So next month we're taking a long weekend in Baltimore, with an eye towards possibly moving there in a year or so. My wife used to spend time down there; my sister lived in nearby Severn until recently. Looking for opinions and information on family-friendly activities and neighborhoods, within the public transit system.

Wait. You're moving to Baltimore. By choice?

Just kidding. Honestly don't know anything about the city, except that everyone I've ever known who has ever lived there, now lives somewhere else. But then again, you can say that about most places. Pretty much just bored posting at this point. Got nothin'.

Other than that I'm not too familiar with local family friendly activities, unless you want to take them to the The Block. Fun for the whole family. Smiley: tongue Sadly I would recommend taking the kids to the Smithsonian Zoo in D.C. over the Baltimore Zoo, at least until they are finished with renovations.

Just watch The Wire, that should give you and the kids lots of ideas.

I spent a couple days down there a few years ago. The aquarium is nice. I wouldn't go back to town just for the aquarium, but if you're going to be there anyway, it's worth visiting.

Hamsterdam meets all the above criteria.

I already said that.

Is the fourth season of The Wire worth watching? Three was still pretty good, but a definite drop off from two.

Yes.

The Wire is a five-act play. You can't judge it until you've seen the whole thing. Season 4 might be my favorite, hard to say.

Season 4 is way better than 5 or 2. My Wire Seasons Rankings:

Season 1
Season 4
Season 3
Season 5
Season 2

Granted, this is my opinion, but Season 2 has way less to do with the overall story than the rest of them. Season 5's take on the media was interesting, but not as interesting as wrapping up the main storylines before the finale.

I don't remember what season 4 is. Is it the mayor's race?

It might be. But the bigger story is that of the 4 kids that starts in episode 1 of season 4.

The Wire wasn't a show, it was a documentary.

It was both, actually. The Corner was the docudrama miniseries (also by David Simon) on which it was based, if you're interested.

And the granddaddy progenitor of that was a social anthro study called Tally's Corner, published in the 60s? I think?

I had type 3 paragraphs on neighborhoods in Baltimore and transportation and then accidentally deleted it. The better the neighborhoods the less public transportation, since rich people don't need it and don't want poor folks coming in and maybe stealing their good silver spoons. When my ex needed to take bus to Ft Meade, we used the MTA site to decided on where to move to and still not live in Greenmount East.

Paul would most likely be willing to give you a guided tour of the city. We live in Irvington, which is an okay neighborhood as long as you stay on the good side of the local drug dealers. If fact you can live just about anywhere in the country, I find as long as you don't **** off the local drug dealers.

You really should look into Roland Park if you want the best public school in the city for Thorn. It beats having to try to get him transferred to Roland Park Elem/Middle School. Barclay Elem was good when my kids went there, but I can't say how it is now. Johns Hopkins Grad students tend to live in the district, so it was nearly as good as Roland Park, when I sent my daughters there.

If I could afford to live anywhere in the City, it would be in Charles Village at 2819 Guilford Ave. That's my parents old house that they remodel to be my dream home. Sadly it's no longer for sale but the neighborhood is my favorite. Outside of the city I would love to live in Columbia Md again, but only public transportation to and from the city are commuter buses. Columbia is in Howard Co, with the best public schools in the state other then a few just outside of DC. There are plaaces in Baltimore Co outside the city with good public transportation and I would check into them, but be careful about the schools. I like Towson / Parkville area for the stores and mall and the school my grand kids went to in Parkville seem good.
