Though ignition remains the ultimate goal, the milestone of achieving fuel gains greater than 1 has been reached for the first time ever on any facility. In a paper published in the Feb. 12 online issue of the journal Nature, scientists at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) detail a series of experiments on the National Ignition Facility (NIF), which show an order of magnitude improvement in yield performance over past experiments.

"What's really exciting is that we are seeing a steadily increasing contribution to the yield coming from the boot-strapping process we call alpha-particle self-heating as we push the implosion a little harder each time," said lead author Omar Hurricane

So they got more out than they put into a fusion reaction. Yay for Science?

As an aside, we need to shoot more monkeys into orbit.

Didn't Omar Hurricane defeat the Iron Sheik at Wrestlemania '92?

I think Omar Hurricane was Anthony Weiner's craigslist alias.

Omar Hurricane is the pen name I use to write erotic Community fanfic.

This could be really, really, really, awesome. Or it could be useless. It depends on the gains they're able to make and what the scale limit is.

If it's in the realm of the former this could easily kill the current energy industry and also make previously impossible devices possible. Lots of clean(er) energy at relatively tiny fuel weight. Think cars that run 50 years with no refueling right out of the factory, and they could fly, using inefficient but convenient methods because the energy is nearly free..don't want flying cars because you don't want propellers spinning around near hydro poles? Stick a jet engine in there with a downward nozzle. You have the power and don't need a bunch of heavy fuel so most engineering restrictions are out the window.

Look for big oil to kill this, hard.

Big Oil has a bajillion dollars. If this has merit, they'd invest in it and cover with a trillion patents before killing it. Selling cheap energy devices probably has a better return than trying to pull diminishing quantities of liquid dead dinosaurs out of the ground.

The ****? Of course it doesn't. Selling any sort of energy generating device is a sucker's game, you want to sell the actual energy or the required fuel. No one makes money selling straight razors, razor blades, though.... For any sort of method that changes that fundamentally and makes energy cheap to succeed it has to be in the public domain. It wouldn't be.

My guess here was that the fuel came as part of the device based on the "car with 50 years energy straight from the factory" style comments. I never bothered reading the article though Smiley: thumbsup

Tony Stark was able to shrink the arc reactor while in a cave using nothing but barbed wire and duct tape. Someone get Stark on this!

You have to remember that when they speak about getting more energy out than they put in, that's not total energy expended, but just what they expended creating the reaction. There's a whole Law of physics that says you can't create energy. We're still talking about fusion, which requires fuel. In this case Deuterium. And while I'm sure Smash will insist that "it's easily harvested from seawater!", there's still an expense involved (and potential environmental impact). You have to process a monumental amount of seawater to get a usable amount of Deuterium, especially if we're talking about large scale energy applications. It's much easier to get than say Uranium, but it's not "free" by any stretch. And it's also absolutely a non renewable resource.

Also, this isn't exactly something that we can just build into a car and run it for 50 years at a time. Fusion reactions will presumably require significant amounts of energy to start up, require constant refueling, and will carry significant potential explosive capacity for some time. Strapping a "Mr. Fusion" onto a DeLorean isn't likely to be a practical application anytime soon. Replacing nuclear reactors with fusion reactors is, though. Which means less expensive electricity eventually. But no flying cars. Sorry.
