Classes: The Shaman

Shamen - primitive power. The only magic using class of the barbarians, ogres and trolls, shamen get a variety of spells that combine aspects of most of the other magic using classes. This combination, along with the racial strength, means the class can be played in a variety of different ways.

What is the best way to develop and play your shaman? What spells and skills are the most and least useful? Can a shaman be soloed, and if so how? How should you play your shaman in a group?

Post your strategies on how to best play and develop the Shaman and read, rate and comment on what others have to say.

DING 59!

I'd like to qualify a previous statement I made. I said it is possible to solo to high levels, and it is. Now I add it is not easy, desireable or efficient.

I have been stuck in 58 for the last three months due to solo playing. I went from 50% of 59 to 1 death away from an unrecoverable loss of level. For the various reasons see above. Two weeks ago me guild finally folded after an extended death watch and I was free to join another guild.

In the two weeks since I joined the new guild (Majestic Might on Stromm) I've gone from the cusp of 58 to level 59 last night. The difference is a good guild. This may be common sense to most of you but it is new news to me. MM is me sixth guild and it's the first time since I started playing EQ that I've gotten any benefit from being in a guild other than new friends.

I remain steadfast in my determination to play EQ for fun and avoid the leveling/uber gear trap but I gotta say it's neat getting somewhere :-)

Woohoo !! Gratz Campdog !!

Grinding through 59 is a tough one. But as soon as you ding 60, you will be pleasantly surprised to see 60 fly by at an alarming rate. A much needed upgraded pet comes at 61 to boot.

There is no shame, nor dishonor, in politely asking if you can be released from your promise in this circumstance. The situation has changed, and any guild that had honor itself would release a player from that promise. The worst that could happen is that they demand you stick to your promise. If that happens, you have already indicated you would do so.

Ack! Ya mean I'm gonna spend 6 months in 59?
Druid's Grove here I come! :-)
Just kidding, I'm a shammy forever.

Sarge, the guy I made the promise to was working like a dog trying to rebuild the guild. He went so far as to put up 10K of his own plat as a recruitment prize. My promise to him, when people were bailing right and left, was that I would stick it out to the bitter end (not knowing at the time what a stubborn SOB he was). I know he would have said it was cool, no hard feelings, if I said that I wanted to move on. And he would have meant it. But what would that have said about the worth of my promise?

59 was my worste level to get through.. me called it the hell level.. it just seemed like a never ending level.. but no you won't spend 6 months on it .. although it will feel like a year lol.. don't know why that is.. I have heard many people say that 59 was hell to get through.. so I didn't feel so alone at the time :(

However it has it is plus feeling like the hell level.. it makes level 60 feel REALLY special lol

lol I got me GM trophy in dieing long ago. It seems like I've been in the 50s forever so I guess I can stand a little more time in Purgatory.

The biggest problem I forsee will be getting me lvl 60 spells. I usually accumulate the next level spells on the way up but I've finally hit a level where that doesn't seem feasible. I have all the 59 and lower spells, finally getting Talisman of the Raptor at a bargain basement price of 888pp. heheh I can remember a time not so long ago when an 11pp mammy tusk was a fortune now I'm happy to spend less than a grand on a spell!

Although I'm now in a good guild my circumstances haven't changed all that much since the beginning of this thread. I'm gonna concentrate on getting the spells I know I can solo (Malo, Avatar and Torpor in Skyfire) and maybe I'll be getting some exp doing that. I was on my way to the Veeshan entrance to jump a guardian wurm when a guildie asked me what I was doing. When I told him he said "yikes, tough mob" and joined another group! lol we'll see.....

FoS, Malo, and Torpor were the only great spells at 60. Save your platinum for now, and you can obtain the 61-62 spells at cheap rates in the bazaar :).

If you can somehow obtain Malo and Torpor, I would suggest parking a lower level ranger in Iceclad Ocean at the gnoll camp, and takin a few swings at Lodizal =) Loot is nice (shield is great) and you can make a nice profit to make up for Torpor (/shudder) and start saving for those level 65 spells.

Level 59... Exp is slower, but it wasn't that hard because I found a weekend where i could play for about 8 hours straight, and I went from 99% into 58, to about 5% into lvl 61 :).

