Because it seems like we should have one, I don't know why.

I thought about making one but I didn't because I have nothing sensible to say about it. I think I'm not old enough for it to have much of an impact on me.

And it's not like this was unexpected, he's been on the brink of death so often in the past year I'm surprised he made it for this long.

Me too, part of me felt like there had been a million "Nelson Mandela is almost dead" articles in papers and online, for years, and most everything had been said in those. Now that he really is dead, well it's almost anti-climatic or something. Smiley: frown

I started seeing the news pop up all over facebook, remarkably not followed by a Snopes negation this time.

I also made the mistake of going to some right-wing sites and reading the comments.

My advice? ... just... don't. Smiley: frown

Filled with racism? Comments on any political site aren't much good at the best of tiles so I'm not sure what you expected.

Not a fan, really. I mean not happy he's dead, he's not Robert Jordan or anything, but really kind of a letdown in terms of actually governing S Africa.

He was no Mother Teresa. His lengthy incarceration is more likely to have been his claim to fame than anything. He did have his questionable moments as a pres, but what world leader doesn't. I think he was more pragmatic than Obama is.

Also, I thought he was a pretty handsome guy - you know before he was too old. There are lots of beautiful black lusty voices singing out about him all across the world today. That's a pretty cool send off.

Since Mandela lived to be really elderly his death hasn't come as a shock. I don't think I'm forever going to remember where I was when I heard about it. However, inasmuch as he was a rallying point for the anti-apartheid movement, his life had a lot of positive use. For some reason wonderful freedom fighters make for terrible peace-time government leaders, and compared to someone like Mgabe, Mandela was actually a shining light. The Truth and Reconciliation commission was really one of the better things that could have come out of such a hell-hole of a situation. It's sad S.A. is still a hell-hole for so many, but at least Apartheid has gone as a law.

It is what Nelson Mandela did after being released from prison when he became president of RSA that I admire him for the most...No bitterness, resentment and reverse discrimination, like Mugabe in Zimbabwe (who has become a power hungry tyrant).

That is why I respect Mandela. His successors (Mbeki and now Zuma) have allowed RSA's standards to slip and crime and corruption to rise...just like in Mugabe's Zimbabwe.

I'm honestly curious. Which right wing sites? What was said? Surely you can link to multiple mainstream "right-wing" sites and show us all how the comments there are just awful things we'd never read anywhere else, so as to justify specifically mentioning them.

Right. Good. Hitchens. You've read it probably. Why do I bother?

I went to the National Review, seemed a pretty generically mainstream conservative site. I'd say there about a dozen relatively popular sites that are "more" to the right.

http://www.nationalreview.com/corner/365631/nelson-mandela-rip-deroy-murdock#comments

Mandela turned Africa's only civilized nation into a police state and a dump, just as Mugabe destroyed a prosperous Rhodesia and converted it into to just another black hell hole. Martyr Looter King and now DictatorBoy Obama have America on death's door. What I would like to see is an African create something good instead of just destroying what humans have built.

8 days to put this old mutt in the ground? the gravedigger must be Stephen Hawking

Too bad the South Africans didn't stand this lout up against a wall and give him what he truly deserved 40 years ago.

That was within the first 15 or so out of 500 comments. There were other "Mandela was great" comments as well. The idea that there isn't hate and bile on every conservative site with unmoderated comments is idiotic, though. I imagine Mother Jones or Salon has some analog, although it's likely not as racist, what with the GOP being the party of white racists by a massively overwhelming margin.

Kinda the point. We're talking about comments. Which, not surprisingly, can be written by anyone. My question was why one would make a point about comments on a "right wing" source versus "left wing" (or whatever). It's a silly point to make, but it is interesting that it ties into an incredibly consistent narrative I've seen today. Do a google search on Nelson Mandela and about half of the results will be liberal sources talking about how bad conservatives are for <insert some negative thing about or regarding Madela here>.

It's like someone decided that this would be the narrative in the aftermath of the man's death. Not the things he did, but let's make hay about how racist/evil/bigoted conservatives are. It would be merely annoying if this wasn't such a consistent thing. So yeah, I think it's a pretty weak bit of following to try to make a point about this when there really isn't any point to make at all. It's use of cherry picked data to support a gross case of confirmation bias.

No, moron, the point was your disingenuous reply asking for a cite of something that no one else would bother questioning because they have higher functioning brains than amoebas. YOU are the one who questioned the idea that comments on conservative web sites were racist and idiotic. No one else gave a fuck. I happened to have NRO open coincidentally in another tab or there probably was no follow up.

That's not why other people do it, you see. Not to test if anyone is motivated enough to take 3 or 4 seconds to prove you wrong. Normally other people ask for cites because they think something is being made up, which is the obvious implication of your post.
