Introducing Hero's Forge!

A new armor feature is set to launch in August. Here are the details from EverQuest Producer Thom "Phathom" Terrazas on EQLive:

Hello Norrath!

I am excited to announce the newest feature for EverQuest launching in August: Hero's Forge!

Hero's Forge is a new armor system that allows you to dramatically change the appearance of your armor. Working similarly to our augment system, which has also received upgrades, Hero's Forge is an add-on system that will be sold per character.

Once you purchase this new system for a character, you will be given one set of armor that you can use immediately. You will receive a Plate, Chain, Leather, or Cloth Armor Set, depending on your class preferred type. Any character that has the feature will also be able to obtain a selection of armor, including multiple color variations and different styles through all sorts of different activities within EverQuest.

We plan on continually adding new armor and color variations after this brand new system goes live. In addition to the armor found in game, we plan to offer additional sets, colors, and pieces through the Marketplace in the future, though the finest pieces will be available all over Norrath through normal game play.

We can't wait to see your reaction to this amazing new apparel available in EverQuest. Good Hunting!

Thom "Phathom" Terrazas, on behalf of the EverQuest Team

This is not what I wanted, if I understand it right. I wanted to be able to fit armour as decorations (in the same way you dye a slot, not the actual piece of armour) in place of armour I wear for stats, but dislike the look of.

Instead it seems we've got decorative augments completely separate from current armour looks. It's not hard to see why they did this rather than use existing armour as decorations - SoE wouldn't make cash of players then, or no more than a one time fee to have armour decorations.

SoE - why can't you do anything for the player that doesn't involve miking them of more cash, and in this case for a feature that doesn't even work how I'd like?

WoW - Just Great!!

I have been asking for this implement ever since the opion to change the look of weapons went active. This is a win - win situation. Not only does the end user receive more choices (popular if color's on current use equipment is any indicator) but the revenue generated by SOE will help to keep EverQuest alive and well into it's 14th Anniversary.

Thank you SOE for doing the work to help ensure both longevity and choice.

Yea it's pretty looking but....

The 1 thing that I don't like about most games these days is all the flash. Back in the days items that had particle effects were pretty much bad-*** items. So yea the armor looks pretty cool, but whats the point of having something looking cool if every lvl 20 toon looks exactly the same as that lvl 95 raid geared toon? I will take it a a step further. If a wizard casts a lvl 95 20k base dam huge *** fire DD spell, it's ok to make that look spectacular. I don't want every nuke looking like your about to crack the world open. EQ devs have lost this sense of scale. It doesn't effect me a whole lot any more because i tend to box extra toons, and keep my graphics toned down, and use old models to avoid lag, but sometimes I like to turn all the graphics on, and with everything turned up to max it frankly looks ridicules with all the effects from every proc, and every little spell looking like Gandolf fighting the Balrog. Less is more in this case imo.Save the laser show, and "epic" looking armor for the most powerful stuff. Then it has purpose.

Watch the webcast, that's exactly what they've done. The green set will drop off mobs 10+, the blue set from named in HoT+, and the red gear will drop off raid mobs level 80+.

Yeah, I guess for noobs that think people really pay attention to armor graphics will hop all over this upgrade, but personally I remain uninterested. Personally I don't care if I'm pink or green, or wearing chair or cloth, as long as the stats give me the best bonus for my selection. This reads to me as another ploy to suck back some of that lost revenue from your 2 and 3x SC mistake that let hundreds if not thousands get years for 40 bucks a pop. Ouch.

I totally agree with previous posts regarding their crashing issues. Zone to Valley from Argath, crash, come back, crash. No explanation, no fix.

Also, and I may be alone here.. How about doing something new with our OLD epic's, 1.0 to 2.0, like a decent increase in stats to make people want to wield them again. Something T4 HOT in stats and you MIGHT just see some people sporting them again. The 2.5 was a total failure in my opinion, and it's almost impossible to even do the event needed to get the items for it, for almost zero upgrade in stats. I see a HUGE advantage for new tasks here to keep people busy perhaps getting a 3.0 ? What do I know though, only played for 13 years.

OR, as previously stated, fix what's broken, quit adding new items that do nothing more then rack in more cash from unwary purchasers.

waster time

Well I would have rather you fix my charcter part of the eq page instead of add this crap.

