Classes: The Druid

Druids - a powerful outdoor class. With the triple ability to heal, inflict direct damage and cast damage over time, druids are a popular solo class, as well as popular in a group. They are also a travelling class, given both sow and teleportation abilities.

How should you play your druid to make the best use of his abilities? What are the best solo strategies? How should the druid be played within a group? What spells are the most and least useful? What skills should you develop?

Post your strategies on how to best play and develop the Druid and read, rate and comment on what others have to say.

How to fake an FD split as a Druid

I have used the following tactic to break into the Plane of Fear with excellent results and believe it could be useful in many other places, like indoors or where mobs can't be Harmonied. Of course it's not really a FD split, it's not even a new tactic or one that only druids could use. Any Gate class with snare or root could probably try this, it's just easier with a Druid or Wizard since they get Succor / Evac.

The short of it: Pull target with adds, snare/root target, succor/gate, run back to camp to tag lonlely mob and kill it.

Druids or Wizards should set up camp at a safe spot near but not too close to the zone succor point or the zone in. Other classes would need to Bind Affinity in an adjacent zone, also a good idea for Druids and Wizards as an additional safety measure in case mobs make it within agro range of the succor point.

If pulls are short go ahead and pull with snare, otherwise pulling with some kind of debuff is preferred and then snare target when close to camp.

In Plane of Fear I would bind outside in Feerot and Gate until the entry area / succor point were all cleared of roamers.

This is a situational tactic, since it only works well when you can set up camp in an area you can quickly and easily get back to after you Gate/Succor. So there are many mobs/camps/areas you wouldn't be able to use this with. Camps deep in a zone that would take too long to run back to, or if you had to run past see invis mobs or some other obstacle.

Go ahead and try it. I expect to see posts from level 60 druids saying how much fun they had soloing a Fear break in. Be warned about Fear though, the Instant Evac AA does not work there although normal succor does. It will probably take about an hour or more to clear Fear entry area for a low 60's Druid.

i did this alot, to pull nameds to zonelines too. nameds surrounded by adds mind you. but sometimes spellcasters would dispell my snared named... then id go kill thelousy casters an repeat it. u just go into a zone kill, kill, kill an if u find a named u can handle blast the chump with some non damaging spell( duh, cause he'll summon you). an run, run, run back to the zoneline.... keeping named target ready, an then snare em an zone... snare lasts awhile.. mobs wander back, talking about your fast getaway skillz. an they leave the named to watch your entrance... u kill the sucker... loot em up. an post links back to you guild, including tales of how ubah u are.... i never tried fear though....

Yes, this is a great tactic. I discovered this as well and it is a useful approach to splitting linked mobs (ie, any that are difficult to single pull and whose 'mobs' are too much for a soloer). It is especially useful in dungeons where the harmony lines of spells won't work. While they are fairly deep in the zone, I use this with the two hoarders in Dragon's Necropolis by Zandi's spawn point. They can not be single pulled and are too much for me to solo but if I can root one and snare the other long enough to pull the snared one deeper in, root him and egress quickly enough, I can then run back in camo'd and find the two hoarders split up enough to take them down as single pulls.

Binding/Gating is an alternative approach but does not work in those zones where you can not bind (many dungeons).

Another approach though much more difficult as it requires slow moving mobs and a fast computer: group snare/root as appropriate, run to a safe spot and camp. You can then decamp and reappear immediately in the same spot but will have lost your aggro. Again, this is much more difficult and can only be used on slow moving mobs since anyone that catches up with you will break your attempt to camp. Example: I like to solo by the jail in Accrylia Caverns but hate being slowed down by the skellies and occasional caster that can see invisible. I will camo as far into the zone as I can, cast snare/root on those that can see invis; re-camo and then run to my solo spot. Since the rooted will eventually come after me, I camp and then decamp in quick succession in order to shake the mob. This avoids the usual necessity of fighting each of the low level (green to me at 62) mobs on my way to my solo point. This is a great way to save some time if in a hurry and to avoid unnecessary mana loss by fighting greenies.

I've used a variation on this tactic to split linked mobs -- works in zones with lots of safe running space and few hunters -- root or snare the linked mob you don't want to fight, then train the mob you do want to fight far enough away to break agro on the rooted/snared mob. THEN turn and kill the target. Don't try it with summoners. If other hunters are around, you'll want to let them know what you're doing so they don't jump in trying to save you and you'll want to be careful about pulling your target too close to others -- not good for social harmony :-).
