SOE Currently Has 'No ETA' on Game Services

SOE downtime continues as they work to secure information.

UPDATE, May 4: SOE has answered some common questions about the attack.

As we previously reported, all Sony Online Entertainment services, games, forums and web sites went offline this morning as a result of the recent Playstation Network intrusion. SOE issued an announcement which revealed that personal information had been compromised.  Players were, for the most part, relieved that credit card information was safe, but wanted to know when they could play their games.  The press release only said, "Our teams are working around the clock on this, and services will be restored as soon as possible."

We shot off a quick e-mail to John "Smed" Smedley, president of Sony Online Entertainment, asking if the servers would be back up tonight, May 2.  He quickly replied with, "They won't be up tonight unfortunately."

SOE is granting customers 30 days of additional time on their subscriptions, in addition to compensating them one day for each day the system is down.

This is interesting. I can log in from that knowledge base as me and see all my old support tickets so the account name and password systems are still in place and running. You can also search the full knowledge base. Wonder if it is supposed to be up and working like this?

How does taking down the websites, as Sony claims they have done protect the information they have already admitted was stolen? That's like locking the barn after the horses ran away. What's the point?

That's why I am leaning toward the DOS attack shutting Sony down and Sony refusing to admit it.

I remember when you could trust what a corporation told you to be the straight scoop. But today it's just the opposite, you can depend on them giving you a line of BS. As I said in a previous post it's all about damage control and image for the stockholder. Actually addressing the problem and then fixing it are 3 and 4 on the to do list.

That's funny........... I don't ever remembering when you could trust anything a Corp. told you....lol. They have, and always will, only tell you what they want you to know. It's just unfortunate for SOE that they couldn't inform us all sooner of the severity of the intrusion (As they so delicately describe it). Not that anything of the nature is any better than the other... But it def. hurt SOE's rep. Not because it happened but rather they took so long in informing the public of the extent of it's betrayal. lol I've always wanted to use that word "Betrayal" in context.. Dang..... it just fits..........lol

Well.. Let's see... If you think about it. If you have someones account info like log in name and password then you could essentially buy things for other toons in the marketplace with the credit card info on file with SOE. Just because SOE says credit info was safe doesn't mean that you have to input your credit info every time you purchase something. Remember your credit card info is on file and if you want to purchase something they ask you what method of payment you would like to use that they have on file for you.

They are not trying to keep the information from getting out, they are trying to keep any further information, like say the financial information of those who did not get out, from getting out. Sony did the right thing. By shutting down everything it means that NOTHING is accessible.

Not true..... If the intrusion is from inside SOE then the info may still be accessible. And if it was an inside job then they already have all the cc data, And that would not only mean the basic info... That would mean complete credit card Data..........!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Yeah........ Everyone just call your credit card co. and cancel the card and tell them you want a new card with a new cc# just to be safe. That's what I did.

What I would like is to be reimbursed for the $19.95 a month I now have to spend on fraud protection.

It's mind-boggling to me that a huge company like Sony doesn't have the proper security in place. Last time I checked they were a technology company.

# May 03 2011 at 3:47 PM Rating: Decent
Why pay for fraud protection? Cancel your credit card and have the company send you a new card with a new CC #. There's your fraud protection....lol You'll have your new card in a week. It's not like they compromised everyone's SS#. Now when the laptop got stolen from someones house that had all military persons SS#'s dating back from Vietnam Era....... Now that was something to cry about. Anyone remember when that happened? That was only a few years ago.

You do not have to purchase things from a credit watching firm, and most of those can't even legally obtain the information that is needed to keep you safe, you are better off watching your own accounts. You know personal responsibility?

# May 03 2011 at 2:32 PM Rating: Decent
I certainly do know personal responsibility. The very first thing I do each morning when going on-line is to check every one of my bank, loan and credit card accounts. This is a process I do without fail, 365 days a year. That being said, I don't think any of us can be that naive to think that we're perfectly safe, when our information can be accessed the way it has.

Anon say they took the sites down with a DOS attack.
Who is lying?

Anon says they will keep the DOS going till their demands are met.
When will Sony meet those demands? Maybe Never.

Sony will not be able to open sites and games till Anon stops the DOS attack or gets caught.
When will Anon stop or get caught? Maybe Never

When will EQ2 and the other games be back online? Maybe Never.

LoL the "hackers" to do this are probably a team of the 205 developers that was terminated from SOE recently. If so Im glad they did it (as long as they didnt actually steal any information but was there to say haha $&#*#$@)

How hard would it be for SoE to link a web page to their Home web page and once every two hours but something different on it, even lie a little, But keep in contact with their so called "LOYAL" customers or do they really care???????????????????
Quote:"This information, which was discovered by engineers and security consultants reviewing SOE systems, showed that personal information from approximately 24.6 million SOE accounts may have been stolen, as well as certain information from an outdated database from 2007. The information from the outdated database that may have been stolen includes approximately 12,700 non-U.S. credit or debit card numbers and expiration dates (but not credit card security codes), and about 10,700 direct debit records of certain customers in Austria, Germany, Netherlands and Spain.

