Classes: The Shaman

Shamen - primitive power. The only magic using class of the barbarians, ogres and trolls, shamen get a variety of spells that combine aspects of most of the other magic using classes. This combination, along with the racial strength, means the class can be played in a variety of different ways.

What is the best way to develop and play your shaman? What spells and skills are the most and least useful? Can a shaman be soloed, and if so how? How should you play your shaman in a group?

Post your strategies on how to best play and develop the Shaman and read, rate and comment on what others have to say.

Hello,
I am relatively new to EQ and was thinking of starting a shaman alt. Are they as good as clerics? I read somewhere that SOE said they were as good as clerics at healing when a mob could be hit with a slow spell? Does the player base agree?

Also what should I concentrate on for gear?

thank you.

Howdy,

Despite what some people may say, clerics are much better healers. Yes, shammys are decent healers, but, as i have played both a cleric and a shaman, i would have to say cleric. The fact that a shammy can slow a mob is very nice though, but in my experience as a shammy, healing and slowing can be hard. slowing makes the job of healing easier. It is more of a matter of opinion. if you are looking for the best healer, clerics are number one. if you want someone who can do a little bit of everything pretty good, go for a shaman. just thought id throw in my 2 cents

Cleric has more healing power, but is much more limited in other types of utility. IF you have another class that can slow in the group, a cleric makes a better healer. However, in a situation like duo grinding, the healing advantage of the cleric is offset by their inability to slow the mobs.

Both classes are very desirable in groups. Usually the shaman will be wanted as a slower/buffer/debuffer, rather than healer. Shaman also solos MUCH better than cleric.

Basically, either one is fun to play, but they are very different.

thanks, I knew it would be wiser to go to the player base than SOE for an accurate answer. Is SOE planning to "rebalance" the Shaman as they have other classes? If so, what is the plan?

I'd hate to get too far into my character development and find SOE has changed the class so much that I don't like it.

Thanks for taking the time to offer help/suggestions!

Heres the casters realm shamens site

From the sony shaman forums you can see what gripes the high level shamans have right now if any. All the classes have gripes so you can take it with a grain of salt. You can link the other classes forums also if you want to see what their grumps are

I like the casters realm for a resource to starting any new char, although I also look at different sites.

Shamans have been a strong class for years and I'd expect them to remain one if sony rebalances them or not.

As for myself I was just here looking for info thinking of starting a shaman. I play a druid main. There's 3 healing classes. Clerics, Shammys and Druids. I agree, Clerics are by far the best healers and almost more important than that they have the 96 Rez. Druids are maybe second best at healing and nuking but are best at nothing.

Shammys get the pet an killer buffs. At high levels the pet may not matter so much, but they still have the killer buffs.

I think in general clerics are not as fun to play, they pretty much just heal. But because most people don't want to be just a healer, and because they are so good at it, makes it easy for clerics to get groups.

I think you'd have fun with the shaman.
