Classes: The Magician

Magicians - Dealers of damage. With the combination of a strong pet and the second best set of direct damage spells, magicians can deal out some serious damage.

What is the best way to develop and play a magician? What strategies work best for soloing your magician? How should a magician play in a group? What spells are the most and least effective? Which pets are the most effective, and when should you use one type over another? What skills should the magician try to develop?

Post your strategies on how to best play and develop the Magician and read, rate and comment on what others have to say.

which is better...

FYI, this should have been posted under the "necro vs. mage" thread but I made it a new post by accident.

As for which is better, its a matter of play style, but one thing to remember is that mages stack better with mercs. The necro pet is made to add some dps and to tank in a pinch, but the mage pet is made to TANK and dps and it can handle adds far better. So, with a merc and (air) pet, you have a solid base of tank and healer. You don't need a group, you ARE a group! At 81 with 930AA my mage can handle 4-5 db mobs with the merc up. Usually I solo without the merc.

Having said all that, I am not dissing necros - they put out hellacious dps and can solo very VERY well even without a merc, though a bit differently. The lich line rocks for keeping mana up. They can root park adds in many situations. Lifetap for health, the list goes on. Kiting is just not my cup o tea.

FD is a teeny bit overrated. At high end, the mage has plenty of defensive moves - Companion of Necessity AA, pocket pet, swarm pets, raging servant pets, pet heal spell, 2 pet heal AAs, and can even summon an insta-gate item.

Bottom line - both are great, try both and choose. I went with mage but your mileage may vary.
