Or: Another horse meat scandal in France.

This time, horses used for testing by a pharmaceutical company were sold to abattoirs after the veterinary papers were falsified.
source.

I guess at least my sister will be happy that because of this fewer people will want to eat the horses she likes so much...

I don't see what the problem is. Make some horse stew to feed a family and fight rabies and snake poison. The ultimate in health food.

I think the problem was that it might give them some diseases rather than cure them. Or that there's still traces of antibiotics left that are bad for people.

Apparently, in the US the ban on Horse Slaughterhouses was lifted last year.

The Human Societies Horse Slaughter Petition Act says....
Quote:
Horses in America are not raised as food animals; they are companions and the very symbols of our freedom. When horse slaughter did exist in the United States, USDA documentation confirms that it was a bloody and terrifying process."

Is it less humane to kill and eat a companion animal than it is to kill and eat a traditional food stock animal that was raised for the purpose of slaughter?

I can see not wanting to eat your own companion animal, but I'd be ok cooking up and dining on a haunch of gbaji's mount.

I think only in the sense that food stock animals have generally been bred to produce more meat so fewer animals need to be killed to meet demand, but yeah, it's a pretty weak argument given the masses of creatures we wantonly slaughter because delicious.

Sure, now that it's off the endangered list.

I'm thinking an eagle-egg omelette will enhance my patriotism.

There's also the intelligence factor. We dislike eating animals that are cute/smart because we anthropomorphize them (dogs, cats, horses. Pigs are a big exception - their tastiness overrides their intelligence for me.)

I came to the conclusion a few months ago that I only eat ugly animals. Cows? Ugly. Pigs? Adults are ugly. Chickens? The ones bred for eating are ugly. Fish for eating are hella ugly.

On the other hand, deer are cute, so no veal. Sheep are cute, so no lamb or mutton. Horses are .... well, they can be beautiful. Wouldn't call them cute. So no eating horses.

Also, deer is venison. Cute baby cows make veal. Horses are majestic and used in certain types of ****. So are dogs. Really, we just shouldn't eat anything you can torrent a video of some woman fucking.

To be fair, men prefer sheep, so they probably shouldn't be eaten either. They can however, be shorn.

This weekend when it was dark and cold and snowy and my husband was out plowing, I was surfing the tv and found some goofy film that was collection of sex related movie shorts - directed by Woody Allen. One of them starred Gene Wilder - he fell madly in love with a sheep. It was weird, but I must admit - I laughed.

I don't think cows are ugly at all. They have the most beautiful eyes of any mammal.

Edit - maybe we simply convince ourselves that animals that taste good are ugly.

On the plus side, we're probably still good for eagles.

I think it's partially about size. We like to eat fat animals, makes for fewer animals to take care of, the fat ones just happen to be the ugly ones. Horses are generally lean animals, dogs are lean, pheasants are lean. Cows and chickens are not. So while we might eat a pheasant or horse now and then it's just more economical to eat a cow or chicken so that becomes the norm making everything else less...palatable because why would you eat a poor horse, they're for riding not eating aren't they?!?

This thread has gone horribly wrong.

The monkey doesn't seem to have much need for the frogs legs.

Was he the one with the beavers doing cute human like things with their paws, or the "Don't eat the tuna because dolphins get caught in the nets" one? Or both?

I went veggie for a while, but I had a rule that I needed to be a good guest and if a host served meat I would just eat it. I frequently hosted myself to a meal of steaks.

So basically that was a lie, I've never gone veggie. I have cooked for vegetarian friends though, I found the recipes I enjoyed most were Indian curries. They really don't need meat. I had more difficulty with other types of cuisine.

I had an amazing burger in Barcelona that was made with black beans and corn, although the best selling point was the delicious guacamole on the burger.

I was chasing a vegetarian girl for about two days and decided steak was the better choice. I've had good vegetarian and even vegan meals. It's always the people that give me trouble.
