So it looks like Michigan finally passed the sales tax for online purchases. Today Amazon is charging me sales tax on check out.
I wonder if that means Steam is going to as well. So far they are not. I probably should read the details on what is or is not charged tax.

Chicago recently "reinterpreted" an existing tax law to add a use tax to streaming internet services (Netflix, Spotify, etc.). The outcry has been fairly muted so far, but it wouldn't surprise me if the move is challenged in court since it sets a pretty interesting precedent that could enable the Mayor to basically circumvent the state legislature and/or City Council.

Illinois charges sales tax for Steam via a circuitous route: You have to pay sales tax for internet purchases from any merchant with a physical store/business presence in the state. Steam started selling hardware through a sort of "mini-store" arrangement with Gamestop (vs Gamestop just selling Steam branded stuff) so Steam now has a physical presence in IL and I have to pay tax on my 19¢ future bundle trash.

Not sure about digital only stuff, but physical objects ordered online and shipped to California has been subject to sales tax for some time (either that, or sites charging sales tax have been ripping me off all this time).
