Mr. Trump was asked in the news conference whether he was urging Russia to hack Mrs. Clinton’s emails. “That’s up to the president,” he said, referring to Mr. Putin. He added he had no intention to give orders to the Russian leader. “I’m not going to tell Putin what to do,” Mr. Trump said. “Why should I tell Putin what to do?”

That's the point where someone who was actually just joking would have said "I was just joking" instead of some lame non-denial.

Everyone in the room knew he was joking around. Seriously. Watch the video of the conference.

Trump just punked Clinton (well, a whole bunch of people).

/shrug

The point is that so many other people do decide to fly the flag just because they feel like it and think it's something you should just do as Americans (and one would assume that used car lots wouldn't have flags flapping if they thought it would offend potential buyers, right?). But the Democrats don't think this way? That's... strange. It indicates a disconnect between that party and the people.

Is this a big enough disconnect to matter politically? Maybe not. But it's just another thing that you look at and go "hmmm....".

For everyone in the room knowing it was a big joke, you... don't get your news from anywhere, do you?

Not supporting at all. But pointing out that Clinton is handling him wrong. Dead wrong. He was baiting her, and she took the freaking bait. Of course he's going to keep handing her more rope if she's willing to wrap more and more of it around her neck. He's learning how to push her buttons. And frankly, it didn't take much.

I watched it. I also read the news articles it generated from everyone who was so supposedly sure that he was just joking.

But hey, super clever trap. Nothing like a days worth of stories about how you're encouraging foreign espionage, are deeply tied to Russian investment (despite your denials) and won't commit to assisting our Baltic NATO allies to show how you punked everyone. He tricked all those reporters into it with his obvious joke!

This speech makes me proud to have volunteered for Obama's campaign and attended his election night event when he won. I'm going to miss him.

The funny thing is he argues that DWS actions were horrible given what people suspected, yet he has no issue with Trump's actions given what people suspected of his role in the hack. Joking or not, those actions fuel the conspiracy.

It occurs to me that the last time we had a sitting president who could fully advocate for the nominee on the campaign trail was 1988 with Reagan passing the baton to Bush Sr. GW Bush was toxic in 2008 and McCain spent the race trying to distance himself. Gore wanted nothing to do with Clinton in 2000 (probably a mistake but history now). Having Obama able to put his weight into the race is a hell of an arrow in Clinton's quiver.

1. Flag draped, like, everywhere
2. Politician saying "I am your voice"
3. Politician saying "you need a strong leader, and I am that leader"
4. Politician pauses during speech so people can chant his name.
5. Single color palette of supporters skin color.
6. Politician claiming all the other parties are/were corrupt.
7. Politician claiming that if not for him the country will lie in ruins.

Does any of this seem eerily familiar to anyone who ever read a history book?

Media referring to Trump's claim that he was joking as "latest excuse for Russia hack request" -- Boy, Trump sure outwitted them there! He made the media report on this as though Trump asking for Russia to conduct espionage against the United States is the default and "just kidding!" is the excuse to try and backpedal from an obvious fumble. Great strategy!

It's a great running gag, since he's only been joking about praising and liking Putin since like 2008.

Curiously, last night beat the first night of the RNC for ratings. Maybe everyone was tuning in and hoping for a big blow-up.

Last night's numbers haven't been released yet but the first two nights of the DNC have beat the RNC's ratings by 21%. Trump is begging supporters to not watch tonight Smiley: laugh

I used to believe that also, but then I realized his tactic. When you trap him in a corner, he says something outrageous that is slightly related to the topic at hand to get you to respond to it and then he backs away from the previous point. He rinses and repeats to avoid ever having to actually address a point. If you stay on him and ignore his bait, he'll eventually just ignore it all together, only to use it as an outrageous segue in another discussion. That's all intentional. That's part of the reason why I use the "See post xx", to point that out.

I dunno, John Wilkes Booth gets a couple of sentences while Hitler gets like two whole chapters about him.

History books encourage mass killings! Smiley: tinfoilhat
