The item is intended to be a 'major' grind. Its original intent was to give the players that finish their AAs in the first week of an expansion something to work on after they're done maxing out achievements, quests, etc.

The reason that I chose to grant a defense skill bonus is because only one % skill mod can be included on an item so I had to try and pick an effect that would benefit the most people at once and at the same time not be a skill that was used anywhere else in the game. The idea is that, while the power gain from this item is 'low', it's unique and isn't something that can be gained anywhere else. I can't make any promises, but I'll look into adding some bonus to casters to the item so it's not entirely melee centric.

As to the fact that the item grants 5%, I just picked some random number with the intent that the capped gains would only be 10 skill points. 5% seemed like a safe bet due to the variance in actual defense skill based on your class.

As to the process of leveling evolving items:
Each evolving item has a defined number of exp points you need to obtain in order to level the item from one rank to the next. The tear has some of the highest exp requirements and is also very restrictive based on mob races (only Alarans and Alaran Ghosts work.)

Here are the raw numbers for you math inclined people. Keep in mind that these are the 'lowered' values, the intense grind is intended.

To make some sense of those numbers here is a chart that defines how much 'item exp' you gain per kill. (Basically, the amount of 'item exp' you gain per kill is based on your group size and the mob's level compared to yours.)

The reward for doing the optional step in the Pillars tasks grants a defined number of exp points to the item based on the item's level. It works as follows:
Level 01: 450 points.
Level 02: 710 points.
Level 03: 1120 points.
Level 04: 1767 points.
Level 05: 2788 points.
Level 06: 4397 points.
Level 07: 6937 points.
Levels 08-13: 7000 points.
Levels 14-20: 10000 points.

After working on this item for a week or so, I've figured out a good system to evolve it. Using 2 different characters you can complete the 4 group tasks from the factions continuously without having to faction afterwards. Those tasks being The Word of Fal'Kaa, The Word of Melretia, The Word of Anriella and The Word of Erion. By completing the bonus portion of each task you earn a Fragment of Alaran History clickable evolution item. Level 1 earns 10% per click, Level 2-4 earns 20% per click, Level 5-7 earns 15% per click, Level 8-9 earns 10% per click and Level 10+ earns 5% per click. I used a lvl 100 Ranger (Max AA) and a lvl 100 Monk (7k AA) and a cleric merc for the missions. You must complete "The First Pilgrimage" on each character in order to request these tasks.

I'm able to complete all 4 tasks in 2hours or less after completing the missions a few times. Starting from a level 1 Tear, you're looking at roughly 120hrs with this method to reach level 20. Completing 4 tasks everyday = 2 months for completion. Completing 4 tasks twice a day = 1 month for completion. You can task add friends or guildies outside of the zone to earn a fragment on Fal'Kaa, Melretia and Anriella. Erion requires them to be in the zone.

On one character (I used Monk) complete The Word of Fal'Kaa and The Word of Melretia. These factions are aligned with another.
--The Word of Fal'Kaa bonus is achieved by exiting the tower of Light without holding agro for more than a couple seconds. To be successful on this bonus requires a character that can utilize a harmony type spell to reduce agro radius so you can successfully be "stealthy" exiting the tower of Light or the ability to FD/fade immediately if you obtain agro. Another helpful tool for avoiding agro are blink abilities. If your latency is around 150+ms, lag can cause you to fail this part by holding agro too long due to a delayed reaction. Your other option is to clear the Light tower mobs that will cause agro issues on your way back in and out.
--The Word of Melretia bonus is achieved by completing the mission within 30mins. To be successful on this bonus requires DPS and the ability to tank multiple mobs. The scroll used to spread the word to mobs has a PBAE radius, so be careful of mob proximity (including walls). Also note that the earth elemental models share agro with the alaran models they're next to. Furthermore note that you cannot FD or fade agro from mobs you've angered with your heresy. They will immediately re-agro until you evac, die or you kill them. If they receive the "(Waivering Faith)" tag above their name you can lose agro safely.

On the other character (I used Ranger) complete The Word of Anriella and The Word of Erion. These factions are aligned with another.
-- The Word of Anriella bonus is achieved by allowing the Arcane Guardian to FD you 3 times prior to killing it. To be successful on this bonus requires nothing other than waiting for the random FD to go off. Be prepared for respawns.
-- The Word of Erion bonus is achieved by defeating one "Fal`Kaa`s Shadowward" at the very top of the Fal'Kaa tower. This mob is the same difficulty as a named mob in Pillars.

Once you get your "The Tears of Alaris," you must ZONE once before the convert button will show up.
This new button is in the Item Inspect window. I have uploaded Both of the new SS's of the black and blue versions of this that show the Button. Hope this helps!

I looked up the patch note and all I found was that it could be right clicked to turn it in to an augmentation, I saw nothing on what the augment would be when clicked. I ASSUME it would be the same stats, but it would become a slot 3 augment. Can anyone confirm this ??? I'm level 14 now and can see if i applied my soloing time here it could be advanced but it will still take a lot of effort.It would be nice to know for sure what you get upon completion.

has anyone actually got to the aug part of this god awful thing ? i calculated through lev 13 on this was 100 mobs per 1% to level up - i can honestly say i am not looking forward to the last 6 levels on evolving this thing !!!! has to be the most evil thing that SoE ever dreamt up in the whole game to evolve it

Adjusted the amount of experience required for the Tears of Alaris evolving item to reach level 20. The amount of experience required to reach level 20 is about what it previously took to reach level 16. At level 20 you can now right click the item to transform it into an augmentation.
