So, my New Year's resolution was to explore new stuff instead of falling back on the familiar. Problem is, I'm running out of new stuff.

I just finished reading Mason & Dixon, good yarn, took a while to get past the conceit of language.

I am always, always, always on the lookout for new music. Recommendations?

Playing any absorbing games lately? I care more about story lines than smooth controls, although I won't turn down smooth controls by any means.

Anyone take up any new hobbies or activities lately? Warm weather is here. I need a new pair of walkin' shoes.... hm. I have an elderly neighbor who has a dog. Maybe I'll offer to take him to the park in the afternoons.

I'm always looking for bad movies. Sometimes intentionally bad, but I prefer ones that are meant to be good and are genuinely bad. We're talking Troll 2 or MST3k type stuff.

Kill Switch is a pretty terrible movie. Here's a tip if you ever watch it, try to explain what the hell happened after the movie is over.

for things I like, I enjoy https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCSiPjfAJBgbFlIUsxOWpK0w and the artists solo stuff too.

For books, I'm going to try out neil gaiman on the advice of a friend. So you could try that too if you haven't yet. The little I've seen looks cool, I liked the Coraline movie.

Hmmm, I just occasionally try and grow something different. I got a hibiscus plant late last summer. It was a sad looking thing on sale at Home Depot. Hibiscus i read can't tolerate the winters, so I found a spot in the house that give about as much sunlight as I could get inside but didn't think it would thrive with the shortened day.

I moved it back outside last week. Yesterday it blossomed with 5 big red flowers. I should take a picture.

There's so much great new music these days, I can't keep up. Mostly I'll check out stuff my daughter links me that I find on NPR or stuff I hear here. This reminds me though, Connor Oberst (Bright Eyes) has a new album you can get a first listen in it's entirety HERE - probably only for a couple more days.

New food item....Sometime over the winter I bought chia seeds - not to plant but to use in parfait like things. I liked the parfaits (mostly greek yogurt and oats), but didn't like the chia seeds. Now I'm wondering if i can plant them, but they're probably sterile. They were expensive.

Oh here's a new one we discovered and have indulged in over the winter. There's just two of us now so when we make pancakes or waffles there are always lots of leftovers. I freeze them flat (in the case of waffles I'll quarter it as well) then stick them in freezer bags. You can pull them out individually and toast them. Home made Eggos basically.

Just finished watching Breaking Bad from start to finish. It was like a show on TV that felt more akin to reading a good book you just can't put down. I've never seen anything like it. It has this way of building up and building up until there's these moments where you almost jump out of your seat with your jaw on the floor. The people they cast for their roles could not have been more perfect. I think it's something like 62 one hour long episodes all on Netflix.

I've never seen Breaking Bad. I intend to and assume it would be worth it but the sheer idea of needing to catch up on 62 hours of television leaves me cold. Same with Game of Thrones.

It was probably in the games forum, that I posted earlier on Don't Starve. I was quite the addict for a few days. The fortunate thing is that when your guy finally dies (and it will die eventually!) your addiction dies with it.

An expansion just came out though - Reign of Giants. I might have to donate another weekend or two to the game.

Watch the first episode at least. After that, at least watch the first season. Then at least watch season two. Then at least all the things.

Edit:

It took us about two weeks to finish it all. I know some people who accidentally the whole thing over one weekend.

I've only read the first. My son loves them.

I've been reading the Chronicles of Amber after someone mentioned them in a book thread around here. The books weren't available in reader formats, so i downloaded one big pdf file of the whole series. It's 4 or 5 books I think. I'm on book 3 or 4.. I think. They've been pretty good. I'm kind of getting anxious to be done with the series but just because other books have piled up.

62 divided by 24 is 2.59 days. That's one hell of a weekend.

They accidentally broke time and space.

Wouldn't it be 62 divided by 48?

I've been playing Assassins Creed IV: Black Flag. You have lots of fun being a pirate and every now and then the game ****-punches you and says "Why don't you pretend to be an office worker instead with some guy yelling at you to play Frogger so you can hack files? Wouldn't that be a great break from sailing the Spanish Main and taking frigates?"

Playing Rift and Sims3, listening to 20-year-old music, went outside and flew a kite on Monday. New stuff is for kids and hippies.

Peg+Cat released their 2nd season though, so I've seen a good amount of that with the little ones. Cat is awesome.

FFXIV:ARR has a surprisingly intriguing storyline for an MMO. You can buy it on a Steam sale and get the thirty days free and do the bulk of the story without paying the continuing fee, all without being forced to interact with other players except via a duty matching service. Worth the fifteen bucks for the story alone.

As for walking, I picked up a phone app called 'Zombies, Run!' that is a cross between a radio drama and a video game, powered by you running with phone in hand/pocket. Each 30 minute walking/running session is a "mission" and you can do farming sessions in between missions to pick up loot. It's quite literally the first time I've ever looked forward to my next workout. I'm picking up some new running shoes and a phone-holdy armband this afternoon. (I tried my old iPod one, it's too small.)

Huh, same, though for a completely different reason - my sister lent it to me somewhat forcefully. I enjoyed it, though I wasn't too hot on the ending. It's very long, but if you like somewhat pulpy fantasy scheming with an interesting premise then you, meaning Samira, might want to check it out. Maybe not, though. Who can say for sure?

That sounds pretty cool.

Does the program slow down or speed up with your pace, or just runs or doesn't run depending on your movement?

If you stop and check it, it asks you if you want to pause. You don't collect items unless you're moving, so it kind of encourages you to at least slow walk when you're not in RUN FOR YOUR LIFE mode.

It also keeps those moments pretty sparse in the first couple of episodes, in case you aren't in good running form. I think the first mission only has you running seriously for 2-3 minutes every 5-10 minutes, ish. They also have a 5K training variation that is designed to gradually ramp you up for a race.

The voice acting in the radio broadcast portions is top notch, too. All UK voices if I'm picking up the accent right.

Here's the website: Zombies, Run!

Looks like my latest foray onto iTunes netted me The Both, which I quite like. But I'm pretty eclectic (which is my way of saying scatterbrained, I guess) - I like bits and pieces of a lot of different genres.

Zelazny? I read all of those when I was in high school, I think.

This is part of my problem, with fiction. When I find a writer I like, I devour everything I can find by them - which has resulted in some very embarrassing court orders; but never mind that.

You weren't the kid that ran away to live with Piers Anthony were you?

Yes, Roger Zelazny. With these darn pirated electronic documents the authors name doesn't show up much. Also I just saw on the Wiki that the Chronicles are a collection of 10 books not 5. I guess I'm on book 8.

Should probably factor in that each episode is not actually one hour long. They're really more about 45-49 minutes each. They'd be an hour long if they included commercials.

Any kid who ran away to live with Piers Anthony would be at risk, I think. That guy was seriously creepy, or at least a lot of his writing was disturbingly rapey.
