Is it necessary or justified?

Not to say that North Korea's internet outage was retaliation (but there's also nothing to say it wasn't), but if it was, would this sort of retaliation serve some sort of diplomatic or peace-building purpose?

I thought the president scolding Sony for pulling their movie was childish. I think it was a valid response, though not for the reasons they gave.

I think there is learning and evolving to be done on both sides. Is comedy at the expense of Kim Jon-un necessary to exert ones free artistic expression? Could we not have gotten the same joke if they 'd changed up the name a bit and set the scene in an imaginary country?

Sure, our country is really big on free speech, but is what we say, particularly about 'others' really ever 'free'. Isn't there a social cost to consider?

Bottom line, imo, even the most prominent, stately world leaders are not above childish tit-for-tats.

From what I gather any outage couldn't have affected much of the population anyway.

Yeah, it was nothing close to the scale of the attack on Sony.

I'd just rather our government didn't condone it.

It's saber rattling, no different from flying warplanes along the edge of their airspace, announcing joint war games with the South Korean navy or having a missile test. Something to let them know you CAN retaliate.

This is about that destined to be a box office flop Seth Rogen movie, right? I think Kim should have gotten a medal.

My exceptionally limited understanding of North Korean stuffs says that the only people effected by an internet outage would be those in some form of power. Those who oppress the populace. I say give the whole country free LTE (air balloons?) and drop free cell phones and solar chargers everywhere. Country will be freedomed in a couple of months.

If it wasn't for the crap missile tests, I wouldn't put "try to EMP their own country" past N.K.

I'm still not convinced NK was behind this to begin with.

I thought the president scolding Sony for pulling their movie

Do you really think there was any chance at all it wasn't a publicity stunt? For even a microsecond?

By Sony? I can't imagine them making as much money on this opening than they would have if they had shown the movie normally. Especially given the lack of screenings from the major chains.

Usually publicity stunts are done to make money, right?

I think the news I was listening to on my trip home said something like 300 theaters nation wide. I guess maybe those will get higher turnout, but that's still cutting out a large portion of the consumer base.

My theory is that the movie is so goddam stupid, making "Your Highness" look like King Lear, that this little stunt is the only way to drum up any interest at all.

Yeah, it's only indie theaters that are showing it. If it's a publicity stunt it's in really poor taste. Not that taste matters really.

I still don't think the prez should of been dissing, and then praising Sony for their decision making.

Maybe Barry has a cameo in the film.

Hahha. You think it won't end up in wide release in a few weeks? Really?

I often wonder how such simple obvious ploys at manipulation populations work. I really should know better by now.

I think most people will have forgotten about it in a few weeks. They'd have what... 1-2 weeks to play on the media hype until something else grabs their attention. Maybe Disney-Lucas releases a new episode VII trailer with Light Saber Ninja Shuriken. Unless someone bombs some Indie Theater I guess?

Maybe. Maybe the plan was to release it digitally on Christmas day to maximize the current publicity.

Nah, too cynnical.

Well, there is that option... still seems like the theater would have been a more profitable release venue.

I have 20 dollars on Xbox Live that is set to expire sometime soon. I guess I could watch it on Xbox Video.

There's pretty much zero chance this movie doesn't make more money than it would without the NK cyberattack angle.

What about the concessions? Smiley: smile

Edit:
If you liked movies like "Your Highness" you'll probably enjoy this movie. As I mentioned I had some cash on Xbox Live that was set to expire soon. So I rented it.

It's your patriotic duty to rent the movie now. Show NK who's boss by giving all your money to sony!

Yep, it's an interesting case, delaying the release allows them the time they need to pivot marketing to incorporate the viral exposure, and they can sell the decision (typically a hard sell) to shareholders as a public safety/shareholder value concern. Then, capitalize on that viral exposure by releasing digitally, and cut out various middlemen, the relative numbers look good, assuming digital rentals of an average of 1-4 persons. Google was smart enough to grab the free marketing for it's digital distribution platform too. It appears that this was thought out on Sony's part as a contingency solution a priori, but regardless, it fits in with their organic product integration strategy.

From what I can tell, they've got a few good tacticians.

Impossible to disprove, but Hollywood Stock Exchange had the film estimated for $57 million at the box office after four weeks and maybe $70 million total before it left theaters. So it would have to make both that by streaming it PLUS the people who would have seen it via "video on demand" anyway but who are now part of the first figure. Last night, nine of us saw it for less than the price of a single theater ticket. Granted we probably wouldn't have all bought tickets but I bet at least two of us would have (one couple). At least one other who would have rented it or saw it on demand (for a fee) who now won't.

The movie wasn't bad and didn't need some giant stunt to salvage it. If it comes out that I'm wrong I guess I'll say "Welp, I was wrong" but I don't see the benefit. Depends a lot on the reports from its take on Christmas Eve and Day since I'd guess most "Yay America" people will watch it then and not a week from now.
