Monday's POP God

Sony is sending us a new set of shots each day that depict one of the Planes of Power Gods. Each one has a clue, and they will send out the answers on Friday as to which one is which. Here are today's screenshots. The clue to this Goddess is "I haunt the innocent as they rest, who am I?"

    the name of God
    # Oct 16 2002 at 9:32 PM Rating: Decent
This is addressed to the person who mentioned that YHWH is supposed to mean Jehovah. It is actually spelled YHVH, the full name would be Yahweh, which is the hebrew word used in the old testament to refer to God. The Anglo Saxon translation which is used in modern day vernacular is Jehovah.

actually, it is an issue of transliteration preference. it can and has been transliterated as JHVH, JHWH, YHVH and YHWH. Since Hebrew does not have written vowels as we do in English, people who have adapted the word to be spoken in other languages have added the vowelling from the word adonai (Hebrew for 'my lord') to make it more pronouncable. DO a search on the term tetragrammaton on you favorite search engine to find out more.

Incidentally, I had a professor who thought that YHWH was adapted from the Aramaic "Ya hua" (Oh he/him).

    "god vs God" usage
    # Oct 15 2002 at 4:02 PM Rating: Default
My English skills may be a little rusty, but in response to Concordat and anon above, I believe grammar can settle the issue. The word "God" is used when typically refering to the Judeo-Christian version of "God". The terms "gods" and "goddesses" are used to refer to anything else other than the "God" stated above. Nuff' said.

    Radical Idea
    # Oct 15 2002 at 12:38 PM Rating: Good
    I have an idea.

I was looking at the screen shots of the Plane of Justice battle, and found myself kind of torqued off that someone was attacking MY DIETY. Funny that this didn't occur to me with Cazic Thule or Innoruk, no, it had to be MY religion.

I would like it so that when the Tribunal is attacked, a window pops up saying "The Tribunal is Summoning you to Defend them. Do you accept Yes/No". I click YES, and zone into the Plane of Justice, and I am suddenly in PvP mode with the attackers.

Think about it. The gods are just too weak. A bunch of mortals can trapse into their dimension (with dirty boots, no doubt) and KILL them. Usually in these kinds of mythologies, the gods' power grows or shrinks with the number and quality of worshippers. So, you go in to attack Solusek Ro, and suddenly wizards....LOTS of angry wizards start appearing and nuking you.
I also have a problem in particular with preist classes attacking their own diety, this came up in a discussion about one of Tunare's drops. A Tunarae worshipping druid couldn't wait to ice her for the item. Seems like there should be some massive karma problems there!

    EQ "gods"
    # Oct 15 2002 at 12:01 PM Rating: Default
Just a suggestion. When we refer to the various deities and ultra powerful creatures in Everquest, I think we should use the term "god" not "God". I know EQ is just a game, and I know it's all make believe. But there is only one "God", period. And that word should not be used lightly.

I'm not trying to force my beliefs on anyone. So please don't feel the need to flame. It's just the way I, and possibly other readers of this site feel.

    And the Nameless?
    # Oct 15 2002 at 4:54 PM Rating: Excellent
I wonder, if you are going to stick to Judeo-Christian usage, would the Nameless quaify as God?

Also, in some Jewish traditions, the name of God is never written or spoken completely, they take out the vowels. This is why all we know of the name of the Hebrew God is "YHWH", which for some reason is "Jehovah" in English usage. Today, some Jews still write it as G-d to show respect.

All that said, EQ is that last place to get your knickers in a twist over theoloy or semantics.

    RE: And the Nameless?
    # Oct 15 2002 at 8:43 PM Rating: Default
Yes. The Nameless is obviously meant to be Norath's equivalent of God or Allah. I think its neat the way they incorporated that concept into the games mythology.

As for your final comment, my knickers are not in a twist. I simply wanted to let Alakazam and other's know, that to many people, a phrase like "Monday's POP God" is as incorrect and inappropriate as "Monday's POP Allah" or "Tuesday's POP YHWH". Just a little exchange of cultural ideas.

    # Oct 15 2002 at 3:46 PM Rating: Excellent
This is not intended as a flame so please don't take it that way.

For the same reasons you state (beliefs) I use "God" to refer to more that one being. For me, there are many "Gods" and "Goddesses". You asked to not be flamed and state you are not trying to force your beliefs on others. I believe you. For me to read the words "there is only one "God", period." and not be bothered by it I must CHOOSE to not be offended. Ok, I can do that. But by the same token, you have the same choice and can CHOOSE to not be offended by reading the word "God" when it applies to a game rather than "god". I can respect your beliefs but I do have to admit to being bothered. You are asking others to do something you have not done yourself; "Do onto others" and such.

