Classes: The Magician

Magicians - Dealers of damage. With the combination of a strong pet and the second best set of direct damage spells, magicians can deal out some serious damage.

What is the best way to develop and play a magician? What strategies work best for soloing your magician? How should a magician play in a group? What spells are the most and least effective? Which pets are the most effective, and when should you use one type over another? What skills should the magician try to develop?

Post your strategies on how to best play and develop the Magician and read, rate and comment on what others have to say.

Returning Mage from '01, got some questions.....

I've just recently returned to EQ and to my surprise my old account was still there. I logged into my lvl 38 Mage and was overwhelmed by how different everything looked. I'm currently level 54 and I still feel like quite the noob. I did notice that it is very easy to level now compared to the old days. It could be the fact that the level cap has risen and I am now leveling a mid ranged toon. I'm sure the exp will slow down the higher I get. I do have a couple questions that I hope some of you will be kind enough to assist me with.

1) About Mercs. I have yet to hire a merc, but I am starting to think that it is a necessity to have. Everyone I see running around has a merc with them. As me being a Mage, do I need a merc to team up with my pet? If so, which merc is best for soloing?

2) Do Mage buffs stack? If they do, which buffs stack with which? I found this site which I am having issues understanding what stacks with what. It was linked from here. In the description of the spell, it lists 1,2,3,6. Do these numbers indicate what they do in a specific buff slot? How do I know which slot to cast specific buffs to make them stack?

I typically play solo, but am not one to shy away from grouping. I play on the Antonius Bayle server, so if anyone is looking to group or have a guild recruiting, look me up. Toons name is Wildside.

Mercs are not necessary, but do help most classes. In general, the advice it stick to a tank merc (Journeyman if you can, otherwise highest apprentice tier) until the 60s. Some may argue for different classes, but in general, without helping other than tagging mobs, a tank merc can power level you. If you do, help, all the better, and good practice to learn how to keep aggro down at lower levels where the merc doesn't have much, as well as other group dynamics. Just not everything.

Mid level most Mages go with Cleric or caster DPS mercs, depending on how they play and what they fight.

https://everquest.allakhazam.com/wiki/EQ:Spell_Data is a good explanation of how stacking works. The sticking link, you linked, works for cumulative effects, but not for non-cumulative ones, as non-cumulative can have multiple sticking, but only the best is in effect. Haste is an example of this, and the link explains how there are different types of haste buffs, that do stack, since they are different spell affect (yes, it's affect) numbers. But, it's still only the best of the same number that sticks that is in effect.

The thread at https://everquest.allakhazam.com/forum.html?forum=1&mid=107789650191138667&page=1&howmany=50#m1267642684137377554 explains how foci effect may be useful to have more than one depending the type and level of spells you cast.

Thanks for the reply. I just got myself into a guild and so far they seem pretty friendly and helpful. One of the guys that I spoke with has a lvl 94 Mage, so I'll at least have someone in guild I can lean on for tips.
