It's words on a page. If it gets to the point where it becomes annoying, walk away for a bit. Be careful, you may get what you wish for. Sub-D him and who is going to take the other side of the discussion? Then it just becomes a circle-jerk.

Perhaps I just grossly misunderstood the rules. Rating systems in my mind have always been to express agreement or disagreement with a perspective. I disagree with probably 95% of the posts in question and yes, many of them are extremely homophobic, xenophobic, or flat out misinformation that should not be read by anyone, ever. It's not a matter of disagreeing on points and counterpoints and having a meaningful discussion - those things happen all the time and aren't circle-jerks or rate wars. You can take an opposing view without distorting or flat-out making up 'facts' to support your case.

Like I said - I'm just shutting myself down on the gbaji front. It's not like he understood or even tried to empathize with a single thing I've said over the years anyway.

Hahaha this is funny.

As one of "the several" (edit: Probably, Ive rated down a lot of his posts so I just assume I am one of the few, but then again i don't go out of my way to do it so maybe im not.) who do vote down his comments on a regular basis, "working as intended".

It helps to lower your expectations while here or else you end up rating everything. For example if it isn't worth calling the cops over, it's not worth rating.

Besides rating people up or down is best saved for bouncing someone between something like scholar and sage where it's a lot more fun. Smiley: nod

I don't rate him down because I don't believe him. He's just keeping things lively. Oh sure, he's most likely conservative. But there's no way he can believe in half the things he claims to. Not even Rush believes all that crap, he's just paid to be a shock-jock of sorts. gbaji just likes to push buttons.

You know, I really, really hope that's the case - for his own sake. I can't imagine being that afraid and angry and miserable all the time.

I don't think that Rush is getting paid so much anymore. Many advertisers are pulling their ads from stations that carry him because of some of his more out-there comments.

Rush is getting paid just fine, don't worry.

I tend to assume that people are every bit as stupid as their comments illustrate. While it would be wonderful if all the troglodytes were just kidding, that's how you get unpleasantly surprised when you were expecting some secret best from someone and instead find out that they really are the person they "pretended" to be. A brief look at some of the people elected to Congress shows that people who think like Gbaji or Varus are in no short supply so it'd hardly be a unicorn sighting to have a couple hanging around here.

He's been boring lately. Far too much obsession with sports (so not better than sports talk) and pitching his books. If I have to spend another twenty minutes listening to some person call in obviously waiting for Rush to offer them a free signed copy, I'm going to have to try this NPR thing you're talking about.

Sup Thumb!

Instead of no rate, Kao, you should make everyone who has been camping financially pitch in for an edible arrangements and send it to gbaji. The card can say "sorry for karma raping you. We left no marks though...."

gbaji helps to keep things going. There is no way in hell he truly believes what he writes half the time.... 1/3 of the time? Bump him up.

Hold off on NPR til next week, it's Begging Week (TM) right now and they're even more annoying than Rush, as impossible as it sounds.

I switch to a CD in disgust and then grudgingly toss them ten bucks on the website.

Does a $10 pledge get you another CD?

Here's the thing about gbaji: He expresses many of the same feelings and ides that Varrus does; he just couches his words so as to not look as rabid.

I've (sadly) met plenty of people who are gbaji-clones when it comes to their belief system. I have zero problem believing he's that dumb/easily led.

DISCLAIMER: I have rated gbaji down when what I read is particularly obnoxious. I don't think I'm on Kao's hit list, though, as I'm not rating down everything and I even rate him up from time to time (usually not in =4, but in other forums).

That must be a local thing because my NPR affiliate isn't doing the fund drive till...sometime later. They mentioned it in passing this morning so it must be coming up.

I usually listen (except for Begging Week) but Alan Chartock can sometimes get just as annoying as his counterparts on the right.

It assuages guilt for stealing radio (as GTA III put it.) That's all.

One time we got a deal where, as a student, you could donate $25 and get bumped to the $125 tier which got you a really nice "GBP Supporter" card good for discounts at local restaurants and stuff. That was nice.

One of the gals who used to work here was an avid NPR listener, and pledge week always tested my sanity. I'll stick with the 4 minutes of ads 2-3x an hour thing the other stations do. Those are usually at least quasi-entertaining.

I pay my $5 a month to di.fm for commercial free music at home. If I could pay $60 a year to shut the ads on NPR up, I would.

I have always been under the impression that the rate system was to rate-down trolls, haters, psychos and spammers (and to engage in the occasional rate-war). While I disagree with much of gbaji says, his comments don't fall into any of the down-rate categories.

I don't have any problem responding to him without down-rating him.

gbaji is not unique in button-pushing. We're all guilty; which reminds me of a foray I took into the human psyche with an NPR-blog a couple weeks ago

The local NPR carrier here, MPBN, had been doing a 'Power Thursday' instead of pledge drive week for the last few years. It seems to be working. I've intermittently been a dues paying member over the years but I've given them money the last two years in a row on power Thursday. I appreciate the effort to shorten the begging period and would like it to continue.
