1. My need for a new topic, ANY new topic.

or...

2. The Tea Party's bid to take over the country.

Conservative PAC spends 100k on Cumberland County (Maine) Sheriff election.

In other backyard news, the mosquitoes are attempting a coup. They're worse than the black flys. I itch.

I'm packing both Deet and a natural bug repellant for the week. The natural one with citronella and lemon oil seems to work better then DEET at the campground I'll be vending at. I'm almost packed for the 5 days and nights there. Leaving tonight and staying in my daughter's trailer for the night, as I can't register until tomorrow, so won't have a bed in one of the cabins for the night.

This is the largest event I will have vend at and I'm lucky I can store my jewelry and cash at my daughter trailer home over night, as I been told that theft has been a problem in the past. I just need to get a golf cart to get everything to and from her trailer each day.

I'll have my laptop and smart phone with me, so I can handle inventory and credit cards, so won't be gone for the week completely.

Oh btw I now am able to call myself a Jeweler, even if IRS rules state I'm doing it just as a hobby. If I'm lucky I'll make enough too push myself into the tax payer business status this weekend.

You know what used to work as a bug repellent? Avon's Skin So Soft oil. I have no idea what was in that ****, but it kept the bugs away. Used it in Central America and only ever got one mosquito bite.

I think they actually make a bug repellent now, based on its effectiveness. Probably toxic waste and perfume, but there you go.

Anyone remember those coils that you'd burn for an area effect bug repellent?

They sold them at the drive-in theaters - you'd fog out your car. Wonder what the hell we were breathing??

Some of the natural repellents work pretty good against mosquitoes. If you want coverage for ticks too, DEET (at least 30%) is the only repellent that has shown any effectiveness.

Sounds like it would be best to use the DEET on my legs and the natural bug repellant on the rest of my body. I'm pack but for my sheets and towels for the weekend. I remember to bring one old towel don't mind getting dirty as there is one Sweat I want to do and it will get very muddy in the sweat lodge sitting on the dirt floor.

Jonwin will try to make it up one day at least, as he use to do massages there as a vendor. He took me for my first Pagan festival back the summer we first met.

I'm planning on jump him when I get back next Sunday.

Just use DEET. About as safe as water. Got some erroneous bad press from a scare 20 years ago, but there's no actual risk to using it.

The flies at camp seem to not be deterred by DEET, 2 years ago my next door tent neighbors were using DEET and getting bit, but the flies didn't bother me at all with the natural repellent. I'm going to be in a different location, so will go with with ever works best. Skin so Soft repellent doesn't work at all as far as I'm concern.

Fight the mosquitoes with a flame thrower, burn the **************

Also, since this thread isn't really about anything: the USA made it to the semi finals in the women's hockey world cup so that's pretty special. I think they'll have a hell of a time trying to beat Australia though.

The only team that should have a hard time defeating Australia is the Japanese womens team.

This is field hockey, it's ruled by the Netherlands, Australia and Argentine for the women. New Zealand, England, China, South Korea and Germany aren't too far behind and Japan are barely a speedbump for most teams at the world cup.

Speaking of world cups, we should get a football thread going sooner or later. Preferably before England and the US get knocked out in the group stage.

I don't see England or the US getting out of the group stage. I don't see the Netherlands getting anywhere either with basically only 3 properly good players left and a defense half made of kids in or barely out of their teens who I'm expecting to sh*t their pants when they face Spain.

The Netherlands might make it past group if they get lucky against chili but that likely pits them against Brazil so that'll be the end of the line then.

I'm hoping Belgium will be the surprise of the tournament or something but either Spain, Brazil or Germany will walk away with the trophy.

Instead of apologize you should start watching it, there's 20 girls in short skirts running around in every match in the women's tournament just in case you don't care about a fast paced, technical sport.

My daughter played Field Hockey all 4 years of HS - varsity Goalie. So she didn't have to wear uniform. All the girls of her team wore shorts under their skirts. One team they played though, all the girls wore thongs under the skirts.

I can't imagine trying to play a running game with underwear creeping up my butt.

I can't imagine any professional hockey player not wearing the shorts under the skirt (I think the shorts are part of the skirts anyway) as they dive frequently and whatnot.

Goalies don't have to wear the uniform but the goalie gear is a whole 'nother thing, basically the same as an ice hockey goalie but in way warmer weather.

I've been taking Prednisone for about 6 years now and haven't been bitten by a mosquito since I started on it.

So, I guess the moral of this story is "If you poison yourself, bugs stay away".

auto-correct FTW?

They get worse the further north you go, much worse. I seem to remember "I gave blood in Fort Simpson" (or insert the name of any other small town that far up north) t-shirts.

This year's winter was very long in west Michigan (there was still ice in the lakes last week if I remember right), but this week the mosquitoes are out in swarms. Even in the morning going out to my car for work, you get swarmed by them, and when you open and close the door to your car you get a few dozen inside with you.
