have enough hitpoints, AC, or ATK to withstand head to head melee combat. Your ATK will be too low vs. the melee's AC, your damage output too low vs. their hitpoints.

This is why you have spells. This is also why, when describing what in your mind was a "melee only duel" you had to list about a half dozen different spells you were going to cast because any other strategy where you would win the fight isn't plausible or even thinkable.

Can an ENC melee? Yes, but not very well. They can try - and probably lose unless its against the weakest of opponents. But just because something CAN be done, that doesn't mean it is to BE done.

# Mar 15 2002 at 1:40 PM Rating: Default
Actually, this is not that bad a weapon. 32/32 is a very nice ratio. Sure, casters don't melee much, but there's always those that wish to do so anyways.

# Mar 15 2002 at 10:30 AM Rating: Default
What caster of the level you need to be to survive in the new Cazic would not simply let this thing rot? Why does Verant insist on putting tripe like this in the game? You can't sell it or give it to a twink, and nobody with the experience to get it is going to USE it. And this is the NORM for caster gear these days. There are better ONE hand items for casters already, plus the ability to get MORE stats on a secondary item when using one of them. Among the few items for casters in Luclin, many are similarly crippled.

Go back to adding more melee gear VI. Wake the casters up when you're ready to add some real one-hand items for them instead of Tinkertoys.

There are many times everyone in the group is meleeing. The most popular place that comes to mind if the Frenzy camp in Velks. If the main tank is high enough to keep the agro, I haste the cleric and myself to help kill them spiders at an unbelievable pace. The exp is the best in the game save AOE. I would love this item for those instances.

Will not have Damage bonus
# Mar 14 2002 at 5:03 PM Rating: Good
The reason this shows a damage bonus (Which Casters do not get) is because the screenshot was taken by a melee inspecting the corpse. The 30 damage bonus is due partly due to the melee's level and partly due to the delay of the weapon. Nevertheless, anyone able to wield this staff will not get a damage bonus with it, since damage bonus is only for the fighting types ;)