59-60 probably took me 5-6 hours of WW (west wall) in PoValor, and 60-61 took me 2-3 hours of the same thing. at 61 exp goes back to a mediocre rate, but you will be suprised how fast you will hit level 65. Now just to worry about Fo7 and Q... :)

Hmm.... why a ranger? I turned mine into a mule at 15. How about a 38 druid for tracking and forage or a 23 rogue for the bow?

A druid or a bard would work as well =)

Just need tracking to periodically check on Lodizal.

Where can I view available ldon gear? More specifically this set?

i agree...if i solo, i just "DoT kite". I realize this isn't possible in tight quarters, but it works much better than wasteing mana on root that doesn't stick.

I do it in OT all the time, plenty of room and i dont get adds.

yes i realize this is a limited use cause of adds...i just dont like soloing really.

just an fyi the ornate pants have a clicky root on em. No mana cost root helps with root/rot ie dot dot clicky root. I 3 box so acquiring ornate pattern wasnt that hard, dont know how much pp they sell for.

I solo all the time at 62.Best method i have found is cast Puma proc or jaguar proc on pet(having procweps, muzzle, conv+shm buffs),Pull with tugurs n sic pet with mob running at u-pet will pull argo from u just run around a sec until he does.If slow was resisted i have found "cripple" more effective than Malo in getting slow to stick.Once mob is slowed n pet has argo make sure u keep Puma/Jaguar on pet (this will keep argo).Once mob at 60% apply ur dots n watch the mob die LOL.I have used this effectivly in PoN,PoI,Nadox,Dulak,ME,UP and many other zones.Hope this helps.

I had to go back and read this thread twice, so much info and knowledge shared I'm still in awe.
Camp if your still around hats off for starting an excellent post. I've primarily played a rng and rog for the last year and recently started my shammy (Which I have quickly developed a steadfast disire to play over other classes) I know pretty much which zones for the lower lvls (FoB,CB,FM,EC,OT The list goes on) and have several post on the higher end of 50 and the 60's as far as the planes, But what about from the 40's to mid 50's? Would greatly appreciate any Tips,Tricks and/or suggestions, I am approaching the 40's soon, and just hoping to gear towards what Norrath is throwing my way next.
Thanks in advance for allowing me to pick your brain.

Aye, I'm still around, though not as much as before. If you enjoyed the thread the credit goes to the incredible Heyokahs who posted to it, not to me. But I do thank thee for the pat on the back.

For the mid forties to the mid fifties and even beyond I would have to say my favorite spot is Dulak Harbor. It's easy to get to and the zone is not overcrowded nowadays, at least on Stromm. Decent to nice drops with the ocassional gem thrown in and most pirates drop a few plat. There are plenty of safe spots to pull from and you can pick your level of mob. No casters except in a couple of spots and easy to single pull once you get the pathing down. Shivs and Luggald daggers are a very common drop and serve nicely as pet weaps. Soulstripper is a decent shammy weap and is found in the Luggald caves although I usually find it camped. Once you get into the higher levels you can even solo camp the boats. About the only drawback that I've noticed is that on Stromm there is the ocassional high level player who just cleans out the zone for the gems but that has only happened a few times and not as bad as in someplace like the Rathe mountains.

Good Luck with yer shammy and welcome to the best class on Norrath.

Great place to solo in Dulak is near the Warehouses for the 50's. Little fenced area to the side of one of those is great for single pulls from either warehouse, and the guards that path back and forth. Pull with debuff, run back into the fenced area, sic pet on mob as it gets to front of area so it gets agro, slow mob to get agro back, and tank for pet as it does DPS from behind (casting jaguar on you and pet really helps also). Rinse and repeat. Make sure to pull the mob standing infront of warehouse across from you, is a place holder for a named, for that added xp. As for the high level toon clearing the area, got lucky enough while in my 50's that a 70 zerker wanted to farm meats for his shammy. Asked if I minded, and being an easy going type, said go for it, would give me a chance to rest for a bit. He offerred to group with me, then went to town, pulled about 20 mobs all at one time, and then just whacked the heck out of them. At that time, was quite an impressive sight seeing those crits scroll past in the battle spam. I got a little xp out of it, he got all sorts of meats, and split the gems with me. All in all, was a good time.

After you get done with Dulak, can move to Nadox and get the same type of drops (gems and such) working the campfire, and then other rooms in there.

Glad to hear that you have gotten in with a guild that you enjoy, enjoy grouping with MM myself as a part of NCG.
