Two 12-year-old girls from Waukesha, Wis. were charged as adults Monday for the attempted first-degree intentional homicide of another 12-year-old. Police say the crime was inspired by the horror mythology of Slender Man, an urban legend that gained wings as an online meme.
The dangers of mindless repetition.

They stabbed her 19 times and she was still well enough to crawl and survive. Good thing they don't teach anatomy until high school.

They're bad Americans, stabbing people rather than shooting them. I hope you teach your kids better than that.

If you read the stories and have an overactive imagination, it can get to you. In most of the stories I've read, it's about the way many writers for that mythos use the unknown and atmosphere to allow you to build your own fears.

Creepypastas did lead to me having an epic dream involving being a space marine in powered armor fighting a nest of slendies in a cave once. That was kinda cool.

Wonderful?

God, or the lack there of, isn't what causes horrible things. Look at two 12 year olds attacking another 12 year old? That's the fall of society because of the removal of God. Look at the horrible things that have happened throughout history, even when God was more integrated? Well, ignore that...

I'm not ignoring that at all. But what are you referring to? Are you saying that an army slaughtering a city at the whim of some religious nut is comparable to when children do it for "no reason"?

I'm saying that people do **** for any reason they want, regardless of whether society is or is not accepting God. So this event is not evidence of what happens when people decide not to believe, or proof that it will get worse if more people decide to not believe.

A 20 year minister wrote a book called "Slenderman: From Fiction to Fact," so your theory doesn't necessarily mean these two particular girls would have behaved any differently.

You are right. People do things for any reason and I take back that these girls did this for No Reason. They basically created a de facto religion and became religious nuts... whether or not that was the Slenderman religion or even if they are lying and they really just simply did it for the simple purpose of wanting to kill.. then that desire became their "religion".
Everybody will find any reason to justify themselves. You are correct and there are plenty of reasons to choose from.

In the same light: People will always find something to worship as God and serve as God. In most cases it's themselves but people certainly can get creative (hence all of the religions). But in all cases it is wrong and destructive.

I'm surely going out on a limb... It may turn out that these girls went to church everyday of their lives.. but I doubt it. (and I'm certainly not saying that going to church means anything anyway)...

It's not just this. Do we not think that these types of senseless murders are increasing? Surely there have always been senseless murders.. but I don't believe that what we are seeing is a mere increase in reporting on it. The media have been vultures for 1000s of years..
