Quests for The Devastation

Cage Kerafyrm (Incomplete): This group monster mission begins with Oathmir the Outcast at the zone-in of the Devastation.

You say, 'Hail, Oathmir the Outcast'

Oathmir the Outcast looks you up and down, taking in your weapons and instinctively gauging your ability. He replies in a somber tone. 'Hello. You are different than the rest of us here. You have not come here from the wall. You have somehow come straight from the world.' The outcast slowly shakes his head. 'You should leave this place before its nature becomes your own. I don't believe that you want to become part of the cycle here. Anger released upon others returns tenfold to the giver, they say. I have been in [the wall] and I will go there again, though each time it takes me longer to return, longer to fight my way back. I have been cast from the cycle. I no longer have enough rage in my heart. I [feel disconnected] from Her and without my rage and my desire I have nothing.'

You say, 'What is the wall?'

Oathmir the Outcast says 'The wall is, well, it is what it is. Those that die here or in the world with enough anger in their hearts, or those that kill with that anger, come here when they die. We are drawn here, to Her. The wall is where we go. There we fight with each other to be reborn, pushing our way forward to the boundary. [She] only calls those near the edge to do battle unless, of course, [her rage] is so great that she calls one of her most powerful servants from deep in the wall.'

You say, 'Who is she?'

Oathmir the Outcast says 'She? Well, you wouldn't know, you don't really belong here. She is Sullon Zek. She rules here. This is her plane. We call it the Devastation, though I suppose it might be more properly called the Plane of Rage. Each of us that belong here is drawn to her. We know that those that are worthy, with enough rage, will and strength, may become her servants and be summoned into the tower. Look out over the fields here and know that each of the creatures here serves Sullon Zek and they all fight to be by her side. Legends tell of those that have become Vessels of Rage, such as Belfon the Vile, and have entered the tower. We all wish that. Or, we all did wish that when we arrived. I have [seen things] that have changed me, and I no longer feel the rage as I should.'

You say, 'Seen things?'

Oathmir the Outcast says 'Yes. This place and everything and being in it are hers, given to her in their rage or by the power of her father, Rallos. It is all touched by her and her essence is everywhere. Sometimes in the wall it is possible to remember things that are important to her. There was a time when I was near to becoming the Vessel of Rage. As I battled for position at the front of the wall so that I might be allowed a chance to return to the battle, I found a small tooth. It was the tooth of a wolf. I stopped my struggles and examined the thing as well as I could. Suddenly I knew the nature of the tooth and how it came to be there. I also experienced a memory, one of [Her memories].'

You say, 'Her memories?'

Oathmir the Outcast says 'She remembers every great battle ever fought in the world or the planes, but she does not remember them as you might. She remembers the feelings of the battles more than the form. Those emotions become the memory of the battle and, for her, are the battle. I once experienced one of those memories, a gift from her, no doubt. What I saw and felt, it turned me from the path of rage and now I am lost here, useless to Her and too worthless for the combatants to destroy. I can't shake the feeling that she sent that memory to me for a purpose, but I can not decipher the reason why. Perhaps, if She so desires, I can show a memory to you as well. I am willing to reach out to her on your behalf, if you are [ready] for such an experience.'

You say, 'I'm ready'

A window pops up with two monster missions available, one of which is "Cage Kerafyrm".

You have been assigned the task 'Cage Kerafyrm'.
The direction to the entry to your instanced zone(s) have been marked on your compass.

Someone must play Lord Yelinak. Optional characters are Hsagra, Klandicar, Zlandicar, Sontalak and Lady Nevederia.

You are feeling the memories of an ancient war rolling inside your head. You must relive them to be free of them.

Push your way into the wall 0/1 (The Devastation)

The zone-in to the instance is located nearby. Your compass will point you out to it.

LOADING, PLEASE WAIT...
You have entered Eastern Wastes.

Speak with Grendor the Iceshaper 0/1 (Eastern Wastes)

Grendor is an ice dragon found at the zone-in of the instance. He cons KOS, but will not attack.

You say, 'Hail, Grendor the Iceshaper'

Grendor the Iceshaper says 'Ah, you have arrived! Just in time, I think. Those sent to collect Velium for our needs have not gathered enough. Our assaults on the various giants and Coldain have caused them to begin to retreat into the ground, as they tend to do. There may be a chance to gather enough if you can get to the giant fortress to the northwest before they get away with the last of their Velium. As you know, if we do not have enough Velium we will have difficulty defending this place from Kerafyrm's allies once we trap him here. If the task proves to be impossible, I have the power to return you to the place you came from. Just tell me if you want to [return home].'

