Hello all! I just picked up FFXI and will be starting it in about a week or so. I've picked it up 2 times before, but never had the time or money to really get into it. I was just wondering what kind of things should I know before playing? What's a good starting class? Am I going to be soloing all the way to cap, or will I be able to find players or a linkshell to group up with on occasion? I will be starting on Bahamut. Just any tips or info to pass on to a completely new player would be appreciated!

There are a lot of solo-friendly additions to the game since I last played which (for better or worse) make it so you don't need a party for quite some time. As a result you will be soloing and learning the ropes until lvl 15-30 depending on your luck finding a group.
I don't know how familiar you are with this game, but this was never ever ever the case a long time ago. If you didn't group you might as well not bother because the exp was so excrutiatingly slow. Eventually it will get to the point that soloing is simply impossible because you can't kill anything that awards exp (class dependent). I think eventually it will be a bit easier to find groups because there are only two ways to level at that point: exp leeching and grouping.
