Having played the Alpha, closed Beta, and now open Beta, ArcheAge seems like one of the few MMOs that won't drop off the face of the earth after the first month. It's popped up in the news feed and ZAM's done key giveaways so I know ZAM knows about it, yet there's no news about a support/database site for a game that goes live in less than two weeks. You guys plan on ignoring this one or what?

I've seen a lot of WoW clones come and go. After playing ArcheAge I can't help but feel very reminiscent of Final Fantasy XIV: Realm Reborn, which it borrows heavily from. Unfortunately it did not borrow any sense of style or atmosphere. The voiced story narratives could not be any more bland, and the music and sound effects are as flat and uninspired as they come, "uninspired" being the game's reoccurring theme throughout. The game is filled with exotic names for the sake of sounding exotic that don't seem to mean anything to anyone, and the four playable races are: Human, human, elf and cat person.

The entire time I was online, chat was flooded with players complaining about the game being "Pay 2 Win." The trailer was interesting, but I can't help but feel this game is just another hastily thrown together MMO churned out to appeal to those who aren't already invested into better games of the same genre.

I take it you missed the part about this being a Korean MMO that's being ported to the US? Or that it's a PvP sandbox with a heavy emphasis on crafting and trading? Maybe you're a fan of the past decade of WoW clones, which FFXIV:ARR was every bit of, in which case a sandbox isn't for you. But with 120 different class combinations and 17 different tradeskills, which are the source of top-tier gear, I have yet to see a game in recent history that was in need of a well designed database more than ArcheAge. Given that this seems to be a cross between EVE and Darkfall, no, there's nothing else on the market like it. But if there is and I somehow missed it, please, point it out.

As far as the P2W whining, the entire argument was based on false information and the whiners are the people who are upset about not being able to play every aspect of the game for free.

I saw the Trion logo and it peaked my interest, having played Rift a lot. The videos lowered my interest, because the game looks like it was created using a stripped down version of the same engine used for Rift. And now you're telling me it's an Asian production? If it's just as messed up as FFXIV, I'm not even going to bother.

I had a lot of fears going into FFXIV, and they were all realized. Worst MMO I've ever played, and I've played my share of crappy ones. The graphics were cool, but everything else alternated between half-baked and what-the-polar-opposite-of-heaven levels of weird.

**** you, filter.

If you like PvP and tradeskills, ArcheAge is it. If you want your hand held and a fully fleshed out storyline, this isn't it. The main story ends half way through leveling and the other quests are more there to teach you the game. This is a PvP sandbox (Trion is calling it a sand-park). Once you hit 30, almost every zone you move through is in a constant state of flux, moving from open world PvP to peace. Even your own faction can flip on you and attack you in these zones with the push of a button. If you want top end gear you craft it or buy it from a crafter. There are no raids and a limited number of dungeons.

VIX was crap, and Square should have been flogged for their **** **** (seriously?) poor attempt to fix it with XIV:ARR.

ArcheAge is free. There is not a single item in the cash shop that is required, aside from the auction house license if you want to buy and sell as a free player. If you want to get into the crafting game and own land and a house then you need to subscribe. You get a mount around 10 and a glider around 15, which takes an hour or two. If you want to own a ship you can purchase one with Gilda stars, which are earned by doing the main story quest and by running trade packs to the enemy faction island (Think Eastern Kingdoms and Kalimdor), which you can get to by ship (you have to make the trip, it's not a loading screen). Just watch out for pirates (Players that have left their own faction to become pirates), and opposing faction players, as they can board your ship and attack, use their cannons, or harpoon your ship and drag you around. Then there's the Kraken, which is like a world boss.

No? Is that supposed to mean anything? Did I miss it or did I not care? Because I don't care. The game has no immersion value. No presentation. It's like someone put it together with some kind of RPG Builder program on the internet using whatever default stock components were available. It might have been interesting twenty years ago. I realize this sounds harsh, especially given how hard you're white knighting it, but I wouldn't expect Zam or anything else to really notice this game.

Why, because it doesn't fit the decade old mold of the rehashed story-based roller coaster?

I'm not white knighting anything,

You are though. You're still doing it. You're acting like I'm comparing it to anything. It doesn't have to fit a mold or follow another game's example. It just has to not be ****.
