Excellent Combine Server FAQ at EQPlayers

Check it out! Many of the questions asked in this thread are addressed. What zones will be rolled back, what will be available and how it will be unlocked, what game mechanics, etc.

http://eqforums.station.sony.com/eq/board/message?board.id=Progression&message.id=5480

I can't help but feel a little distressed though, since I have yet to find any info on whether the Combine server will be a "premium server", and cost more money. If anyone has the lowdown on that, please feel free to post it here, or point it out to me if I missed it somewhere obvious. =) Station membership rates are going up again in June, so I wouldn't be surprised if they insert a premium due to the overwhelming demand for the server.

That possibility kinda blows my enthusiasm for it. Also took a hit when I read that a single successfull group/raid will be responsible for unlocking the next progression step for the entire server. Blah. Oobahs rejoice. That also renders "* New players will be able to experience all of EverQuest's content and start on a level playing field with veteran players" somewhat dubious. And they're stressing this will not be a "classic" server.

Those aside, it still looks fun. =) Go read that FAQ thread. Yes, it's title is the "unofficial" FAQ, but EQPlayers has pretty much endorsed it (it's sticky).

Edit: ---> I asked about the more money, and the answer was "no" - "It is going to be a regular server, not premium." More enthusiasm restored. =)

I really do not understand all the ******** about 1 guild being able to advance the progression for everyone? Think about it people, how else would you really want to do it? If the progression is flagged the flagged players would find themselves in totally empty zones again. What fun!
progressive server
# May 17 2006 at 12:58 PM Rating: Decent
OK, i've read all the posts on allakhazams, and there's a heck of alot of people posting their approval and desire for a (classic) progressive server. It's been heralded on allakhazam's site for almost 2 weeks, but after searching other SOE and EQ sites, i see absolutely no postings or even a mention of a forth coming progressive server.
So is this another empty and false promise from SOE, or what. SOE is busy plugging Starwars Galaxies, and the new expansion of EQ2. They're also pounding the drums, and waving flags due to their partnership in the upcoming Vanguard game.
So what have they done for the veteran players that made EQ what it is today. We are the ones who bought ungodly numbers of expansions, and paid hundreds of dollars in monthly access fees, sometimes on multiple accounts as more that one family member got hooked on the game.
The veteran players have been more or less pushed out of the game due to indifference. The high end game is full of 2+ boxers and power guilds that do nothing but raid boss mobs. For the average player lvl 60 or higher, you must belong to a power guild, or forget finding a group. Criteria for joining a good guild(uber guild) is ridiculous. Most require level 70, you must have the right type of equipment and weapons, the right flags, and an ungodly amount of AA's. And you must show up for scheduled raids. WHERE's the fun in that? For most people it's not. If it isn't fun, why play, that's why the veteran players are indifferent, and rarely play anymore. Or worse, they moved over to WOW. I did, but i kept up with EQ and kept in contact with some RL friends that still played. Once the progressive server was promised i came back to EQ which is the game i really love to play.
So where's the progressive server, why is there no mention by SOE on the status of the progressive (classic) server(s).
I played Starwars Galaxy, EQ2, and i detested them both, matter of fact i bought the games and cancelled them both before my first billing. D&D was just as bad btw, did the same with it. WOW is passable, but there's no strategy needed, you can solo thru to lvl 60, just slash and hack your way thru mobs. Once you get to level 60, you can start a new character and class and do it again. BORING.
If SOE can't find a way to appease the veteran players and get new blood in the game with their EQ titanium package then i say let EQ die on the vine.

If you'd just gone to the official EQ forums, you'd have seen right in front of you a whole separate section called PROGRESSION SERVER DISCUSSION.

One Toon only would Rule
# May 16 2006 at 9:38 PM Rating: Decent
I think they should make it that you only get one toon on this server, otherwise all the people that don't cheat or box characters will still get left behind and outmatched by all the friggin' Cheaters and Boxers out there.
Old School EQ

I miss the glory days when you worked for your stuff and buffs where hard to get. I miss the fun and how to make friends instead of box toons and eqbay jerks. Will be awesome to relive the glory of EQ days once again and work for stuff. I rember haveing a warrior before kunark and getting my 1st piece of bronze armor and finally doing the lansaxe quest for the frist of many magic weapons. I hope they don't have pok or the bazaar maybe that will keep the bad players out and we can make alot better then the other servers. I will get a chance to finally go to all the fun zones and have people there that want to group unlike now where 90% of Antonica is a ghost town. Be nice for no Tutorial either and we can work together to kill mobs like the old days. Hope they have beastlords I love that class the most. But if not I can always be barbarian warrior again or maybe a dwarf pally. Thank you so much EQ for this. Best thing you did in years!

