So the gist of it? They rewired the basic means e-coli get food. Instead of consuming sugars and releasing CO2 they reprogrammed them to do the opposite. Basically they added the genes for a CO2 fixation pathway and then stressed the bacteria. They left them in an environment rich in CO2 and poor in sugar until evolution pushed the little guys to begin using the CO2 fixation pathway for food instead, taking advantage of the more abundant food supply. They repeated this several times narrowing down what genes they needed to mutate for this to happen (turns out just one mutant gene was found in all 3 successful evolved strains).

Wild stuff.

That's kinda neato. The process and learning about how to change those sorts of attributes is the important bit IMO. If we just wanted the end result, we'd just go to Rodger the Shrubber, or something.

But how long until you get a squirrel to shoot lightning?

Asking for a friend.

Shoot lightning might take a bit, hard to invent stuff if nature hasn't done it first. Smiley: frown

Now if you wanted the squirrel version of the electric eel, you know a squirrel that delivers a paralyzing shock to anything that touches it, we might be able to talk prices. Smiley: wink

Well, my friend wouldn't expect death from above straight out of the gate, but at least a little second degree burn from above by the second or third zone on your epic quest is necessary.
