I'm probably missing something.. but that article appears to say that this radicalized Muslim was found to be trying to join ISIS... and all they did was take away his passport? Then what?
I'm wondering if they is the result of the hyper PC culture of never wanted to dare to offend Muslims.. so therefore treated with kid gloves.
They also keep stressing over and over again this persons drug using past... as if the fundamentals of Islam isn't enough to turn someone to do this.. Like those teenage girls they recently found trying to go to Syria.
You cannot argue that these people are not following the example of their Prophet and are going against the teaching of the Koran.
I know that many Muslims are peaceful and desire peace.. genuinely.. but in truth those Muslims are like luke-warm Christians that think that gong to church and giving a few donations puts them in fellowship with God.. rather than actually do what Christ said.
The Koran is quite clear what the goal of Islam is.. and PEACE is only achieved by a global Caliphate and once all NON-Muslims are all made second class citizens (see Dhimmi and Jizya).
I have nothing against Muslims as human beings.. but the core fundamentals of Islam are the antithesis of civility. Peace is achieved through domination through any means (see Taqiyya).

ho hum... I guess I better get some help with this Islamophobia, aye?

And then what what? I don't even know if joining ISIS is a crime (I suppose it may be since I assume ISIS is classified as a terrorist organization). What are you suggesting they should have done?

I honestly have no idea. Perhaps there was nothing they could have done...

I once screamed in tears at a bunch of cops because a very disturbed friend of mind was walking down the street trying to throw herself into traffic... The cops got there and said they couldn't do anything unless she is proven to be a danger... all of this as she's walking on the shoulder of a busy road shouting at cars...
Apparently they could only wait for her to actually jump in front of a car before they could actually do anything... I had to be held back from attacking them in rage for doing NOTHING.

So.. perhaps there truly is nothing..

From what I can tell from quick googling, joining a terrorist group technically isn't a crime in the US, but supporting them in any way through services or finances is.

So technically, no, but in effect, yes? Because what would it even mean to join an organization if you never provided it any service or financial support?

Wow, it's almost like they can't violate the rights of someone mentally ill just because she's mentally ill.

Crazy stuff.

Kind of surprised Ugly hasn't been in this thread spouting off about how it was a huge overreaction on the part of the police for locking down the city like he did after the Boston Marathon bombings.

Did I say that? I don't remember saying that. could you link it so I can get some context?

Any new laws that come as a result of this would be a knee-jerk reaction and I suspect, some are coming. I know the military just told all personnel to not wear their uniforms off base. To which a fair number of them are upset about as they are proud to serve and proud to wear the uniform. Personally, I think changing what we do because of terrorists helps them win.

Cool, you guys are getting our oh-so-brilliant counter-terrorism training as well. Probably the same four hour computer course as well. Send my condolences.

They're going about it wrong. The answer is to make everyone wear military uniforms. That way the terrorists will be afraid to try anything.

That won't work unless everyone has guns. If everyone has guns, then *nobody* would try anything.

I haven't done a ton of research on this but I only saw the passport thing on the CNN site. Canadian news channels are much more down to earth, less panic and more substance. Just linked a US station because you guys own the planet or some such thing.

Canadian sites have already moved onto the positive aspects, cheering on those who helped, etc. No real talk of new laws, general consensus seems to be everyone did their jobs and the system worked. It is only day 2 though so who knows.

My friends in Ottawa say the city wasn't locked down at all, just the immediate area and parliament buildings. Increased security in Toronto at key government buildings but nothing significant, just a "we're not quite sure yet so lets keep our eyes open for a bit". Certainly no tanks rolling down the streets.

We don't really panic like you guys down south do. Nobody at work has even mentioned it, while we sympathize with the soldiers family and show support with half mast flags etc it's non-news to us for the most part. Just an idiot with a gun who is no longer a threat.

Someone that is clearly suicidal? Are you delusional? If someone is running into traffic clearly in an unstable state of mind (she was actually drugged out of her mind) playing in 40MPH traffic... That's a violation of Right?
People have the Right to commit suicide? Is that what you're saying?

on that note
How does this, in your mind, play into "violating" 2nd Amendment RIGHTS for people that are mentally ill?
I'm not claiming that mentally ill people should be allowed weapons... but based on what you said you would be against that notion?
