Luclin Concept Art

One of the fine artists, Ken Meyer Jr., at Sony Online Entertainment was kind enough to send over some of the concept art which was done for Shadows of Luclin. Ken has more of his work up on his own site, which can be found at www.kenmeyerjr.com. Anyhow, on with the art. The following picture certainly resembles at least one of the Luclin Creatures. ...And some more art, which according to Ken wasn't used in Luclin. It gives an interesting insight into the amount of work that's done for an expansion like this that never really sees the light of day.
The other sketches did not translate directly into Creatures in game, though you can certainly see the Look and Feel of Luclin within them.
Think a fuzzy whirling dervish on speed. I've got to say these would have been fun to meet on the barren moonscape of Luclin.

Ken's interested in feedback on the sketches, and will be monitoring this thread, so comment away! --Illia

i gotta admit i like the somewhat realistic guys ie Rokjaw, slicer, Thoom.. they look more like something that could actually exist and provide for itself.. tha furryball its kinda just way 2 fake looking for me.. i know its a game but there has to me some realism to the guys you are fighting or it can get lame imo.. unless you setup a whole zone of freak mobs with some ebil scientist as the boss then u can toss out some more freakish stuff like weapons grown out of arms and stuff like that..
Thanks for putting it up for us to see, appreciate the look =)

Okay, a couple of the critters don't turn my crank, they look a little too much like generic nasties I've seen before (the horned mammoth and the quadrahog - did I get that spelling right?). BUT several of them are great, and just imagining running into them was bad enough - I'd hate to really have to fight them. The furry ball and crested screamer scare the **** out of me!

And yeah, maybe the giant worm (burrower beast) has been done, but it's size alone and borrowing ability still make if a very worthwhile concept. The dripping alien-like mouth of teeth is a nice touch.

And the chipmunks of death (slicers) are too cool. Small and deadly - love it! Just hope I never run into them.

Man, now I'm gonna have nightmares. ^_~
Slicers

Hi Ken - Very interesting to see the creatures in progress. I paricularly like the idea of the slicers in as much as they would certainly pose a challenge to a party used to fighting one big thing - different tactics would have to be used to combat a swarm of smaller critters.

That, plus the fact that they look cute/harmless but are actually vicious, makes for a nice dynamic.

:envisions scampering slicers cavorting over the corpses of unsuspecting newbies...

;)

ken here again, thoom

funny, I like Thoom alot...maybe it looks quick just because it has recognizable animal parts in it or or something...thanks for the comments, tho!
ooo...Fury ball

Fantastic stuff...I particularly like the Fury ball and the stalker..althought I'd bet the fury ball got dumped for technical reasons....ooo the polygon count...I'd also really like to see more critters along this line...the whirling dervishes have to be my favorite creatures in the whole game...them and the giant cube blobs in qeynos sewers

Also the "crested screamer" looks promising...cept mabye too many head/mouth things...(was there any influence on sonic wolves from that guy?)

....and being brutally honest....the Throom...compared to your other stuff it looks like something you threw together during lunch to meet a deadline....*ow*

and the worms...first time I saw one 2 movies poped right into my mind...Dune....and Tremors....AYE AYE AYE....

oo..also I'd like to see something sorta in the realm of that Sabulba guy on starwars episode 1...waling on his hands....holding stuff with his feet...just completely abstract stuff...a killer chicken that still stuck in it's egg shell...just legs sticking out....but I think that's been done...mabye a deadly killer accountant?........a living bolt of lightening.....a magically animated length of rope.......

basically...more elementals...more whirling dervishes...HO AH!
ken here, thanks

methinks I like Thoom the best. Would give me good memories of fighting mammoths in Everfrost. Ahh....how I miss those days.....<sigh> the others all look really neat too, kinda with a technical twist...maybe someone should lock up those tinkering gnomes, it looks like some of their creations have escaped!
cool

hey, bumador, thanks for the comments...funny, it seems not everyone even here understands/agrees that there is a sketch stage that, hey, actually uses sketches! And, man, I would have loved to have these in game (check my site for the whole bunch at www.kenmeyerjr.com ).

Great Pics

Hey Ken,

These pics are great! I wish I was that talented =). Anyway, I think it would have been REALLY cool to see some of these creatures on the moon that didn't make it. I like your style too, not boring stuff like an ordinary frog or something, you've got a mix of stuff in there. I think the guy Draxo that posted with the topic stinks doesn't understand art and doesn't understand that it's a sketch and not what they would exactly look like in game. Well, anyway, I really like the pictures and also it's cool seeing one of the original mindcrawler guys I fought in Luclin! Thank you for sharing the pics Ken!

Thank you for the chance to see some of this !

Very interesting to see the work and input that goes on BEFORE all those modellers get to work :)

Should be getting my copy of SoL in about one hour (fingers crossed), so once todays patch is done (sigh) i look forward to meeting some of these in the 'flesh'.

Or there again, do i ? :)

Hey, Ken, nice. I'm reminded of Wayne Barlow but in no way is your work derivative of his.

Of the group above, the Thoom looks like it'd be the most fun to fight. The Slicer looks like it'd be the most deceptive (think rabbits in Stonebrunt).

Thanks for sharing this with Illia and the rest of us.
