Server Downtime for Game Update Wednesday

EverQuest servers will be brought down Wednesday morning for a "surprise patch" (downtime 4:00 A.M. to 6:00 A.M. Pacific Time) meant to address an (unspecified) in-game issue. They'll also use this opportunity to deal with some other issues:

- We've improved experience gains in older zones for players who are level 101 to 105.
- Experience bonus effects like Lesson of the Devoted and Bottles of Adventure will now apply to the experience rewarded on Heroic Adventure task completion.
- The amount of experience that mercenaries can gain on tasks has been increased dramatically.
- We’re adding new item to the Marketplace, Bottle of Adventure IV, which is a potion that grants +75% base XP.

EverQuest's Community Manager chimed in about the experience changes in old zones:

The goal is to have the experience fall-off as characters level to be in-line with what players have seen in the past when going back to older content after a level cap increase.

...And about the Heroic Adventure bonus experience changes:

The bonus is awarded during task completion. You won't get the bonus XP if LoD/Bottles have expired.

Patch notes as seen on the Test Server can be found here. (There is nothing else mentioned aside from what you see above and the hotfix that went live earlier this week.)

Killing out side of missions appears to have been rolled back and experience is about what it should be. To confirm it, I would need to molo a mob with a level 100 toon, then with a level 105 toon.

What has not been fixed, is the reward claim for completing missions. The expected degradation of experience from level 100 to level 105 is 50%. I will use the first mission from breeding grounds, "The Raise of the Ancients" as an example. In other words, when the mission/quest reward at level 100 is 5%, then at level 105 it should be 2.5%. The reality is that at level 105, it is only 1.25% of a level. Regarding AA experience for that mission, it was fixed at 6AA prior to the nurf, during the nurf, and after what Daybreak calls the un-nurf.

Based the data, the code that broke experience in RoF and earlier zones, has not been yanked from EQ and been ****-canned, and the nurf has not been un-nurfed.

A really old player

The ones cryin about the nerf are the silver, heroic, or spoiled toons, ones that want to get to 105 in a day... Yes its possible but they are the ones that end up not being able to play their toons for crap....(OH on lvl 105....What do I do) .. or the toon cant cast a spell ( Heal please...HEAL PLEASE...dead)...without fizzeling 20 times. As a player since 2001 I have leveled and PL'ed a lot of toons and remember corpse runs... CLASSIC! This game has gotten so easy to get to MAX lvl its stupid. I can start a char at lvl 85 now and I "EXPECT" to be max lvl the same day....BULLSH..... Thats not what this game is about or what it was meant to be. If they nerf the XP ...SO WHAT.. Its suposta bring HOURS of entertainment not MINUTES. That is what we pay for each month. Do you want a game that you conquer in a day or a game that you enjoy for years to come???

You dont have a clue do you... Daybreak was in charge long before the announcement was made they were taking over. They were the ones that implicated the XP nerf.... It wasnt SOE.

The exp nerf was put in place when the Darkened Sea came out. This was towards the end of October 2014. Daybreak was not in charge at that point in time.

I think it is a good thing that they are fixing the xp nerf in pre-CoTF zones. As i have a 94 Enchanter also, I like taking her into RoF with my 105 Necro and having some fun. Will be a nice change since it is almost impossible to find a group at 90+ since so many people box. Thank you DB Games.

So with this change you want to stop before you make that completion hail. Some people may want to drink an xp potion or start a lesson right before you do the final hail so they can get 2 missions done while its active. So be sure to stop and ask if people are ready for hail.

Yep, while I am glad that the developers have "improved the xp to feel like how it was before".

The lack of actual numbers from the developers makes me wonder if the -75% penalty for 101+ characters in pre COTF zones was merely reduced to ie a -50% penalty instead of reverting the code to what it was before the 101+XP nerf in older expansions zones.

Time will tell indeed.

I really don't understand why there needs to be any nerf to xp in older zones at all. if you level up, the old mobs in the old zones are going from dark blue to light blue or light blue to green. so we will already be getting less xp by choosing to spend our time there whether you nerf it or not. by adding a nerf to the situation, xp will be extra extra low and that doesn't seem fair to someone who has some things they would like to finish they never got around to. which is your average casual player. in other words over half of the eq population I bet has tasks or missions in rof or voa they need to go back and finish when they get the time. but if they spend their time now doing that, the xp will be so bad its not worth doing. so you could basically delete all older zones pre cotf if you are 101. so the game we love that has hundreds of zones with nearly limitless content boils down to 2 expansions. nerf the nerf. keep xp normal. is it really overpowering if a 101 goes to rof or voa and gets normal light blue or green xp.

The exp nerf came in october of 2014 when the Darkened Sea expansion came out. The players realized this was a bunch of bs and didn't like it. SoE was like well FU. We are doing as we see fit as always despite what the players want or how many times they have been right. They also didn't want to break tradition of nerfing older content that they had worked on.

Now Daybreak steps in to look like the good guys. One of the first few patches. Increase exp in old content and add a 75% exp potion on the marketplace. Nicely done.

SOE/what-ever has for some time been working on ways of nerfing the PL paths in EQ.

The fastest/easiest way to gain XP is mass killing of low level (but XP giving) mobs, historically. Hence the SK/Rang/Mage/Bez grouping and mass killing before the PL nerfs previously. The pre-CotF XP nerf was simply yet another PL nerf. And one in which MANY folks say "Eff it, tired of this" and quit over. Apparently the money loss has finally added up to someone getting the crowbar and trying to pry SOE/DB/Who-ever's head out of it's collective *****

While the text is somewhat confusing I do think you're misreading it. They're expressedly saying they've IMPROVED xp in older zones for level 101-105 players, which is headed in the direction of what you want. I say "headed in the direction" because it's unclear to me from the above, and also unclear to a lot of people posting on EQ forums, if they've TOTALLY reversed the nerf. Time will tell once the servers come back up.

What they haven't reversed is the XP nerf for killing mobs in an HA, which I agree is counter-productive. I know a lot of players who won't bother with HA's because they're unhappy with this feature.
