Classes: The Cleric

Clerics -- the premier healer in the game. A popular class for any group, the cleric brings the ability to heal the party and keep you from dying, and can even bring you back from death at higher levels.

What is the best way to play a cleric? Can a cleric be soloed, and if so how? How should you play a cleric in a group? What spells are the best ones to buy and develop? what skills should a cleric concentrate on? What items should you seek out?

Post your strategies on how to best play and develop the Cleric and read, rate and comment on what others have to say.

I'm definitely late to the party, but I wanted to update this.

In today's EQ, it's totally possible to solo. Given our healing, you can even pull it off without a merc. Although, I'd recommend keeping a tank merc around for a long time, since they have such incredible damage output.

Spells to Solo By: Not comprehensive. I'm still learning. But the basics are there.
--Ward of Rebuke (periodic BIG damage shield, self only, short duration. Only run it if you're NOT running a merc. ).
--Unswerving Hammer (free dps. Cheap. Fast.)
--Yaulp 5 or better (DIRT cheap. Fast. Increase attack speed. Increase mana regen: Does NOT stack with Blessed Armor line--Yaulp recovers more than the Blessed Armor line).
--HP type One and Shielding buff of choice. Aegolism line rolls them into one. Not sure how Symbols play into it. I think they replace HPT1. So just find the highest levelled one you can cast.
--Blessing of ____ (Cast speed increase).
--Hammer of Judgement or better. (Summoned Weapon. 14/18. Frequently procs decent damage, even vs. non-undead. Of course, you get better weapon damage against undead).
--Vie-line (Creates a resevoir of fake hitpoints, and a percentage of damage taken will come off those first until the resevoir is depleted. Aura of Zealot has the same effect with no limit on the resevoir, but absorbs substantially less according to lucy. Ex: Lucy says panoply of vie is 10% reduction until 2080 is prevened. Aura of the Zealot is 1% until the aura fades).

Since summoned hammers are pretty sweet, don't forget to equip a shield. You can, after all, bash. On a short cooldown. And it can do some surprising damage as it skills up. I'd still recommend hunting predominantly undead, so you get your weapon's Bane damage. I have a spell list called "Combat Prep" which includes summon food/water/weapon, aegolism type, blessing of whatever and miscellaneous stuff like gate. Then I have the "Battle Cleric" spell set with a HOT, average and complete heal, yaulp, ward, unswerving hammer, Vie and a few extra spaces to tailor to the things I'm fighting. The targetted heal shield and reverse ds (unless I'm in the hole fighting gargs--too resistant). Undead DOT, root if they're runners. etc.
Don't forget to grab distillates of Skinspikes and distillates of clarity. I think you can skip alacrity, as the haste wouldn't stack with Yaulp and between having a weapon on an 18 delay, yaulp and a haste belt from the baz, you should be sitting just fine on haste while soloing.

Be flexible.

Like most players today, your over thinking soloing. As a cleric you can get from lvl 1 to lvl 50 in about 7 hours of game play. All you need is DS pots from thr baz. Spell lines you only need heal, hp buff and root. Just stick to ols school zones like
1-10 tutorial
10-20 kurns tower
20-45 city of mist
50-60 OS, Draga or Chardok

Zone into any zone and grab 2 mobs, pull with your lvl 1 nuke spell ( all you need to do is 1 point of damage on any mob to get exp from ds killing). If you can handle 2 mobs easy move up to 3 and so on. Old school mobs hit for less than 1/3 the damage as tss mobs.
