Classes: The Shaman

Shamen - primitive power. The only magic using class of the barbarians, ogres and trolls, shamen get a variety of spells that combine aspects of most of the other magic using classes. This combination, along with the racial strength, means the class can be played in a variety of different ways.

What is the best way to develop and play your shaman? What spells and skills are the most and least useful? Can a shaman be soloed, and if so how? How should you play your shaman in a group?

Post your strategies on how to best play and develop the Shaman and read, rate and comment on what others have to say.

Ya know, I've come to realize once again that I have lost sight of the reason I started playing EQ. I finally cracked 58 and got well into 59. So I started straining to get to 60 and 61. I've been sitting here searching the zones for places where I can solo and still get good exp and great loot. As I was doing so I realized that I probably haven't been to 80% of the zones in EQ either because they were once too high or now give no exp. I see that without realizing it I have joined the parade of players whose aim in Norrath is to get higher in level and acquire better gear so as to get higher in level and acquire better gear.

So I'm gonna get off the treadmill. I'm gonna do a walkaround and explore all of Norrath starting with Antonica. My level is high enough and my gear is good enough that I believe I can handle most of the old world zones (gulp). I'm gonna take half me plat, buy a horse and set off with Fido. I think I'm battle smart enough to stay alive and know when I'm in over me head. Gonna get the KEI monkey off my back whilst I'm at it. I'm in a good guild so there will be exp groups and raids along the way but I aim to see what I've been missing. First stop will be Permafrost of course. Gonna see how far I can get before the Lady Vox eats me.

I mention it here because I know I'll be coming back for advice as I come up against new challenges. There's a lot of experience and knowlege in this forum and not all of it has to do with high end raids or WoS. Wish me luck, I'll keep ya posted.

GL campdog.
I remember back way back when there was no POK no horses. You either had to pay a druid/wizard or run from Halas to Freeport then hop on a boat that took forever just to get to Butcherblock.

It will be fun campdog. Trust me there is alot out there that many toons have never seen and will never see. And if I remember right you will get booted from zone in permafrost if get close enough to VoX due to LVL. There is a couple fabbleds in Perma also right now so pick up a couple fabled items too hehe. Just watch out for the Ice Giants in there there is a couple LB to lvl 65 further in.

HAVE FUN AND ENJOY THE GAME.

SOunds like a wonderful plan ;), btw Lady Vox will leave you alone you abovie level 52.. however something really annoying happens.. if you open the door to where she is.. an icegiant magus promptly ports you right out of permafrost and into everfrost... and in doing so Frido goes bye bye for some reason..

but it is a great zone and the ice giants as we all know drop nice place... if you find any diamond dust!! wooohooo that alone can make you a pretty bundle as it is use to make gem cutters :)

Heya, Camp.

Sounds like an excellent idea. From time to time I run from Halas to Felwithe via Highhold; then back to Qeynos via Rathe Mountains; and finally over to the Hole. Stopping to check for some of my old nemesis' that have laid the smack down on me in years long gone. Takes me several hours but usually get some tribute loot or, rarely, some good bazaar loot. Not to mention reviving some great memories.

In addition to the Fabled Mobs, be mindful that several old world zones have been revamped. CT, of course, was some time ago. But Mistmoore and Splitpaw are now 65+ hunting zones. So trips to those zones isn't reccommended. Or atl least not beyond zone-in.

Safe Journeys to you.

lol Moj, I forgot about the Mistmoore revamp and innocently went there to map out the next steps on me epic quest. Got eaten alive about three steps into the zone. Won't make that mistake again.

Permafrost - Hey guys, the fun is back! I aint been to Permafrost since before LDoN came out. I go in with Fido and no KEI or Virtue and have at em. It's a hoot! I shrink down to goblin size and explore to me heart's content. Gobbys are green but they still managed to kill me when I accidentally pulled 3 IGs and panicked and ran blindly. Haven't seen a train like that since Blackburrow. Learned just how complacent I had become with KEI and a melee or two along.

Found out that A)You can make a buck offa green mobs, and B)The IGs inside are way tougher than the permanently camped ones outside. I been averaging about 1 - 200pp profit per trip before me packs are full. Not trader margin by any means but on the other hand I didn't drop it either :-) My aim is to get to Lady Vox and get booted then on through Blackburrow and see what the Karanas have to offer. Tried camping the Jailor and Alchemist gobbies but it's too boring camping greens. Found the Scryer but couldn't figure out how to get him outta his icecube. Gonna keep trying though.

When I got killed I made mesself a set of banded armor after I couldn't get back in nekkid and stuck it in the bank afterwards for the next time. Took all the time I needed, helped out a few newbies and chatted with friends without worrying about burning KEI. Recovered my corpse without a summons or help. Who cares about leveling? This is why I play EQ!