Good Idea but will be ruined in weeks
# May 14 2006 at 7:38 PM Rating: Decent
This progressive server sounds great. I hope, hope, hope, hope it turns out great and things are the way they used to be.
Except for several problems of which SOE won't fix due to greed. The will take the money from anyone who will subscribe....including multiple times. They dont care if people 8 box, 9 box. They have shown over the years they don't care if poeple KS or train. They don't care if people use all kinds of cheats and macros. They catch them and do nothng because the bottom line is they are paying and want them to keep paying and playing. Then you have the problem with 24/7 uber guilds(who have already made it known)that will come in-mass to this server and take control like they have done on the regular servers. Control the camps, zones and the economy.

Someone was talking about kunark being low level etc... Well when EQ started the max level was lvl 50 if I do remember and I there wont be any lvl 70s running around killing everything in sight. So yeah I think it's geared towards the old players (I started 1999 before kunark or any expansions) but im sure some of the new players will have fun with it as well. Because now they have a level playing field as well and can start as a lvl 1 player and progress as everyone else instead of starting a lvl 1 player and there being 5 to 10,000 lvl 70 players on the servers etc.
The only thing thats bad about this is that everyone knowing how the game works now .. you will see lvl 50 players within the first week of playing and that kinda sucks for the players that are casual players.
Unlocking the zones will most likely be ruined by people just trying to rush through playing the game and see who is the "GUILD" that can unlock them. It would be nice if people took it slow and let everyone enjoy themselfs on it but Im sure it will be a rush to get to the end expansion....

Best wishes!

so how will this look are all the old char models on npc be back, cause that is every bit a part of the nestalgia as anything else. i started palying when pop was released but only had the first 3 expansions hehe so i sorta know what it was like ...and god yes the guy who mentioned the boats there HAS to be boats lol i miss those days. but i will definatly give it a shot.
what about the boats?
# May 13 2006 at 8:18 AM Rating: Decent
Will the boats be restored? Or will this new progression server utilize the translocator gnomes?

I really miss the boats. I'd love to play old school everquest again, but it would really have to be old school. Yes, this means that druids can make plat again being taxi cabs. :)

One and only one question
# May 13 2006 at 6:51 AM Rating: Default
Will the original versions of each zone be returning. If not, ***** it...

Liveye (lvl 70 Wizard)

PS- "* A new server for past players to return to and re-experience a world where talented and skilled players reign supreme"

Is this ever a BS line or what. Of course the retro server is to attract old players. And the talented and skilled part only goes as far as it does on every other server.

A tempting prospect
# May 12 2006 at 7:06 PM Rating: Decent
I have to admit I feel the addiction calling me back.

I began playing EQ shortly before Veliuos launched and was immediately hooked. The game was brutally difficult at that time, with corpse runs from lvl 1, no maps, - save for what you could find at EQAtlas (remember those guys?)- experience came at a snails pace, no soulbinders, no Scions to port to Luclin (those sucked anyways) or PoK books to circumnavigate the world...and many other things that made the game a real challenge to play - add to that the fact that I started my EQ career on Rallos Zek.

Yet, with all that was so difficult with the original game, it was so much more enjoyable than the game was when I left. GoD was the last expansion I played and I don't think I explored more than a few zones in that one.

I currently am bored to tears with WoW and the chance to play EQ again as it was "back in the day" is very enticing.

Judging from the feedback on this thread, I think alot of people have been waiting for this to come about.

"Free" zones
# May 12 2006 at 4:00 PM Rating: Decent
I wonder how they will handle the "free" zones (that is, zones that were added not as part of any expansion, just added for "free.") Lets see, that would be The Hole(old version), the Warrrens, Stonebrunt Mtns, SFG, Veksar, and a couple others that I cant remember. None of these zones have ever been incorporated into the "Fabled" scenario for the anniversary celebraions because they have no place in the timeline. The Hole would have to be added before or along with Kunark in order to complete 1.0s. Will be interesting to see what "expansions" these zones get piggy-backed onto.
Also, I would like to see LoY and possibly LDoN moved up in the progression sequence to unlock before PoP, maybe even bfore Luclin. Makes sense to "fill out" Norrath before heading to the Moon or the Planes (old school planes excluded of course) LoY was a mostly wasted expansion because it's content was too low for the "uber" Planes guilds by the time it was released. LDoN is a little tougher to call, but I feel it makes sense to put it before PoP.

