Classes: The Shaman

Shamen - primitive power. The only magic using class of the barbarians, ogres and trolls, shamen get a variety of spells that combine aspects of most of the other magic using classes. This combination, along with the racial strength, means the class can be played in a variety of different ways.

What is the best way to develop and play your shaman? What spells and skills are the most and least useful? Can a shaman be soloed, and if so how? How should you play your shaman in a group?

Post your strategies on how to best play and develop the Shaman and read, rate and comment on what others have to say.

Ok I really dont feel like digging through the forums to find about soloing but how does a shaman solo with gear thats well, not so hot? Ive tried broodlands, PoJ, and PoN but I must be really bad at soloing cuase I cant even kill 2 mobs before I die. My tactic is slow, sic pet, DoT, DoT, back up and heal pet. Anything im doing wrong or I could do better? Thanks in advance!

Root rotting is the least gear dependent method we have to solo. It's slow, it's boring, and it will cause your weapon and defense skills to stop improving but it works.

You want to cast your best DoTs on your enemy then root him in place. Once he is rooted then you just canni/heal until root breaks or the DoTs wear off and do it again.

It gets easier once you get higher level and your DoT spells stop breaking root as much but it is doable at any level.

Hoping you have Stoicism? If not, get it.

Idea 1 - lead with Malo(whatever). resists are the number one cause of death and fido can outaggro malo a lot easier than slow.

Idea 2 - grab any sk/war/ranger/etc from the lfg tool and duo instead of soloing - our pet is not a great tank. I've had more sucess standing around chain canni/HoTing myself while dogdog chewed the mob's rump than letting him try to tank.

It gets a little easier to solo once u hit 61.At 61 u get the"True Spirit"pet it is lvl58 war class.Get the pet mage summoned hand of xibet x 2/muzzle/belt+conv/focus + other shm buffs n it can tank quite well.In addition if u cast spirit of puma Proc(sold in pok) or spirit of jaguar(attained with don crystals) it will hold argo well while u dot the mob. Also this pet will proc noraml player weapons-I once gave mine Barnicle covered axe-(proc inc hate + 50hpdmg)+ Woe(affliction dot proc)
n they proc'd every fight.Best method I have found is pull with Slow(tugur's)n sic pet will mob running at u-if pet has proc spell or wep it will pull argo off u,then when mob gets to 60% dot it with E-bolt n BoN.+ heal pet.Have used this method sucessfully numerous tomes in PoI,PoN,Nadox,ME,UP n othefr places.Sorry so long .Hope this helps.

For me it got easier to solo when I got me first pet. I began walking Norrath for the most part alone and now, in me 61st winter, I still generally adventure with only Fido to keep me company.

Perhaps the question is not how to solo but where. If your focus is getting the most exp for the least time played then soloing is not the way to go. You need to group. If you are playing for the sheer fun of being a Heyokah there are tons of places to hunt.

I think any shammy worth his hammer can kill DB mobs if they don't summon or cast. I go to Velk's for AAs and try to see how big an area I can keep clean of mobs. Or I venture to ME and kill as many monsters as I can in the time I have to play. Turns out it's quite a few. No one can get mana as fast as we can. The key is learning how to single pull for the zone yer in and then learning how to bring em down as quickly and efficiently as possible. We can do some amazing things.

My gear is quite mundane. I recently had a raiding 70 ranja friend of mine show me his sleeves. They were better than all my gear put together. lol, They were better weapons than the one I carry. But in the end does it matter? I truly believe that I have as much fun murdering Gorangas as me ranja friend has raiding Gods. And isn't fun what The Game is all about?

I use my pet as another dot personally. They're much too weak to tank. If you get virtue before you run out and about I find that I can tank mobs pretty easily once they're slowed. As Brewnoe mentioned, I pull with Malo, sick the pet on them to tank temporarily till I get slow, plauge, and the poison dot to land, then they usually come for me. From that point on I tank, and can easily canni and heal as necessary while the dots do their work.

But I must admit I don't typically solo in the planes. I usually spend my solo time in Kunark, Velious, and Luclin zones for the most part. The dark blue mobs in those zones don't hit as hard, have as many resists, or typically as many hps as in the zones from PoP on.