You got yourself a deal brother as well as me heartfelt thanks. I will buy the brandy and patterns as well. I got about 10 Essences so far and gobby blood is a fairly common drop. My Smithing skill would be up to the task but alas, I am no brewer. I'll keep the cultural stuff in the bank and lay the banded on a newbie.

I'll send ya an email when I assemble the components and you can take yer time doing the combines. I don't plan on dying much :-)

Hi guys. RL tragedy struck me May 11 and I haven't had the heart to play. I'm back on the boards at least and I'll probably start murdering mobs again soon. It's definately been in my thoughts from time to time. You guys still around?

Your posts have inspired me to move my toons in my old account and get back in the game myself. I have a newbie kitty shaman and I am currently fighting her in Blackburrow. It is always a good time to kill a gnoll. I hope that everything in RL works out for you. It broke my heart to read you were having such a hard time after all the wonderful posts you have made. I wish you and yours the best. I will keep reading anything you put up here and hopefully my own shaman will one day reach your level.

If you were referring to my posts I thank you for the kudo. I do hope that my love for EQ and the shammy class shows through in my posts. Apparently like-minded people find agreement with my sentiments and I find joy in that. LOL I even find mesself up-rated to Scholar!

If it WAS I who inspired you to return to Norrath it is a fine Christmas present for me indeed. Depending on how long you've been away you will find things much changed and IMHO generally for the better. The newest expansion is well worth getting. Being able to shroud down as another class and visit the places of my childhood is fun. I especially enjoy showing true newbies the wonders of my adopted world. The only thing I won't do is PL anyone as I feel it is a disservice to the player and anyone with whom they group.

Being a shammy is way cool and I find that my services are always in demand either in a group or in the Plane of Beggers. As an added benefit I have been able to pretty much solo my way to level 61 with limited play time available and I see no reason why I won't make 70 by and by. I have even managed along the way to grow a druid to 50 and a rogue to 30. I believe I'll never have the uber gear available to those who are able to raid but I'm used to that from RL and I always have a blast playing.

IMO my druid and necro are better soloers but NO class is as much fun as a shammy. In battle I truly am the rock upon which the tides of war break. I love standing my ground to slug it out with a mob whilst the tank shouts 'ZONE!' and seeing my comrades take heart and rejoin the battle. I love being able to throw in the quick heal or nuke that turns the fight in our favor. I love stealing aggro and being able to get pounded without dying. Many are the mobs who found out to their woe that Fido and I were not as easy a taste treat as they thought. I have even returned to Everfrost and murdered every stinking Orc in the zone just for the pure pleasure of revenge :-) I still smile when I remember the first time I killed a mammy H2H and just wait until you can sit back and let yer pet eat a once-awesome mob.

Welcome to our ranks young Heyokah. There are those here who will show you kindness and wisdom far beyond me own humble ability to provide. Give em hell and keep yer buffs up.

Campdog, just when I was getting *gasp* bored with my shaman, I stumble onto your posts and get excited about the game again. You made me realize that I had fallen into the "level up, buy better gear, rinse and repeat" group, too. I just wanted to say thank you for opening my eyes to the truth - that the world in which so many of us live is within a game, and being a game, it's meant to be fun. EQ is not about who you're better than, or who's better than you. It's all about who's having the most fun. And after reading your posts on exploring all the zones, soloing, etc., I'm sure I'll be having a lot more fun than I had been. Thanks again for the insight, and GL with your walkabout. If you don't mind, I think I just might do a level 54 imitation of that idea. And I'll definitely be keeping a journal, lol.

I have read quite a few of your posts Campdog and you have inspired me to knock the dust off the boots of my Shammy and start playing again.
I have several other toons that when I was introduced into Norath was shown a path by several of my friends to gain exp and do certain quests. I would always go to the same zones kill the same mobs over and over again. When I got to a certain point usually around level fifty I would create a new toon and do it all over again. This got old and I quit playing for about a year until a friend of mine talked me into trying it again. I started doing some research and read some of your posts and decided to do something a little different. I took my level forty Troll Shaman and broke the mold I started to go on a walkabout. I took him to some of the old zones that I would just pass over normally and found a few interesting suprises. I did Dulak to get my Stocism spell and that was alright for exp. I worked that place before so after the spell was aquired then it was time to move. I decided to check out City of Mist since I have to go there for my epic anyways. I went in there with a fellow Necro both of us level forty five now and we were shocked by the exp we got from the area we gained two levels in about three hours. I gained several pieces for my faction quest there also. We then worked Traknons for a while to get our Seb key this was decent exp. I went back to solo in CoM and made it to level fifty one. Now its time to move elsewhere until I need to come back for my epic. I haven't decided where to next but I will post my travels to try and help others.