I give you credit for being an intelligent individual. So, hopefully this gives you something to think about.

    # Oct 15 2002 at 4:42 PM Rating: Default
Interesting. I certainly respect your right to believe in many "gods". But to say that you believe in many "Gods", indicates to me that may not understand the difference between those two words.

god - A being of supernatural powers or attributes, believed in and worshiped by a people.

God - A being conceived as the perfect, omnipotent, omniscient originator and ruler of the universe, the principal object of faith and worship in monotheistic religions.

In the english language, the word "God" is used as a name. Like "Allah" in Arabic.

So, people may freely chose to believe in "God", or believe in many "gods", or believe in neither. But by definition, you cannot believe in many "Gods".

You would probably feel uncomfortable, if they named a creature in Everquest the same name as one of the real world gods you believe in. Likewise, I am uncomfortable having the name "God" used when refering to them.

    # Oct 23 2002 at 3:33 PM Rating: Decent
The real problem with siting a dictionary definition is that the vast majority of them do not distinguish between capitalized and not capitalized words. Thus, it’s hard to tell when there is a difference. Also, the definition you gave ends with “in monotheistic religions”. Well, I don’t follow a monotheistic religion so how does that fit for mine? I do think I understand your point though: that the capitalized word is reserved for the HIGHEST position or a SPECIFIC position. That’s a valid point of view. I however see the word as a title rather than a name. You wouldn’t call someone “mister Smith” or “lord Erin” because that’s not proper. A proper title is capitalized as well as a proper name. As someone else pointed out, I view it a respect issue. I would be disrespecting my Deities if I didn’t use the proper title. Now, I DO also use the capitalized form when referring to the one you believe in because that is proper as well. This really isn’t about semantics though, it’s about perspective and what is important to each person. Obviously, you and I have some very different perspectives on religion :) I’m simple writing to communicate that there might be a perspective that you’ve not seen before. As someone who is not you, All I can do is show you something and let you form your own opinion. And, as someone who is not you, all I SHOULD do is show you something and let you form your own opinion.

As for the naming of Deity in game paralleling real life, well that would be in violation of their own naming standards. That would bother me because I don’t like to be told that rules apply differently to different people. It would also bother me if they got it wrong. However, after I realized that it was getting to me I would choose to not let it bother me any more because I know the difference and that would be the end of it. What someone else does is their own choice. Where does my freedom of belief end an another’s freedom begin? If that line gets pushed too far one way or the other, someone’s freedom is being pushed aside. The responsibility I have is to allow the other person a level of freedom that is equal to mine. (Again, this is all my beliefs so of COURSE I think I’m right :) but I understand it’s MY opinion and not nessessarily anyone elses.)

BTW, Thank you. It’s refreshing to disagree with someone on a subject such as this and NOT feel like it’s turning into an attack :)

    As to another:
    Quote:
My only other note is that most of the readers of your post have no idea what the difference is, nor do they care enough to learn.
Sadly, you are probably right. And referring to is as saddening is probably something that my counterpoint and I would agree on. :)

I do not get offended by religion unless it is foaming fanatacism that gives all religions a bad name. I am not offended either.

    Something to think about though;
using God or Goddess with the capital "G" can also imply respect to a deity or deities. In most polytheistic religions (where most of the time, no one specific deity gets more worship than another, at least not by the common poeple) if you are adressing or naming a deity, it is usually wise to do so with the utmost respect, wether or not you actually have faith in or worship them. Even the weakest of gods would have powers, and a mentality far beyond our own comprehension.

The English language really does not have a way to translate such respect, except perhaps by in this manner, becuase English is a christian influeced language. It only has influences from a polytheistic religon in the deepest roots of it's history(and only a part of that history at that)and holds to the idea the "thou shalt have no other gods before me." Adressing any lesser god as such would be a slight to the Almighty...IF that is your faith.

My only concern with them naming a real world god in a game is if they would manage to portray said being true to what it's nature is.

My only other note is that most of the readers of your post have no idea what the difference is, nor do they care enough to learn.

    # Oct 14 2002 at 11:32 PM Rating: Excellent
Terris-Thule is known as the Dream Scorcher or the Nightmare, for her effect on the sleep of dreamers. She rules the Demi-plane of Nightmares and delights in torturing the innocent as they rest. She is tall, well over six feet in height and skeletally thin. Her skin is pale with hints of gray. Long, black fingernails extend from her bony hands, to match her slinky gown. Her face is smooth - no features mar its sleek surface other than two empty black eye sockets. Long black hair flows back from two massive brass horns at her temples.
