Skill Toy: KendamaFollow

#1 Oct 18 2014 at 7:40 PM Rating: Good
Maybe you know what it is, maybe you do not.
It is a skill toy, Japanese re-invent of the classic Cup and Ball.
Here is a video:

I started playing with one a few years ago, and now own 5. I have gave a few away.
There is a kickstarter (don't we all love KS?) going on, I'd like to see it meet it's goal (because I want what I backed :p).
I'm banking on someone else here knowing about the toy, or know someone who does, and can help spread the word for the kickstarter.

Cool beans?

Oh, no, I didn't catch the ball in the cup! Oh, wait a minute, it's okay because the ball is on a string and attached to the cup.

One of my nieces/nephews has one. I've played around with it. It's fun for a while, I guess. Nothing shocking. Kinda see it as an alternative to a yo-yo. Basic stuff is pretty simple, but you can do more complex tricks that are, well, more complex. I'm not sure why there would be a kickstarter for this though. What are they doing? As far as I know, the toy is already a production thing you can buy, and it's not like there's a massive number of new improvements you can make to it.

I think these guys have probably spent too much time playing with this toy.

I think these guys would be better off using Patreon or Subbable

Youtube yotricks, same group. Basically the money is to pay for videos to teach. There are tons of videos already, but I do like the group (I watch them for yoyo tricks).
The rewards are where it is at.

Aren't these all just copy cat sites of Kickstarter? I don't know who came 1st, but there seems to be many sites now that are "fund my project".
I know this group did another KS for a yoyo, that they were able to sell on their site to help with cost.

They are part of a traveling christian group that goes and puts on shows for kids.

I'd not seen them before - at least I've never noticed them before. They look like fun.

The kickstarter isn't anything I'd invest in. I don't think a 'video learning program' for a Kendama is a worthy or profitable business prospect. My work filter blocked their yoyo site??

They're based on the idea of crowdsourcing, so in that kickstarter really brought that to light they'd be based on that, but they have a very different focus.

Both the sites above are about ongoing projects and are aimed more at people producing continuous content, especially musicians, but easily expanded to other areas. The idea is that if I like an artist, I can subscribe to them on patreon and give them some small tip whenever they produce content. Kickstarter doesn't work for this at all, because it's all about large projects, but the idea here is to find a way of monetizing your ability to produce content so that you can continue to produce it.

Patreon you pay per released content, and subbable you pay per month for the content that is produced. They're really excellent ways of supporting new artists with a smaller fan base, or niche content.