Thanks Campdog

You all have touched an old shammy's heart. /kneel to you all. At a time in RL when I find it tough going I come here and find like minded people who are able to reach out and inspire me. Thank you.

Gam, I didn't miss it that your first post in this forum was on this thread. Believe me it's WAY fun to go to the places that you may have missed along the way. I found to my surprise that there is decent loot to be had even in green zones if only to gift to your alts. I discovered the stupid easy quest in Lavastorm for the Glowing Magma Ring and the Intricate Tool Belt and now all me toons have them, if only to grow into. While doing that I decided to shrink and explore Sol A. I had gone there as a youth but it was before I had Lev and the lava scared me off. The gobbys look way better then they had when I was there last and Fido got quite fat eating them. I actually fell into the lava and just climbed out with litle damage and demolished the three mobs that aggroed on me. Fido was off looking for a tree or something. No loot worth even selling to a vendor dropped but guess what? I found a little guy who was selling the Bag of the Tinkerers for around 6K. Now I have about five of them : - )

Perhaps I was the only one on Norrath who didn't know about these things, but who cares? I do know that I had fun exploring a place that I was only too happy to get out of before and I now have a very nice vendor marked on me map. I wasn't hearing the clock tick on me KEI and Virtue either. After two years of playing EQ how much else have I missed? The gaps in people's education can sometimes be surprising and how many of us know even 1/10 of the wonders Norrath contains?

Another thing I enjoy is running across true newbies in these zones and sharing my knowlege and experience with them. They don't know that they're in over their heads just like I didn't when first I ventured there. It's neat to help them along and then sit back and say 'loot up' as others did for me. It doesn't matter that my gear is crap and that what they loot isn't even vendor trash. I feel uber : - )

I would very much enjoy hearing about Gam's and Eod's travels if you guys were gracious enough to share them here. And Lickle, you're just a dear, always nice to read your words. IMHO EQ, like RL, is not about the destination but about the journey.

KK, got bored with Kunark and decided to solo on to Velious. Went through OT to EW. Been to Thurgadin a lot so I decided to try to be a one man raid on Kael Drakkal. A few interesting battles but nothing to write home about. Only got run out once or twice. I did find out that the green what's his name at the ZI is unkillable. He ate Fido before I figured it out. No great drops in the city but picked up a few velium weaps for Fido. After making mesself even MORE hated by giants than I already was I went through to the Wakening Lands.

This was a little more like it. Murdered a few LB and DB giants as I ventured in, nothing nice dropped. I saw the Plane of Growth on my map and wandered over to it killing stuff as I went. Got to the bridge over the moat and it hit me. I had been here before! One of the first raids I ever went on, in a VERY bad guild. Raid wiped and the leader ninja looted all the drops. I remembered following everyone to the tower and seeing the constant attacks by red cats and other scary things. LOL they were green to me now and conned only dubious. Neat. The fauns on the bridge that had earlier scowled at me ignored me and Fido totally. Cool.

Went into the tower and discovered a merchant selling a great spell for me druid that I didn't know about. Checked with me trader and none were on sale in the Bazaar. Bought 10 for less than 200pp and have since sold 2 for 2K each :-) About this time my famous ranja friend, being bored, joined me and went through to PoG. Cool, I was gonna go there anyway, being uber and all... I went up to the top of the tower and saw the tree that ya click on and remembered sitting there waiting for the raid to start, praying that I would survive the wait and hoping I wouldn't soil me kilt. Aghhh.. that was a long time ago... click.

As soon as I zoned in I got hit by a whirlwind thingie that I couldn't see. Fido was on him like white on rice and making a dent. As I was casting slow a big old wolf joined the party. NP, I slowed em both and backed up the wolf keeping an eye on Fido. I figured he could hold his own since both mobs were DB and he had Celerity and Spirit Quickening on. Not to mention the velium weaps that I got in Kael. My ranja friend sent me a Tell saying he couldn't help since it would ruin his faction and he foraged good stuff there. I typed back and said "NP. I got this" I looked up to see some named Unicorn hurting me real bad and my friend whacking away at him. I'm pretty sure that a couple more ill tempered mobs joined in as well. I was typing "Don't worry about me" and got as far as 'Don't wo..' when I saw, LOADING... PLEASE WAIT...

Woke up near the Dogle bank. Good thing Barbs look good nekkid. My friend told me that the unicorn dropped some real nice no-level Lore rogue pants that he couldn't use. Got me rogue to the tree only to find out that ya hadda be higher than 30 to get in. *sigh*

I have since been back there with my 52 druid and got to visit my deity, Tunare. Wow. The unicorn loves me. My ranja friend tells me I only hafta clear Crushbone once or twice to get faction there fer me shammy. Maybe, .... nah.. Ya gotta love this game...
