An enterprising craft brewer thought to deliver beer to the ice fishers out on the lakes of Minnesota....via drone. A trial run was successful, but before full implementation FAA caught wind of the scheme and halted it.

STORY

Ice fishing would have been a whole lot more tolerable with drones delivered goodies.

I'd just get fish delivered and skip the ice fishing all together.

Technically they may have been in the wrong. You can't use a drone for commercial purposes per the regulations, but radio control airplanes and blimps have long been used in advertising and promotions (such as the stadium blimp at indoor basketball venues or the ones that fly around car lots) and since he was not charging money for the service (which was an advertising gimick) or operating in autonomous mode with waypoints, he was not in violation of the UAS regulations. Someone really should sue over that one to get clarification, otherwise that will be used as a precident to shut down a lot of really promising technology, and more importantly, my toys.

I imagine the "clarification" wouldn't work out well for the plaintiff there.

Why, because he flew a piloted radio control aircraft in line of sight conditions under the 10,000 foot drone ceiling as a recreational activity and filmed it like the thousands of other R/C aircraft users of the world? The only difference from any other park flyer taking their toy out for a spin is that his was transporting a payload, which is not governed by FAA regulations anyways. Most glow engine radio control aircraft use an ethanol based fuel so you can't even make an argument against transporting alchohol unless it was across state lines.

If this guy was in the wrong, then the guy flying his little foam parkzone aircraft in the park is also in the wrong if he films it apperently. It's the same thing. Or me flying my helicopter fleet through the house.

Yeah, clarification by a court would only raise the level of precedent. What really needs to happen is a large corporation needs to get interested in something like this. I don't know, maybe an online retailer of sorts, who wants to decrease delivery time such that you can order online in the morning and have it delivered that afternoon.

Now, if that were to happen, then things would change quickly.

Also, being technically wrong is the worst kind of wrong.

It's really about the beer and snowmobiles. The fish are just a bonus.
