The Wizard - Master Nuker. The wizard's abilities are in direct damage spells and in individual and group teleportation.

What is the best way to develop and play a wizard? What strategies work best for soloing your wizard? How should a magician play in a group? What spells are the most and least effective? What skills should the wizard try to develop?

Post your strategies on how to best play and develop the Wizard and read, rate and comment on what others have to say.

I just thinking I might roll a wizzy soon and I've got about 30k plat to spend. Anyone have any suggestions for some good twink equipment for a wizzy or at least what kind of stuff to look for? Any advice would be appreciated.

Might go without saying, but you max your int out ASAP. Int is to wizards as HP are to Warriors, only difference being that when our mana runs out we can still run!!! Also, it will be very beneficial to get an Increased Damage IV o V very early on. This will give you more bang for your buck. with 30k to spend these two ideas shouldnt be too hard to do. If you can, also look for Reduced mana effect items, for the obvious reasons, and increased range items/spell haste effect items, these last two will help a TON when you start quadding. Wish i could give you more specifics on the items, but seeing as Bazaar is very easy to search, you shouldnt have too much trouble searching for items with these effects/int boosters.

P.S. IMHO mana regen items are extremely over priced and are not as effective as other effects, especially with the new downtime regen. I would avoid these items unless you find that 30k is able to do ALL that i recomended plus mana regen...

I would not worry about max Int. just worry about mana. Get items the give u the highest mana boost. You will max Int. without even trying. Robe of tempest is a very nice twink Item I used it from lvl 10 to lvl 58.

When I want to twink a new alt (sometimes I play them "pure") I give them my hp kit:

The highest hp jewellry you can find [ring, earring and neck should get you past 300hp added for less than 4k even if your bazaar is pricey] available and sometimes there is an odd piece available (i.e. back or head)worth grabbing.

Then I do the staff and mask quests in Crescent Reach (level 10 and 5 respectively). Give them a haste belt or I buy one of the 20% haste shields that all/all can use for about 50 plat (I want to train skills). The rest of the gear really doesn't matter under level 20 (30... 40?).

Some classes get an item with mana regen that has a rec level on it and focus effect (mages its a ring, beastlord an ear). Even at level 1 it still gets some mana regen and they are often cheap in baz (usually cheaper than the pure hp item for the same slot).

I agree that other mana regen gear is usally really pricey and you get enough mana regen from the Blightfire Moors (20s) and Gorukar Mesa (40s) quests to make most old-timers sigh (since our casual level 65s had worse gear back in the day). Add in the watch quests connected to the hotzones and twinking a caster is basically built-in to the game now.

It seems most people use temperance and damage shield potions as gear now anyways (a naked character with both on would probably have little trouble getting to level 20)

For the true wizard answer then I would balance mana and hp gear and not worry about stats too much (favouring Int when easy though) till 50+. I'd save the 30k for spells/gear when I got 55+.

Of course if you hate questing my approach (in the earlier post replying to this thread) won't work for you and you'll be spending some money on gear.

Careful selection of The Serpent's Spine quests can avoid the timesinks that give less worthy rewards though.

Dagger of frost is nice for melee'ing at early levels, thats what I did.

At lower levels(1-30'ish): Mana>hp>int
At mid levels(30-55'ish): Mana>int>hp
at 55+ you should have max Int and then just look at mana on items.

Getting focus's is recommended too, listing in priority ranking:
1. Mana presevation
2. Improved Damage*
3. Spellcasting haste**
4. Increased Spellrange**

*Later you will want to get focus items for each kind of nuke (fire, cold and magic).
**These two is kind of about the same. Getting the nuke of before the mob(s) get to you. haste will make you cast faster(doh) and range will make it possible for you to cast from longer distance. I value haste>range because you might find yourself in tight quaters.