"But simple math $15 X 24,600,000 = $369,000,000 One they can afford to give us one month. Two they can afford to put up a temporary site with info regarding status on it.
Another point I wanted to say some are feeling sorry for SoE it is not their fault. Well it is. They are in the on-line business in the tune of $370 million dollars. And Hacking has been around since computers were created.I bet they have an IT team for security? Maybe they should of invested a little bit more. It is their fault. They need to change their company motto from "Que Sara, Sara" to “Our customers are #1”

First off, there is no such thing as a secure system. Any system can be breached no matter how many and types of security layers are on it. SOE may, or may not, share some of the fault. It depends on how open their system was/is to intrusion. The only people that know how open SOE's system was is SOE, itself, and those [explitive deleted] that breached it. Neither of who is likely to tell us.

What SOE can be faulted for is an almost paranoid reluctance to let its customers know what is happening. SOE keeps using the phrase "valued customer" but I am not certain they really know what that should mean. What we have been treated to so far is:

1. "We have shut down our servers due to a security breach."
2. A copy/pasted (slightly edited) PSN announcement from the legal department. Yes folks, that stuff on SOE's web page has been posted by Sony before on another of their sites (almost word for word).
3. One sentence that pretty much says, "We are too busy to talk to little people right now."

Data security is part of their (Sony's) budget and while there are no bullet proof security systems, there are adequate security systems out there or you would not have things like online banking.

I am not too quick to give them a free-pass on this one. It also looks like they might (eventually) have to answer to Congress for this too --> http://www.mobiledia.com/news/88922.html.

I think this falls under the category of negligence on their part, and like the Toyota fiasco, they will probably pay dearly for it. Bad couple years for Japan. /sigh.

Nobody said anything about a free pass.

As to whether Sony's data security was "adequate" or not, the only way anyone could know for sure is if they worked for Sony or were one of those that hacked them.

SOE will not answer detailed questions about that. For the simple reason that even if their systems were "adequate" it would only cause more problems with the public than solve.

The asswookies won't answer that because they would have to be too stupid to breach SOE's security in order to even consider it. In short, for them to answer would mean that they would have to give additional information about themselves and their methods to various police agencies who would dearly love to have a face to face with them.

We, the public, currently do not have the information to make a valid determination.

As for being INVITED to give testimony before Congress, so what. Many other entities have been invited to testify before Congress in the past and for various reasons ranging from idle curiosity to preparation for legal proceedings.

I am not giving SOE a free pass. I don't have enough hard facts to go on to do so. But having said that, I don't have enough hard facts to accuse them of anything, either. If you wish to start up the Salem Witch Trials again, go right ahead. Just don't expect me to join you at this time.

Hey man, no worries.
I hope that things go well for them as I love this game (EQ1) and hope to continue playing it again REAL SOON! LOL You make some good points about their network security and how it is currently "unknown" to the public.

It will be interesting to see if anything leaks out about their network security because I suspect that they are much more about profits given the highly competitive arena that they are in with the likes of Microsoft and Nintendo - not to mention the hundreds of other online games competing for a share of the market.

Nothing would please me more that to learn that they had a strong investment in their network security, but at this point I am somewhat pessimistic about it. Hopefully they will have enough sense to make the right investment in it going forward. If credit card fraud / identity theft starts popping up in connection with this, they are going to go from black eye to broken neck.

Also, for the record, Online banking has been hacked as well. There is NO system that is TOTALLY safeguarded from hackers. There have been many banks over the last 15 years that have reported security breaches into their systems and information lost to hackers. Even the federal government has not been exempt from this, so who's to say Sony is to blame? Sony may not have had top notch security, but would it have even mattered to the hackers? If it's possible to hack bank security, the Feds, or anyone else, and Sony pissed someone off, do you REALLY think ANY security would have prevented this? As the saying goes, "Where there's a will, there's a way."
As for the servers being down for an extended period, as long as they patch the problem so we're protected I'm all for it. Maybe they will final;ly be able to patch in some much needed fixes for the games as well. This may all work out to EVERYONES advantage.

Really?? But didn't you just say that nobody is "protected" (banks, Feds, etc)? It's all about how big is your pad-lock - i.e. how big of an investment was made in network security. In Sony's case they went with the 'Open Source' (free) Apache software and they didn't even bother to patch or firewall it.

Sure sony screwed up they know it they will pay for it. I for one hope they recover because I have been happy with their products in the past. They were one of the big companies and got arrogant thinking it couldn't happen to them and because of it they got screwed. Now they will be more careful in the future provided they survive this ordeal. Like I said though I hope they recover so I can return to the game as I have already paid for a year in advance. I am not extremely worried about my information because I already have credit protection but for all you out there who don't just be careful. This may be a matter of months for the shut down or a matter of days. I have been foruming and have even contacted sony and they are currently attempting to patch the breeches in thier security. I hope they also will keep some people on security systems full time from now on but whose to say.

The mighty have fallen and will be more wary for it in the future. All we can do right now is wait.

LOL. Some of you are so naive or so old and vaive. If you think this will be done in one week, then you are clueless about the situation. Evryone knows whose fault it is. Privacy law is specific and very serious. For anyone working in the ITS corprate world will tell you what we do every year regarding security and accountability and liability . For an analogy you can grasp, it is like having your security vault with $1 mil. in it and securing it with $3.99 lock. SOE had a responsibility and accountable by LAW. SOE will pay millions to its lawyers and settlement to blood sucking law firms. And guess who will pay for it? I guess you can't see that far or grasp of this impact it will eventually have on all of us subscribers. Or maybe you do and you are happily support SOE financially. SOE can really use you in near future. Too bad, they don't appreciate you or recognize you. Let me see their web sites. Same old stuff.