Anyways, this is what I'd like to see:
Original
Kunark (lvl cap to 55)
Velious
LoY
[LDoN] (maybe)
Luclin (lvl cap to 60)
PoP (lvl cap to 65)
GoD (lvl cap to 70)yes I know that 70 didnt come till OoW, but GoD was always geared to 70.
...the rest of the crap ...
Can't wait

Started when Kunark came out and by then, there were already psuedo-uber guilds around.....multiboxing was the exception and not the rule........still, that first year of EQ for me was......pure magic. And it's been downhill ever since......
I, for one, am really looking forward to the "glory days" when tradeskilling actually meant something.....although I'm guessing that since there won't be a *bazaar* for a while, EC tunnels will become SPAM/ LAG city once again....I don't mind, it was way cooler that way to hear peeps hawking their wares.....********* prices and making a deal RT as opposed to the apathetical AFK "mules" that line the walls of bazaar now.
I expect there will be a ton a people on the server just because, for all the new content, alot of players seem to miss the interactive cameraderie that used to exist in EQ.....see above posts for proof......
I'm NOT looking forward to the KSing in newbie zones and contested spawns ( I expect at least early on there will be a line to get into the TR in CB)and I'm sure someone will multibox themselves into a state and level of pure uberness and I'll navigate those instances the same way I did the first time, with patience and perseverence.....but I think this server may actually benefit the more casual player; someone who has limits to thier playing time......then again, maybe in 6 months it will be unpopulated.....I wonder how many folks remember how truly challenging this game was to get started in, basically naked with 5 food and water and having to CR after level 5.....I remember, and I can't wait to do it again.....
Something else to think about.....I'm sure others have......before KEI, before Temp, before any high end MGB....you actualy had to know how to conserve mana and learn quickly the value of a good bind point, not to mention faction.....the learning curve in the original EQ was harsh.....it's going to be a serious reality check for those folks that joined anytime after Luclin....
dayam, I'm getting all nostalgic thinking about the first time I ventured my druid into CB....I think I was trained there.....and met another, bigger, meaner train coming the other way.....let the bodies hit the floor.....
One last thing.....when MS server launched and it was strictly newbie for like the first 30 days or something like that.....the first day there were 30 peeps in GFay.....I'll never forget this, this was just about after KEI was making people in-game millionaires and Temp was "THE" tank buff of choice......of 30 peeps in zone......15 were enchanters, 14 were clerics and 1 (me) was a druid.....I remember thinking....cool beans, well, when we get completely wiped we'll be able to rezz the entire zone and have the mana to do it.....of course, we can take turns getting aggro and dying ALOT, but hey we'll all be rich selling crack and buffs to each other.......I'm really hoping people get into their character on this and develope them the way they did originally.....druids and clerics and rangers and shammy's and SK's and Pally's and warriors and necro's.....all bringing their unique blend of personal and class specific talents together to achieve great things.....
I can't wait.......
open the server
# May 11 2006 at 1:00 PM Rating: Decent
Judging from the forum postings, i'd say there are plenty of people waiting to log into the new progressive server. I'm ready now.
Let's just hope SOE does a decent job of it, and doesn't just throw something out there, and say that's it, take it or leave it.
SOE has lost thousands of players to other games, most of which are not as entertaining or as fun as EQ. I've played WOW and D&D for the last 6-8 months because the uber guilds and power players took over the game, and somehow the fun of playing EQ was gone. I did keep my premium allakazham account open, and kept up with the game, as well as keeping in contact with friends who still play the game. I was very pleased to hear that SOE was going to bring out a progressive server. So happy in fact i closed my D&D account, re-opened my EQ account, and will close my WOW account the day the progressive server launches. I will forgo playing my lvl 55-65 characters and start from scratch on the new server. I play for fun, and with no transfers, or twinks on the new server it will be a level playing field. I expect the progressive server to populate all the zones again with players, no more of the ghost zones we have right now.
Between the progressive server(s), and EQ titanium for $20, we can expect to see alot of new blood in the game as well as all the people that have been dieing to play and just have fun again.
well that's my 2cp on the matter, so lets get that server up and have some fun.

i cant wait. but i hear people saying that it will become like a old server soon.... i think not

Gearing guilds to take down naggy, vox, cazic, and innoruck (spelling) will be a difficult task... and u aint gonna see Kunark till this happens. so about 1-2 months id say.

Kunark was never that hard, but epics... well getting ur guild FULL epics could take a bit and then clear out veeshan im guessing is gonna be place needed for progression to Velious. expect 2-4 months again... even with hardcore players.