Your task 'Cage Kerafyrm' has been updated.

Loot 4 Huge Blocks of Velium 0/4 (Eastern Wastes)

Loot 1 Gigantic Velium Crucible 0/1 (Eastern Wastes)

Grendor must have enough velium to begin his work. If this key element is missing there is no hope of defending the Tomb even if you do manage to trap Kerafyrm. They are evacuating their outposts in the wastes, including their store of velium. Get that velium and a large crucible to start the first batch.

Numerous giants can be found at the giant fort in the northern part of the zone.

Find someone to translate the patterns on the Bolvirk skin 0/1 ALL
Hand Scarred Bolvirk Skin to Grand Librarian Maelin

Grand Librarian Maelin says 'I've never seen anything like it before. The being that you took this skin from obviously belongs to a culture that uses scarring and tattooing to represent rank of some sort. Most likely a scar or tattoo is earned in battle or when coming of age. The more scars the more power the creature would have in their society. But there is another layer of meaning here. There is a section here that appears to be written in a form of the giant language, then disguised with a laughably simple code. It appears to be a fragment of some sort of legend. . . Here, let me write it down for you.'

He hands you the Scarred Bolvirk Skin and Bolvirk Lore Skin Translation.

Find someone to translate the patterns on the Undead skin. 0/1 ALL
Hand Mummified Pigmented Skin to Grand Librarian Maelin.

Grand Librarian Maelin says 'Well, this is strange. This flesh has obviously been preserved using necromancy. But the inking that has been done to it is relatively fresh, done after the preservation and after dead. This is hard for me to translate normally, but I have some special tricks for understanding magical writing. I'll write this down for you, but the general idea here is that it talks of a ritual of passage, something about becoming full. I guess I never really understood the undead, perhaps you can make sense of it.'

He hands you the Mummified Pigmented Skin and Undead Lore Skin Translation.

Find someone to translate the patterns on the Kobold fur. 0/1 ALL
Hand Patch of Dyed Kobold Fur to Grand Librarian Maelin.

Grand Librarian Maelin says 'What beautiful patterns! They look like decorations, at least at first glance. But I have a keen eye for art and an even keener one for patterns. There's a language in there, something like Kobold. It's sort of a pictorial description of, well, of a story about a powerful Kobold who became a god. It also talks about another god, a female. Here's a transcription, as best as I can make it. It's by no means complete, but with more information it might mean something.'

He hands you the Patch of Dyed Kobold Fur and Kobold Lore Skin Translation.

Find someone to translate the patterns on the Orc skin. 0/1 ALL
Hand Torn and Tattooed Orc Flesh to Grand Librarian Maelin.

Grand Librarian Maelin says 'I've always known that orcs liked to paint themselves at times of war, but I've never seen this. These markings are permanent and appear to be very, very old. I'm very familiar with orcish languages, but I've never seen this one. It appears to be a combination of several modern and ancient versions of orcish. The combination makes it very hard to read, but it seems as though it is a history of something called a vessel. I've written it down for you, but you'll need more information to make sense out of it.'

He hands you the Torn and Tattooed Orc Flesh and Orc Lore Skin Translation.

Find someone to translate the patterns on the Evil eye 0/1 ALL
Hand Inked Evil Eye Hide to Grand Librarian Maelin.

Grand Librarian Maelin says 'Well, this is very odd indeed. You say that this is the skin from an Evil Eye? I have never heard of those creatures cutting designs into themselves or each other, but that's exactly what this appears to be. Even more surprising is the fact that this appears to be more than just a result of combat, it seems to be a code of some sort. The eyes are rather bright, and this makes it easier for me to understand what this code means, there's a logic behind it. It seems to be a path or method to achieve power in a place it calls Rage. There are a lot of details missing, of course, but here is my translation of the information encoded onto this bit of skin.'

He hands you the Inked Evil Eye Hide and Evil Eye Lore Skin Translation.

Find someone to translate the patterns on the Wurine fur. 0/1 ALL
Hand Decorated Wurine Hide to Grand Librarian Maelin.

