Classes: The Shaman

Shamen - primitive power. The only magic using class of the barbarians, ogres and trolls, shamen get a variety of spells that combine aspects of most of the other magic using classes. This combination, along with the racial strength, means the class can be played in a variety of different ways.

What is the best way to develop and play your shaman? What spells and skills are the most and least useful? Can a shaman be soloed, and if so how? How should you play your shaman in a group?

Post your strategies on how to best play and develop the Shaman and read, rate and comment on what others have to say.

I'm a cheap skate. I admit it.

I don't know where to farm for plat at this level.

...And honestly, farming for plat is boring. I farmed BB gobbies to get what I have now, and I'm dreading going back to the farming grind, once I can take down HGs. It's my least favorite aspect of the game.

I won't twink this character with plat from my main, because, well, any plat I earn goes to upgrading my main. However, any drops that I can get with my main (usually solo) are fair game.

So, that being said:

Does anybody have any suggestions for quests for decent low-level to mid-level shaman gear? Any advice on things that are actually questable at this level? (For instance, the shaman newbie armor is outstanding.) You'll notice, if you look at my magelo, that I have a bunch of the Rec Lvl 40 stuff in the bank, that I've already quested. (The lavastorm quests are pretty awesome.)

Feel free to give advice in general about gear as well. Honestly, I feel like I am under-geared, but I can still solo non-casting reds if I can kite 'em, so obviously gear isn't everything. Regardless, a higher Wisdom, and a larger mana pool might be nice.

Thanks in advance.

I am a strong advocate of regen gear for the up and coming shaman so if you can farm it a Fungus Covered Scale Tunic would be a good place to start. 15 per tick regen is really handy for staying alive. Not sure if you could solo the camp though since I never tried it myself. I have heard of people who claim to have done it though.

If that's out of the question them a Ceremonial Iksar Chestplate is a good replacement. 5 per tick regen and not very hard to get with a tracker. I've farmed quite a few of them with a lower level druid partner. You can also get another good seller from the same camp (Forager cycle, Iksar Hide Mask goes for 10-12kpp) that could go a long way to helping gear up the shaman.

Another item I've always loved is the Rune Etched Icewurm Fang. A 12/19 piercer that drops in Kael. It would go a long way towards getting you piercing skill up too.

(I would recommend keeping all your weaponm skills up when you are young. It really hurts to raise them later.)

With just those two items you could solo to 51 as a shaman easily.

Once you get to 35 you should look at your cultural armor too. The Expert Frostwarded stuff is pretty sweet. It generally goes pretty cheap in the bazaar since it's a good skill-up route for higher end blacksmithing. Or you could farm the items necessary yourself and ask someone to do the combines for you. One of the drops is from hill giants (lambent stones) so you should make some nice change while you're farming it.

Thanks so much for the great response. (Good Advice deserves a rate up.) My Paladin is level 52 with 6AAs. I'm not gonna be soloing anything deeper than the entrance to Seb anytime soon.(And even that's dicey. I keep Divine Aura loaded at all times, and pray for a quick /q in the event the mob gets away at 1%, which it inevitably does.) Although, with a Druid or Ranger friend, the forager cycle might be a possibility.

Honestly though, I was thinking more about quests that are good for shamans.

Like these:
Bibol's Errands
Welnik's Picks and Ore
Admittedly, those are good for a wide variety of people...

I lucked out, and did the Firiona Vie quests for the Drape and the Ring during the brief window when they were available.

I don't mind items with a Level Req of 40 or so, as I'll get there soon enough.

I spent some time on my trader last night, and got a Wallwalker's Helm for 200pp. That's really an incredible price. I was comparative shopping last night, and managed to buy everything for my Earring of Solstice but the Blessed Fishing Rod . Spent a total of 1.2K on the various parts. Still pretty good.

Oh Well, I'm broke again. Hopefully by the time I get home, someone will have bought that GJB I've got up for sale, and I can use the proceeds to buy that fishing pole.

