Classes: The Shaman

Shamen - primitive power. The only magic using class of the barbarians, ogres and trolls, shamen get a variety of spells that combine aspects of most of the other magic using classes. This combination, along with the racial strength, means the class can be played in a variety of different ways.

What is the best way to develop and play your shaman? What spells and skills are the most and least useful? Can a shaman be soloed, and if so how? How should you play your shaman in a group?

Post your strategies on how to best play and develop the Shaman and read, rate and comment on what others have to say.

about good dots.
Level 34 Curse - Curse dots wont break root. LDON points

I allways have trouble normaly 1-2 levels soloing before a new spell level. Dots are not nuks, you need mulit recasts of your most effective damage/maga ratio.
Slow, debuff, Tank some , cast dots and root and move back to heal.

Well at level 29 you get a Befriend Animal, but it is more likly to kill you then help. But used right can be a big plus till you get you first real pet.

Look for items to upgrade.
Research: Read the old articles on this site.
Look at the other sham links.

Basicly it is your gear and knowlege of mob and area of pull that will make or break you.

Focus Effects
A Mana Perserve item is a must..
mana Regen
Hit points Regen
upgrade you items AC,HP,WIS
HORSE/DOGMAR 9.7K is slowest and cheepest- Acts like sitting for mending HP/MANA outdoors only - bummer

Armor:
Look at DON armor - I am not sure (it is still new)
lvl 45 Armour Set Velious (Velios has 3 different armor sets based upon fraction with 3 different areas)

Ok, my shaman's got a horse and some pretty good stuff, I have a few spots that need upgrading but I will get around to it..the bigest thing is, I can never seem to really find a good spot to hunt, and I am no good at finding where I get spells and all that, and never have been, most of the time I end up running around with half my spells, wich ends up making me not like my guy asmuch....tho I do like my little shaman alot...but I will like him a lot more if I can find where the best places are for me to hunt get spells and what armor is the best (not 100000k armor or anything =) thank you for your info I really need all the help I can get =)

Flip I believe that all spells up 51 are vendor bought and even a few higher ones like HoS. If you click on the Spells... link on the left Alla will tell you where to buy em. If you have access to a HL druid a trip anywhere is a snap. My 44 druid does all the shopping for me whole family and just uses the shared bank to transfer stuff.

I can't help you with the LDoN spells. The only one I ever bought is Pack Shrew, a most useful spell. I think I bought it in the Butcherblock camp.

As far as hunting zones go I never had more than the usual trouble soloing any zone my level up to Kunark. In later expansions the mobs can be tricky. There are a few surprises (like finding out that the Great Saprophyte can summon!) but they are all pretty well straight forward. Again, I use the Zones..., Levels... link on the left and try out zones that cap a few levels higher than I am at the time. Keep trying zones till ya find one ya like then use it till the mobs turn green.

IMO the best armor is simply the best armor you can afford. I look at AC first for armor in my price range then see which one has the best stats. It's a lot like buying a car in RL. If I can't afford an upgrade I make do with what I have and keep swinging. Along the way you pick up drops that are upgrades (mostly jewelry in my experience) and sometimes people will lay stuff on you that is better than what you have. A good friend gave me Naraithus (which I still have. Khas, where did you go?) when I was 30 or so and I used it till around 50 when we went and farmed a Soulstripper. Nowadays you can buy even better weaps in the bazaar for whatever plat you are willing to spend.

While somewhat more mean spirited than this forum the general EQ forum is a gold mine of information. Bottom line is try everything. All you can lose is a few hours of game play while the experience you gain of fighting in various zones is priceless and permanent.

Hi there bro..I am a level 58 shammie on the sarryrn server..and you know I found that dots are not always what shamans need..They are useful but as a shaman you have the ability to be a pretty bad **** tank...U Ur pet thats lethal with the right set up. I use a setup similar to this

cast slot 1 - Slow
Cast slot 2 - Cripple
Cast slot 3 - Envenomed bolt
Cast slot 4 - Root
Cast slot 5 - (Pets haste..not sure of name)
Cast slot 6 - Chloroplast
Cast slot 7 - Haste
Cast slot 8 - frenzy

Now this setup works only after you and your pet are all buffed up..So its best to make a set of spells for your "self Buffs" and "Pet buffs" which will more than likely be your statistic buffs. I found with everything setup this way ...you seem to save whole butt loads of mana..and can literally chain pull ..and you and your pet are rollin in loot and pp.
I do understand that it also matters on your wisdom and intelligence..mostly wisdom young:) I am 255 wis ...and 161 int.
Please dont be mad at me everyone if you dont agree with me..I just want to help a newbie shaman with my experiences in norrath..everyone has an opinion :) ...By the way welcome to everquest friend and Good luck!!

Best ldon camp is whichever you can find a group going to Smiley: wink If they're taking a vote, North Ro (Tak) will help you the soonest. Armor is tough to give advice on without knowing what you have, generally you can find better in the bazaar before you can get enough points to buy ldon armor unless your guild is very into ldons.

The sets from cheapest to best:
Mana-Woven (EF): 20pts/piece
Geomancer's (Nro): 48 pts ea
Stone-Linked (EC): 150
Ghastly (BB): 442
Mire (Guk): 760
Incorporeal (EF): 1492

As far as ldon spells, go to http://www.cardplace.com/eq/ldon/list.cgi - class: shm item type: show only spells.

Pack shrew (BB) is one a lot of people will look for.
The single target shrew (Guk = short for good luck getting people to go there) is very handy for pet pulling groups indoors - wait until you're getting 24+ pts per adv, then drag em down there for one
DoTs: Curse (NRo lvl 34), Anathema (BB lvl 54), Bane (EC lvl 64) are all very useful, especially if yuo can get them at or close to the level you can mem them .. there's also Odium (Guk 43) but I don't imagine too many people get the 72 points for it before they hit 54 and the poison DoTs in the high 30s and 40s make not having this one easier to deal with.

Sorry I dont have any specific area to go solo at you level.

if you can't get any specific information you might try the following method.

Check you level on this chart.
https://everquest.allakhazam.com/eq_consider.html

Find what color you want to pull.

use the level chart to reseach what area has that level of MOB.
https://everquest.allakhazam.com/zones/Level_Chart.html

Read up on those zones and see if they list solo spots or visit each zone and see for your self.

Spells: For below 50 to find some locations I like the old
http://eq.crgaming.com/menu/spells_old.asp

They list if Vender or unknow but if you click on the spell it has the old form where peeps wrote up information about the spell use and might have where it is bought at. P.S. this is an old list and spell levels have changed and some uses.