Grand Librarian Maelin says 'This is a fantastic pelt. It's scarred and bloody, sure, but look at it! Under the blood and fur there is a pattern scratched into the skin. It's not just an animal scratching at fleas, it's an actual language of sort. Very primitive and so very hard for me to understand, but I can make some sense of it. The text is by no means complete, but I see references to rage and anger and the perfecting of those emotions. Something about power and completeness being linked to such perfection. I guess it makes sense that a creature with such emotions would seek to the perfect form. Here, I've made some notes about what's written here. With enough information perhaps it will make some sense.'

He hands you the Decorated Wurine Hide and Wurine Lore Skin Translation.

Find someone to translate the patterns on the Drachnid carapace. 0/1 ALL
Hand Etched Drachnid Carapace to Grand Librarian Maelin.

Grand Librarian Maelin says 'Well, isn't this unpleasant! Spiders give me the creeps, you know. Huge sentient spiders. . . well it makes me dizzy to think of it! But I am a scholar and I must overcome this and examine this thing you brought me. Yes, there are definitely markings on this. It seems to be a version of Dark Speech and therefore easy enough to understand, but there is some form of code involved. I can only assume that this is to prevent it from being read easily. Why would someone do this? From what I can read of this, it seems to be the only way that this creature could retain memory of important information. It refers to itself as a Lore Warrior and implies that there are others, not all of the same species. Very interesting. Here, this is a copy of what I can read on this, um, skin. Perhaps with enough information a more complete picture will be visible.'

He hands you the Etched Drachnid Carapace and Drachnid Lore Skin Translation.

Find someone to translate the patterns on the Shiliskin skin. 0/1 ALL
Hand Tattooed Shiliskin Skin to Grand Librarian Maelin.

Grand Librarian Maelin says 'Well, this is not at all slimy as I would have expected! It's still a bit disgusting, though. I wonder what sort ink they used for these markings. It appears to be very long-lasting, and yet these markings have been retouched several times. I would think that markings this deep in the skin would last far longer than one lifetime. The language is incomprehensible to me, but I can understand the pictures easily enough. It seems to imply that this culture believes in a power beyond theirs and that there is a longing within them to serve that power. There is also an underlying tone that seems to suggest that they would destroy and replace that power once allowed into its service. Here, take these notes and this skin. It's a bit too creepy for me.'

He hands you the Tattooed Shiliskin Skin and Shiliskin Lore Skin Translation.

Find someone to translate the patterns on the berserker skin. 0/1 ALL
Hand Scarred and Tattooed Skin to Grand Librarian Maelin.

Grand Librarian Maelin says 'Hmm, I'm not sure that I want to be known for my interpretation of skin art as language, but I'll see if I can make sense of it. The pigment seems familiar, like something the Northmen use. And the patterns seem similar as well. From what I understand of the iconography of that culture, this seems to be a story about Sullon Zek. Well, a very small part of the story, anyway. Most of it is missing. I wonder if the rest of the body had the story, or if it was carried in many pieces by separate people who would come together to be one book, so to speak. Here is what I can understand of the tale. Perhaps you can find enough pages to get an understanding of the whole story.'

He hands you the Scarred and Tattooed Skin and Berserker Lore Skin Translation.

Keep the returned skins for later use.

Grand Librarian Maelin says 'I see that you have a large number of translations from those saga skins. If you can bind them together into a book using a book binding and bring it back to me, I might be able to show you how to perform the rite that is described. I'm not really sure why any sane person would choose to do so, but perhaps you do.'

Create a book using a book binding and all nine pages. 0/1 ALL
Combine the nine Lore Skin Translations in a book binding (a container sold at most home cities) to make:

Saga Skin Translations - vol. 1
Saga Skin Translations - vol. 2

You have fashioned the items together to create something new!
Your task 'Saga Skins' has been updated.
You have created a book that explains the strange phenomena of the so-called lore warriors in the Plane of Rage. Hold onto it and the skins you gathered, Maelin might have enough information to make use of your book. When you think you are ready for a challenge and you have gathered some friends together, give Maelin the book back and he will tell you where to start.

This ends the task. Despite the warning to gather some friends, it is safe to immediately hand these two Translations to Maelin to receive your class spell.