Velious was never that hard if ur guild knew what it was doing. clearing North temple of veeshen or sleepers tomb is gonna be ur way of progressing the server im guessing on this one and those are not that hard, if geared which could take a bit. 1-2 months maybe 3 to clear here for a hardcore guild.

ahh yes the shadows of luclin was next... good luck getting threw this expansion in 6 months... thats gonna be at the least.... Im just guessing but im betting Vexthal will unlock Planes of power. Vexthal takes ages to just unlock let alone gear for. the tactics wont be hard because people have done them and no how to do them, but getting every member of a raid all 15 peices for the vexthal key could take a LONG time....

well the other expansions will be just as hard like planes but im not gonna post about them...

even just to get Plane of Knowledge and Planes of power unlocked could very well take over a year. and expect Shadows of luclan and Planes of power to be the Longest.

I will be playing here and probally botting 3 chars. lol a bard, shaman and paladin. so hope to see lots of people there ;)

Even if it's 2 months to Kunark, that's too fast.

I'd rather see a minium of 1/2 the time between releases, which basically means at least 6 months before kunark can be opened.

They should require at least 25% of the server to meet some unknown requirement (in addition to killing nagie/vox).

I wish I hadn't tossed all my eqatlas maps. Hate reprinting them again.

well if it took 6 months to unlock kunark this server would loose players to fast due to bordom... yes i relize people are going here to play the game from the Early days.... but no one wants to play for 6 years to get a server like the ones today...

this server will have a huge boom in population at first, but if content dosnt come rolling out the servers pop will drop faster and faster and eventually become impossible to raid or get groups.

the expansions came out in good time for normal servers because guild were threw the content of the previous expansion so they released new ones to keep those players playing.

the faster expansions comes out wont affect you at all until planes of power, it will just add new weapons , items , spells, tradeskills, and places to hunt. if as many people play on this server as people are expecting, the original content is gonna get over run. crushbone, blackburrow, and najena will have like 100+ people in them.....

question
# May 10 2006 at 12:33 PM Rating: Decent
I love the idea of this server. Now it says to open up new expansions does that mean that whoever opens up Kunark first everyone then goes to Kunark or is it each character?

I hope they really do it the old way. I've been playing since 1999, when the tunnel was the bazaar, when you were a rogue and having ravenscale was umber!! And it cost 100pp and you never thought you could ever afford it!!!

I truly hope it will be like the old days!

It sounds great. Definatly a revitalization for all those disinterested vets. However, Fronglo hit it right on the head-as usual, the 24/7 gamers will turn it into a normal server.

Im bitter towards uber guilds, i'll openly admit it. Here are these people, who will be sitting with 50 of their friends, ready to log in the second it opens up, ready to blast through. They commit endless hours online, seeming to almost be online 24/7. This reminds me MUCH of an EQ event they had-I joined EQ2 with high hopes that it would be something like this new server- not spending hours upon hours LFG, or trying to get those awesome pieces of gear without having to find an uber guild. But the power players...got the cap, explored almost all of it, and sorta ruined the fun for many of us. It was a little less than 4 months if I remember. A real shame.

For the somewhat casual player (I play weekends only), that I wouldnt be surprised if Kunark was unlocked within a month or two after release. After farming Kunark gear (Um, hello Fungi, 1.0's, and class specific), Velious would be a breeze up until the high lvl dragon dungeons. Fronglo stated it plain and clear. I plan on checking it out....but unless they totally change some things (umm, for example, Phinny's spawn time? 12 hours, and being a 1.0 mob for roughly 5 epics, he's a huge bottleneck. /insert camp fights, and 4+ boxing. I came back to EQ1 right after DoD...and would you believe, that Phinny was STILL being camped? After like, 6 months, I just found someone to MQ it, because the camps were insane.

gdi, how did this get turned on? /rant off

However, Good Luck with those who DO try it. I wish you the best of luck! Tunare's early trademark trading area was Kelethin Bank-BRING IT BACK! Bring back the 40+ player Crushbone! The 80+ Gfay!

I have to agree with you Daedhel. I enjoyed the newness of no uber guilds and uber players on EQ2 for about 3 months, then it became the same old thing.

Good idea, doomed to fail, I think. Unless they code in a time frame to unlock, as another poster suggested, say 6 months between releases.

Give the casual players something to enjoy.

