I just finished the trilogy last night, and overall I really enjoyed it. At the end of the first book, I wasn't overly impressed but that might have been because I saw the movie first. Who knows? The last couple chapters of the third book had me with tears streaming down my face, and I'm not normally one who cries because of a book or tv show/movie. I'll agree that Collins is not a fabulous writer, but overall I think the books were really good. I got to know the characters, identify with them, and generally like most of them and I thought the plot was interesting.
As far as the complaints about the clothing descriptions go, I don't quite follow. They didn't seem to drag on that much to me, and I'm not someone who particularly cares that much about fashion. I feel like she spent an appropriate time describing outfits when they were relevant, but she didn't get over the top. She certainly didn't drone on about the outfits for pages at a time. But to each their own.
