Classes: The Shaman

Shamen - primitive power. The only magic using class of the barbarians, ogres and trolls, shamen get a variety of spells that combine aspects of most of the other magic using classes. This combination, along with the racial strength, means the class can be played in a variety of different ways.

What is the best way to develop and play your shaman? What spells and skills are the most and least useful? Can a shaman be soloed, and if so how? How should you play your shaman in a group?

Post your strategies on how to best play and develop the Shaman and read, rate and comment on what others have to say.

When they come out with new recipes look for them on Eqtrader is the best way once they are found and yes Real peeps have to buy new ingredents and try different combinations and find what works using very little info from new books or pages in the the game and only if they are generious will they share that info with us all. It will take time.

Best info so far is on EQ Traders as Larth said. I have found in-game books to be delightful examples of creative writing but little else. I haven't even bothered buying the books available in POK.

For what it's worth it looks to me like Alchemy has gotten an upgrade. What used to be called potions are now far more varied and versatile. For quick reference, and since I'm on the subject :-) , I'll provide links copied without permission from EQ Traders;

Distillates are the alchemy potions that have effects like curing disease or poison, or regeneration

Elixirs and Effusions
are statistic buffs like those that can be cast with spells. Elixirs improve your performance stats (strength, wisdom, charisma, etc) while effusions improve your resists.

Philters, Mists and Essences are the miscellaneous potions, those that have various effects which don't come in a patterened order of strengths. Philters and mists have the effects most familiar from alchemy before the Prophecy of Ro revamp, like see invisibility, teleport, and the all important sow (spirit of the wolf). Philters only affect the drinker, while mists affect the drinker's whole group that is in range. Essences are the same illusions we knew before the revamp, with the same names even. The recipes have just changed a bit.

Suspensions are the thrown alchemy potions. These have damaging effects like snare (YAY!), blindness, or damage over time.

Tonics are Potions with focus effects. These can either reduce the mana it takes to cast a particular type of spell or increase the duration of the spell once cast, just like the focus effects found on gear.

I hope that helps. I found some of the vials on the Alchemy vendors in POK. My Foldable Bearskin Medicine bag has been renamed and since potions now stack I guess it's just another medicine bag. Oh well, at least new Heyokahs won't have to slay hundreds of bears to get a Grizzly skin as I did.

It looks like we will be able to make some really useful stuff, if only for our alts and friends. As far as finally being able to make some plat off Alchemy? Ya think? ...... Nahhh. On a personal note they lowered the trivial on Gate potions and cut the price of Heliotrope by more than half. I can now make them and won't be murdering my rogue anymore to get him back to POK. It might also be kind of cool to lay one on a group member when we wind up far from home. We'll see what develops.

I have always made money off alchemy. It takes longer now to make less money now, but I am still making money.

The big difference is, I am more or less breaking even on skilling up past 250, where there were times in the past, I dropped 50K on a few skillups (before the PoK potions), and it took a long time to catch up making gates and other potions.

But it's a LOT harder to make some potions because of all the rare dropped ingredients. My ranger spent 30 minutes foraging to get 5 Nodding Blue Lilies (just to see how easy they were to get). Exceptional shissar blood and shards of ro would make certain potions too expensive time or plat wise to make a profit on.

Over the long haul, for me, alchemy has been profitable. Then again bazaaring, and potioning, I find as fun as the rest of the game so I spend time that others would not want to spend.

Another great site for alchemy potion making in the new form is hosted on The Spirit Realm (Great all around site for Shaman and others as well, check out the forums).

Best spot for farming for post 250 skilling is Sirens Grotto for the Deepwater Inks. Common drop from the sea horses, swordfish, etc there. Best part of this is there is also the chance of Felspine spawning and dropping a haste belt that sells real easy in Bazaar, and Crushed Diamonds as well from other mobs. I can actually say that overall from 0 to 300 more than paid for itself in alchemy, spent maybe 50k total, made 100k+ from all the gems, potions, drops etc. Granted, most of the return came after I was near 250 and higher, but still very satisfying.