Just noticed Brewnoe's suggestion in an earlier thread:

Holly Longtail's Replacement Parts

This is the kind of stuff I'd like to see more of.
Anybody else got a favorite piece of questable shammy gear they'd like to mention?

(This is paticularly awesome, as I have a Cockatrice Beak still on my shammy, that I was intending to sell as vender loot.)

The Coldain Military Wristguard is a sweet item for the young shaman.

The quest is easy if you can add an Ogre Warrior of Rallos Zek to your stable for a few hours. Otherwise you will need to do a lot of faction work.

Just have the paladin kill orcs in CC until the acid drops and have the ogre loot it and do all the hand-ins. Once the ogre does the hand in to the Broodmother then switch to the paladin for the final kill and then loot the bracer with the shaman.

At 52 you may want a little help with Korf. He hits hard but a slower or healer would be more than enough to put you over the top on him. Also getting a low level alt to the broodmother can be iffy since some of the wurms see invis but it can be done. I just had a bard kite everything out of the way but there are other methods that will work too.

If your paladin is working on the Coldain shawl quest he may want to do a few extra frost giant head and toes turn-ins afterwards since Korf is on Dain faction. It's a small faction hit though and easily fixed.

Welnik's quest is stupid easy and well worth doing at your level. If you like I can give you the locations of where the picks are. Three are at cave entances but I had a bit of trouble finding the fourth. I used my druid to do the quests since they travel so well and just gave the items to my alts.

There's also an Ogre shammy near the zone in to Timorous Deep. The Great Oowomp or something. He drops a nice buff extending head item that is good to level 44 and is rarely camped. Just go to your right as you get off the boat. He's standing outside a hut with only one wussy bodyguard.

Thanks for the great responses.

I'm actually lvl 33 now. (I know my magelo doesn't reflect this. I haven't sync'd lately.) I took out my first Hill Giant a couple of nights ago.

I did some scouting for the coldain military wristguard, and built that Ogre warrior alt. (It annoys me. I already have an Ogre warrior, but he's my bazaar mule, and agnostic.) I'm not gonna make a run at it untill I have a significant amount of time to put into it.

I got the fine antique ring and, am currently working towards Earthen Gloves of Wisdom. I should be able to solo Flame Dancers with my pally, if I can get 'em one at a time. Especially, since they're casters. Bell likes fighting casters.

Thanks for all the great advice, and let me know if you come up with anything else.

One small thing about the Earthen Gloves of Wisdom is that the Nurga and Droga quest were "fixed" by the Devs and the Hand-in NPCs get reset with many server resets.

The original belief was that freeing the slaves was supposed to be a one time event on the server. The developers don't seem inclined to comment on whether this is "working as intended" now or not.

It may be difficult to find Rockshaper Dritam free on your server. Freeing the slaves in Nurga and Droga is not something you will be doing solo. And few guilds powerful enough to do it are interested in the gear any more.

I'd check to see if he is free before investing any time or money on this quest. He should stand just north of the entrance to Chief Rokgus' cave in Frontier Mountains.

I have the gloves myself but I got them when these quests were new and many players were interested in them.

Good luck with it though, they are pretty nice gloves.

BTW If the slaves are free on your server you might want to look into the Vengeance of Osvima as well. The belt is pretty nice with Extended Enhancement 3 on it and your shaman can get to her with an invis potion, do the turn-in and then gate out is he's careful.

Thanks.

And thanks for tip off on the belt. Really nice item.

Seriously, this has been one of the most helpfull threads I've read in a long time.

I checked, and Dritam is up on Cazic, so if I can hurry and complete the quest before a server reset, I'll have my nice gloves.

Nurga is kind of a pain. I have to really be up on things there. Wandering mobs and ever-breaking roots make soloing there kinda painful. Oh well, risk = reward, right?
