These two charts of overlapping political ideologies were kind of interesting.

The article attributes the polarization in The House to redistricting, yet the Senate has shown the same patterns of polarization.

Seems not very logical to blame this ideological centrifugal effect on redistricting. More than anything, I think it's the money from special interests groups that's causing it.

What we need is for Russia to get more powerful again. A nice big monster outside scaring us into some national unity and togetherness is just what this country needs. With the lack of any real threat to worry about we're free to bicker amongst ourselves with minimal consequences. Allowing Russia to take Crimea was a good start; maybe we can get them to fly some of their bombers over Alaska or something too if we ask nicely. We're just too diverse of a country to survive long without enough outside pressure.

I would think that something like Global Climate Change would be a common enemy that we could bring us all together. But noooo, we can't even decide on whether it's real or not, let alone what to do about it.

Sure, but what if it isn't real and we cleaned up and made the world better for no reason at all?

If I were to clean my house all up for company and then the company didn't show. I'd feel ripped off.

Then the terrorists would win.

Speaking of terrorists they suck as an enemy; knocked down a couple of buildings and that's about it. Not nearly scary enough. Smiley: disappointed

We'll, if you like central authoritarian states, that would be ideal, yes.

You can make some decent money planting trees in Brazil or Indonesia if you can convince people it makes a difference.

Ever watch the show Shark Tank? It's a spin off from a show in Canada, called Dragon's Den. A year or two ago, 2 of them invested in a company doing just that. The company went from $50k/year in sales to $1m last year. Some hippy couple out West near Calgary runs it.

Mr. Wonderful and Robert are on both shows.

Nope, but I've seen snippets of it or what not. Vague notion that people are begging for money and the weak ones are getting ripped to shreds.

No no no. Smiley: oyvey

You have to plant the trees somewhere tropical, using "fair trade" business practices while offering medical care to the poor people. Or at least do a better job at pretending you are.

Marketing! Smiley: schooled

I dunno... gf was watching Sharknado with the guy defeating tornado by blowing it up.. I am sure that if the content industry tried, it could convince an average American that Climate Change could simply be exploded.

Except, as was mentioned earlier, the second chart kinda steps on the premise of the first. I think it has a lot more to do with how our definition of "liberal" and "conservative" has changed over time, and how the parties are more aligned with our current definitions than they were 30 years ago. It's frankly not surprising given that today's conservatism is most associated with principles that only emerged as the winning Republican political platform with the election of Ronald Reagan in 1980. Recall that in the 1970s Reagan was not viewed as a good conservative, but today he's considered the standard of what conservative is.

I suspect that we could probably look any point in time and find that the ideological axis at that specific point in time wasn't as well aligned with the political parties of 30+ years earlier to that point in time. Politics does change.