You have been assigned the task 'Preparing Your New Skin'.
Grand Librarian Maelin says 'Well, these are very interesting! I've learned a lot from the things you have brought me, so I wanted you to have this.'

Doing so will assign you the task "Preparing your New Skin", which has no time limit. It is the task after that ("Becoming the Vessel") where you will have a time limit and need to be ready with friends.

Class rewards:

Bard - Spell: Arcane Aria
Beastlord - Skill: Rake

Samples of Corruption (Normal): This task can only be obtained by someone who has completed the Razorthorn access task "Become the Vessel".

It begins with Oathmir the Outcast at the zone-in of The Devastation.

You say, 'Why do you feel disconnected?'

Oathmir the Outcast says 'I am lost, but I feel that I have a purpose here. It is difficult to explain to someone that has never been part of the cycle what it is like to be taken from it. I have lost all rage and have been left with emptiness. I no longer feel the desire to be with Her in the tower. I felt the rage leaving me slowly from the moment I was chosen as Vessel. She touched me then, instilling me with her rage, but it did not feel right to me. It was somehow tainted, impure. I could not accept it and the moment I rejected her rage all of my rage started to flow away from me. Something is very wrong with our goddess. Her rage is no longer pure, though it may be my own heart that is corrupt. Perhaps you [can find] out what has happened. Perhaps you can get into the tower and find out what has gone wrong.'

You say, 'I can find out.'

Oathmir the Outcast says 'Take this chest to store any clues you may find. Return to me should you [need another].'

You are handed a Runed Silver Box and offered the choice of doing the task on normal or hard setting. NOTE: Loot tables are reportedly shared between hard mode and normal mode.

You have been assigned the task 'Samples of Corruption'.

The corruption spreading through the tower has affected some of the residents more than others. I would have you collect the blood of the most corrupt residents in the tower. Once you have filled the box wirg samples, return them to me so I might study them.

Enter Razorthorn, Tower of Sullon Zek 0/1 (Sverag, Stronghold of Rage)

This is entered through a door in the center of Sverag, the Stronghold of Rage.

Loot 10 vials of corrupted blood 0/10 (Razorthorn, Tower of Sullon Zek)

These can drop off any mob in the zone. Note: Mobs hit for a max ~1,200 and respawn. Respawns don't drop the Vials. Only originally spawned mobs will drop the item.

Every so often, "a shadow of rage" spawns and attacks the group, charming a group member as it does so. The charm lasts 2.5 minutes (or will be broken sooner if the shadow dies beforehand).

Seal the blood vials samples in the chest 0/1 (ALL)

Combine the blood vials in the Runed Silver Box to craft a Sealed Runed Silver Box.

Return the sealed chest to Oathmir 0/1 (The Devastation)

Upon handing in the sealed box:

You have done well. It will take me some time to examine these, but I can only hope they will hold some answers for the dilemmas we face.

"a crumbling chest" spawns with one item of loot:

Blackened Fury Forged Pauldron
Pitted Blade of the Fallen Lord
Rage-Scarred Gorget

Also, there are random rare zonewide drops in this task:

Flawless Pearl of Tranquility
Glyphed Stone of Animosity
Runed Stone of Wrath

NOTE: Loot tables are reportedly shared between hard mode and normal mode.

Progression

At any time after the task is complete you are able to hand Oathmir the Silent Harmonic Chime that is obtained after completing the three Skylance Tasks.

Oathmir the Outcast takes the tiny charm in his huge hands. He spins it slightly as it dangles from his thick fingers, staring at it intently.

"Yes, I think I understand. This is tuned to a place, but that place is not as I expected, much like my experience with Her. I think I can change this, make it more receptive to unexpected versions of the original place."

He takes the pieces of the chime individually and rolls them between thumb and forefinger. Each time he does there is a loud and visible explosion and a creaking sound. These explosions are contained within the thick calluses of the giant's finger pads. Oathmir hums throughout, a deep sound like distant earthquakes. Once he has done this with each he hands the chime back to you.

"That might work for you, though I'm afraid I had to crush the magic that was there before to make the adjustment".

Oathmir gives you a Twisted Chime. Reward: Blackened Fury Forged Pauldron
Reward: Rage-Scarred Gorget
Reward: Pitted Blade of the Fallen Lord
Reward: Glyphed Stone of Animosity
Reward: Runed Stone of Wrath
Reward: Flawless Pearl of Tranquility
