Classes: The Monk

Monks - masters of hand to hand damage. The monk is a powerful fighting class. With their unique set of skills and need to keep their weight load down, monks are a very complex class to develop and play correctly.

What is the best way to develop your monk? Which skills should the monk concentrate on learning? What is the best fighting style for a monk? Can a monk be soloed, and if so how? How should a monk be played within a group? How can a monk best use his skills? What weapons and armor should you try to get for your monk?

Post your strategies on how to best play and develop the Monk and read, rate and comment on what others have to say.

Hello all! The monk is my first attempt at a melee class. Being so, I have no problem training skills like swimming, safe fall, and other skills that aren't directly related to attacking. Swimming I can easily train, as well as anything else I've come across. But safe fall...there has to be a better way than running up a building im PoK and jumping off! What am I over looking?

Find a sharply sloped hill, like one of the plateaus in Butcherblock next to the Wayfairer's camp and walk backwards to get up, then run forwards. Repeat the process a few thousand times.

Stairs are slower, in my experience, but not-quite-but-almost sheer walls seem to work well. Especially with SoW.

far southwest corner (i think thats it) in Warslik's Wood..
there is a "bowl" shaped hill, walk up it and run down, iv gotten as many as 5 skillups per thing..
skill will fly up to around 120..
after that i say let it stand.. it will go up alot more slowly..
another place for it is Eastern Wastes when you can go thru without too much trouble, the zone is ALL hills..
in the 190s your skill will take FOREVER to skill up.. i got like 1 point every 4 or 5 days..
GL with this, its worth it imo being able to take 1/6th or so of the dmg on 600 dmg falls hehe.. and running across EW and never taking dmg is awesome..

other than an accidental fall what else would safe fall be useful for?

..falls that are on purpose?
its very useful..
if theres a decent sized fall, ill only take 200 dmg or so from it...and i dont have the AAs to increase the dmg taken off..
stuff where you have the choice to take a long path or jump for large amounts of dmg.. or have safe fall and jump for very little dmg

Crystal Caverns as an example.. top to bottom gives me 250 dmg or so, would probly be more liek 500/600 without..

I found the best place is in erudin. There is a portal stone after you zone in from the forest which takes you upstair. you have to turn around and jump down toward the portal stone. Try to find the right jump down angle and you can lock into a loop of falling and port up. Just watch your health!!!
Max out FAST!!!!!

Take a trip to East Karana. On the path to High Pass, you can run up and down the gorge walls. They are high enough to train and you can find the right height to minimize damage for your skill level. I have found running up a ways, turning to the middle of the gorge and hitting space bar (jump) as you move towards center of gorge works well. Minimal time to get in position again.

Another good place to get up safe fall is Arcstone. there are several places that you can run down on the mountains and not take much if any damage. Have upped the SF skill on my rogue there to max. Is also something that makes good use of time when the cleric needs to AFK.

My question though is does Dex determin how fast you raise SF? Rogue dex is maxed and went up pretty quick on SF. Monk's is not maxed (some where around 200) and seems to be taking longer to go up.

Erdin is the best place if your faction is ok. Once you get the mark right you can auto "fall" all day.

Num lock across The Great Divide a few times. If you don't have run 3 or better take some sow pots (Running fast = enough speed to drop anywhere from 3-10 times per 20foot slope) I got my monk's and Rogue's safe fall maxed doing this for about 3 hours each character.

Erudin, cool I totally forgot about that place since the last time I went there with my wife who plays Erudite cleric.

I presume you mean the zone in teleporter pad, and setting auto run (forward and double tap enter key) so that you run off the balcony, land on the pad, get a skillup attempt? Then keep the cycle going in a 'death' cycle until you get tired of watching your monk warp or run out of health/food?

I applied this concept to swimming as well. I went to Plane of Tranquility wearing an item with faerune for "enduring breath", used the num lock key while swimming to "auto swim" and went afk to sleep for the night. I woke up the next morning and had maxed my swimming.