Great....finally SOE is doing something us old time players wanted, a server of our own to travel and explore without POK, POP, bazaar, guild halls, twinks, and twits. No uber power guilds, no 2 hour time frame to find a group. you can actually have fun again. I say bring back the boats, open up trading in the EC tunnel, just hand me my rusty sword and a shield and off we go. So you wait in a new zone for 3 RL days trying to get a bind, its all great fun, but a long run if you die. Gotta love "loading please wait".
I heard about this progressive server being launched, and this coming after SOE basically told us to take a hike when we asked for it before. I immediately came back to EQ, closed my D&D Stormreach account, and will close my WOW account the day the progressive server opens.
I played EQ for more than 6 years, thru 10 expansions, 2 accounts with multiple level 55-65 characters. I left EQ because it was a mess, hours to find a group, you couldn't get in a group without just the right gear, the right number of AA points, and the right flags. Mobs required 60 man raids to take down, and took hours to setup and complete, more if your raid got wiped. Thats not most peoples idea of fun.
So you peeps that like massive guild raids, the finest equipment you can buy in bazaar, stay on the regular EQ servers, those of us that play for fun will migrate to the progressive server and have fun again.

Actually repeat, no one is gonna hand you that rusty sword & shield. You will have to find that skelly with one and work against half a dozen other players eagerly want to kill him. Just like me....

I have been trying level 1 chars in different newbie zones just to remind me which zones have what (in current game terms of course), which class gets what at the start, how hard it is to level, etc. So that I know which of the 5 classes I am thinking about playing as a main will have to go through to level up.

I am also refreshing many links I used to maintain in my current links file so as to remind myself where to start, hunt, bind to, etc. What quests existed in original EQ that I can do when the server comes out so as to be able to make improvements.

This is the opportunity to use 'what I know now' to a small extent to help me then.

For example, when I was a newbie when luclin came out and feared getting ganged up by 2 rats in the Qeynos newbie yard, today I will grab 2 or more of them so as to hopefully get the skill ups on defense and not fear dying. That is one mark of an experienced player - losing the raw fear and paranoia of a level 1 rat and welcoming the chance to get ganged up on. Most experienced players no longer fear death, knowing that more XP is a kill or 5 away.

Now, the idea of a CR into Blackburrow without being able to run my 57 cleric there - that is daunting (*grins).

Ahhh - I am looking forward to this....

RE: progressive server
# May 10 2006 at 11:34 AM Rating: Decent
I think we can make the progressive servers work for all the people that actually want to play for fun, and actually put a block on the guilds that would wreak it for everyone else. Drop the tutorials, bring back the exp penalty and corpse runs below level 10. Make it hard to level like the origional EQ, make it take days/weeks to reach level 10 instead of hours.
With no transfers or twinks, and no POK, there will be no higher level buffing, and exp will have to be earned. I realize that the origional EQ is long gone, but SOE has to give people what they want, or die on the vine. If SOE does not accomodate their long term players, then i say let the game die.
SOE spent years dumbing down the game, actually making it easier for new players to level, while pumping out endless expansions to appeal to the power players and the uber guilds. They lost track of what their base players wanted, and companies like Blizzard reaped the rewards for SOE's short sightedness.
EQ is a much better game than WOW, only takes like 30 days to make level 60 in WOW, but it's basically a no brainer, just go solo and slash and hack your way to maximum level. There's no real strategy involved as there is in EQ. SOE needs to listen to the huge amount of people posting in favor of the progressive servers, and do the utmost to make it work.
As stated in a previous post, i cancelled my subsciption to D&D Stormreach immediately upon hearing that SOE was opening a progressive server, and i will also cancel WOW the day the progressive server is launched. My son will be joining me in this, between us we have 3 seperate EQ accounts, and have all but the last expanion on all the accounts. So, we have a vast amount of time and money invested in EQ, and would love to continue enjoying the EQ experience.

Well, I started in 2003, kinda late, yes, but I still consider that time "old-school EQ" and this server is starting from the release in 1999? I wouldn't mind playing this server. I think the older EQ was better than it is now (even though it's still tons of fun!!) because now, it's just power, money and uberness and not too many of the nice people are left!!! I didn't get to experience EQ before PoK and I think this will let me see what it was like for you veterans!!!!

*sniff* I...love...you *sniff*

1. Let's not rag on the dyslexic and the poor spellers. (Leave my grammar alone, its been a long day.)

2. New EQ server sounds cool.

3. If you don't like it or it doesn't interest you, don't frigging go there.

4. I like my toons on CT, and will not be playing on the new server. (But I do miss the boats.)

5. I would encourage the people who missed out on "the old days" (I'm only playing since 2001) to give the Combine server a shot. It took me six months to get my first character to level ten. All I did was run around, take boats, and run, run, run, run. Ah, the fond memories.

Good luck!!