Joking aside, this could turn into something good and fun. I'm not sold on it yet but with some tweeking and more information, I could see myself using this. Umm...assuming these samples are the worst of the collection and not the best because they're AWFUL.

An idea: Make this a quest (similar to the extra merc slot quest in PoK w/ ts). Make it last for months or whatever you need to do, but having a second option for enabling it could be good.

Also, now would be a GREAT time to steal a play from The Sims's playbook. 50% of what I do in that game is making new sims and customizing their clothes and building houses. You steal these concepts and I may never quest again. Or have money for food as I buy every single option from the marketplace while starving IRL.

Also notable is that all races will be getting all graphics for all 4 types in case they decided, for example, to make a halfling that wears silk in the future. Great news for enchanters/bards/rogues.

Positively hideous! I was immediately reminded of the suit of armor that was used by Henry the Eighth in his waning years!

According to the comments in the Podcast, artists took six months to come up with this and were actually PAID to do it! Mind-boggling!

The characters look as if they have been bundled into overstuffed snow suits! While the game is fantasy, picturing these rotund, overstuffed walking sofas in combat is stretching the imagination to the breaking point!. If one of those characters fell, it would be like a turtle turned on its back! Plus you have to PAY for the privilege to make a character look like a rotund individual in a Tron(tm) suit!

The only good things about this new "feature" are that 1: It's optional and 2: They did provide the option to turn it off !!!

HOpefully these samples are the worst of a large sample of..well, samples. The concept is nice. These examples suck, but it's best not to reject it outright for now.

Something like this has been sorely needed for YEARS. Once again, they are late...late...late.

I welcome this and will purchase the add-on.

For all the naysayers -- this is an OPTION. No one is forcing you to buy it. =)

..you will be purchasing it on a per CHARACTER basis. Which is your business, of course. If that's what you choose, I absolutely support your decision to do so on all your characters. But still....per character kind of sucks.
I'll keep my money thanks

And for a nominal 1000 station cash you can buy the patch to not crash when zoning into the valley or half the other VoA zones.

Sony needs to start fixing what is broken and not charging us for this extra fluffy crap that has zero impact on game play.

Let Us Dye The Armor +
# Aug 02 2012 at 8:30 PM Rating: Decent
I wish they would let us use the in-game dye for these armor ornamentations at least. I'm not fond of picking one select color. The concept of changing your armor visibly is a great idea though. I hope there are special ones for Gold Members.
Ahhh this is what you spent your time on?

With all that is broken or barely working in the game you design this crap.

It is bad enough that you dont make enough things for houses droppable in game, or add more art for platinum in the game (House full of swords). but this is just too much.

I came back to eq to get away from the Xbox and playstation model where they give you next to nothing for your money then expect you to buy half the content on the disk, now eq is the same. Maybe it is time to leave gaming all together.

I wont be buying this, and you guys should have put more time and effort into the armor designs to show this type of quality.

Here is to the beginning of the end.
Good idea, but...

They should have used these graphics for their original models. I'd pay to get rid of this crap and to look as my character looks now.

Only half serious.
Silk Class Armour

as long as they make leather an option for silk class I will be happy that was the best look ever available and hate that we are stuck in robes these days
still have my white dragon tunic cause i love the look and if we get to keep the stats of our current robe i will be all in

Very few I bet. Most people are too busy levelling up and trying to complete the same task for the 10th time while trying to find a group to do it with

i support the idea of individuality in games and eq has been a sore spot on that subject for far too long.

sounds like a step in a good directions. lets see how it plays out though with it sounding to be so strongly tied to the marketplace.
not sold (or bought) on the concept
# Aug 01 2012 at 11:54 AM Rating: Decent
I agree with Fonglo. This should be free to gold players. The new system, the ability to get and use the new 'drops', as well as the ability to custom make through TS new armor types. However, I can still see SoE having the ability to offer 'unique' armor sets and such through Marketplace for SC. As they currently do for multiple things.

A whole new system and it all is purchasable only? Bad move imho.

This should be free for gold memberships. That is the reason people pay for $15 a month. I could see charging F2P but as long as you have gold you should get this. In any case I will not be paying anything for this.
